Mario del Monaco è stato un grande tenore quando affrontava altri ruoli, ma nella parte di Rodolfo è decisamente fuori posto. Nel suo canto non vi è nulla di poetico, di dolce, di delicato. Anzi, al contrario, si ha l'impressione che stia eseguendo un'aria di sdegno.

To all those who say Del Monaco had a brief career didn't even bother to check out his biography and more importantly, recorded history. This voice is a truly dramatic tenor with high notes too. A young Del Monaco had a good High C in his 30s and always had a very good B Natural. Not all dramatic tenors can say that.

Indeed, and this recording was done when Mario was still younger and more of a lyrico-spinto/spinto tenor, before he adopted the overlowering larynx technique from Arturo Melocchi. Of course the larynx should always be lowered in order to open the throat, but in this technique it was slightly exaggerated to produce a very dramatic tone, which led to del Monaco becoming a dramatic tenor, and also produced heavy spintos like Corelli.

Prime years rather brief? You're talking about the tenor that sang at 60 like there was no tomorrow, in a way most tenors can't begin to much in their prime, brief or extended!

I like him in more dramatic roles, Pavoratti not good as a dramatic (Otello) and Del Monaco great as Otello, heavier roles. His Otello, Aida are great. Pavoratti in Aida live, not very good but of course on recording that's another thing.
