It usually hints at the smoke monster apparitions or the presence of the monster. I can't remember what episodes, but it has definitely occurred once or twice. I just thought it was very interesting how in this episode immediately after Emily's mother is about to light one up the nurse informs her that she can't and then who comes into frame? Alpert. I just can't help but feel this was important, and it seems to me that he is the most probable candidate for being directly connected with the monster somehow. His reaction to Locke's doodle was very insuring of this, to me anyway. Alpert's dark features i.e. his hair and eye color just seem to radiate smoke monster to me. " - thegr8tgraffin04 " When Ben was a little boy, his father brought him to the island. The first friend he ever met was a girl named Annie. She offered him the Appollo candy bar. Hugo making the same offer reminded Ben of when he was a little boy before he turned so dark. It was a touching scene. " - olnightstar86

You mention the fact that both locke and ben's mothers named Emily, but also you should mention they both weren't there when they grew up, and that there father ends up "ruining" their life.

Hey, picture this. Locke+Jacob/Island versus Christian+Claire. But Jack has to choose what side to be on.

Jacob was played by Rob Kyker and his voice was Carlton Cuse in the Man Behind the Curtain and theres been talk thats hes a character weve seen on the show but havnt heard, I dnt recall seeing him b4 and r they goin 2 mime him when we eventually do find out his appearance, thn in a later interview the writers sed theyve chosen an actor for Jacob and its som1 we havent met, this was after season 3 so is he goin 2 be a diferent actor? This is contridicting.How can we possibly guess who he is?

when eko (sorry if that's spelt wrong) gave it to him. each of these incidents was the focus of significant screentime for (what was at the time) little apparent reason. (the presence of the dust showed that the cabin had been there, but it was unnecessary for john to touch it; there was a random unexplained comment about the compass; and eko spent an interminable about of time to get to the mundane point with the book). sorry if this theory has already been covered/blown out of the water.

so, kid-john should have picked the vial of dirt/ash/dust, the compass, and the book of laws, because adult-john has physical contact with all these things. the vial contains some of the ash that surrounds jacob's cabin (which john rubbed between his fingers earlier in season 4); john has used a similar compass (i think when they were intending to rescue jack but instead ran into mikhail); and he handled the island/dharma copy of the book (that contained the missing sections from a dharma film)

what if the vial didn't contain dust form the cabin but sand from the beach??? Then it would be like he owned the island that's why he picked it first.
