DH was pretty bad, though, in that autistic-guy role with Tom Cruise, who kept the movie afloat. The phrase "acting acting" comes to mind: he was to me completely unconvincing. But as Lenny Bruce . . . different story . . . Ratso (HIS signature role) not bad again . . . in that movie with Ben Stiller . . . anyone shoul;d be ashamed to ever share a screen with Ben Stiller

absolutely awesome character Hoffman did outstanding

I completely agree. He did an amazing job with this role. I've seen some of his other work such as Hook, Finding Neverland, and Perfume. This is a very different character for him and I think that he did great with this one.
