Avro Lancaster

Video Title : Avro Lancaster
Description : For the last three years of the Second World War the Avro Lancaster was the major heavy bomber used by Bomber Command to take the war to the heart-land of Nazi Germany. It resulted from design work undertaken by Roy Chadwick and his Avro team to overcome the problems experienced with the twin-engined Manchester bomber. The prototype made its first flight in January 1941. With an impressive performance and excellent flying characteristics it soon established its superiority over other allied four-engined bombers operating in Europe. The industrial and military organisation needed to build and operate the Lancaster was huge. Six major companies built 7377 aircraft at ten factories on two continents; at the height of production over 1,100,000 men and women were employed working for over 920 companies. More service personnel were involved in flying and maintaining it than any other British aircraft in history. The Lancaster's operational career is littered with impressive statistics, some are set out below, but it is worth remembering that the average age of the seven-man crew was only 22 years. They endured danger and discomfort and many showed great courage in continuing to fly knowing the odds against survival were high. Bomber Command suffered the highest casualty rate of any branch of the British services in the Second World War. On average Lancasters completed twenty-one missions before being lost.

I would like to say to the chap that comented on the crew being young men aged 21, in regard to todays 21 yr old drunken chavs. The reason for there drugged up lifestlye is due to the fact that such heroism is not available today. In itself an adrenalin. War does have certain benefits, and it will always be glamorized. It was then and still is glorious. Blame the destuction of mankind. Chavs or not these planes were built to destroy life. So whos to say whats right or wrong.

is this filmed at hendon?

ungainly on the ground but graceful in the air. favorite ww2 plane. brave group flyng 60 ft off water at night to drop skip bombs on dam raids. more than half production run and crews were lost in combat. deepest respect and admiration for every one of them. thank you.

the first music, Name, please

absolute respect to the young men that flew them, 21 years old? un-believable, look at 21 year olds on the streets today, drunk n drugged up..

at the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them!!

The first Lancaster is KB889, a Canadian built Mk.X. One of only 420 Canadian made examples. Used to be here in Canada until sold to Charles Church and eventually to the IWM collection in Duxford. Nice to see her restored in her origianl wartime paint scheme.

Good question - Choloy War Cemetery is for specifically for Pilots who were shot down and then interred after the war. No idea why it should be in France and not Germany or England. Sorry for your loss too! it was a dreadful situation for all involved - especially the innocents from Germany later in the war. Your fathers Uncle must have been a very brave man. Respect!

thx...Im sorry If I was a bit overreacting...concerning my last two words...I did not mean to insult You... After some thinking I believe that its better to have them burried in France...we have still a few very stupid people here who are yelling the old nazi-parols...I think they would damage places like that in Choloy... Yes I think the place was choosen for a good reason... And Yes my family is very proud about that man...he lost his wife...and after that he fought against the nazi-regime

Hey Arnie, not a problem, after all it is a very sensitive subject for all. I have heard about the stupid prople in Germany we also have them here in England - desecrating graves etc, it makes you sick to the stomach and I agree it probably is best for them to be remembered in France. Lest we never forget!
