I primordi Sull'area occupata dal Duomo e dalla sua piazza, dall'epoca romana fino a quella viscontea, erano sorte ed esistevano, tra i vari edifici sacri cristiani, queste più significative presenze: la basilica Vetus (III sec. d.C. ?), citata da S. Ambrogio, alla quale apparteneva la vasca battesimale di S. Stefano alla Fonti, ritrovata sotto la sacrestia settentrionale del Duomo; la prima cattedrale milanese, dedicata poi a S. Tecla, risalente al terzo-quarto decennio del sec. IV e chiamata basilica nova o major e poi divenuta la basilica aestiva; il battistero ottagonale di S. Giovanni alle Fonti, a ridosso dell'abside di S. Tecla, costruito da S. Ambrogio; la seconda cattedrale milanese, dedicata a S. Maria Maggiore, nella zona ora occupata dalla navata centrale del Duomo, consacrata nell'836, divenuta poi la basilica hjemalis. E' in questo suolo, da più di mille anni consacrato al culto cristiano, che dal 1386 il Duomo affonda le proprie radici storiche, spirituali e architettoniche. La nuova cattedrale venne avviata, per iniziativa dell'arcivescovo Antonio da Saluzzo e con il consenso del signore di Milano, Gian Galeazzo Visconti, secondo i criteri costruttivi del gotico padano in cotto, ma su un progetto planimetrico grandioso, quale è giunto a noi. A questa fase iniziale risalgono buona parte della sacrestia settentrionale, del muro semiottagonale dell'abside e dell'impianto murario della sacrestia meridionale. ----------- THE DUOMO OF MILAN Santa Maria Nascente This Church, dedicated to the nativity of Mary, is the Mother Church of the City, known as the Cathedral. This is where The Bishop carries out his duties of educating, guiding and presides over his diocese. It is commonly known as Duomo, from the Latin word "domus" , that is, House: the Duomo is in fact the House of God and his faithful. The area where the Duomo stands was originally the site of two basilicas: Santa Maria Maggiore, the winter cathedral, or Jemale, built during the Carolingian period, on the remains of the Basilica Vetus (III century?), and Santa Tecla (III-IV decade of the IV century), the summer cathedral. The baptistery of San Giovanni alle Fonti (IV century), situated between the two churches, completed this religious complex. Because of the precarious conditions of the two churches, especially Santa Maria Maggiore, the construction of the Duomo began in 1386 with Archbishop Antonio da Saluzzo as its patron.
