As an American, shouldn't you call the Minimi SAW? Anyway, you can't compare the M-249 to the MG-3. M-249 serves well as infantry support weapon, being a lot lighter, especially ammo (a LOT less weight per shot!), and the ammo supply also lasts longer (lower RoF). MG-3 is a heavy beast, that chews up the heavy 7.62mm ammo like nothing (lovely!) - two very different MGs that serve different roles. But US has the M240 (FN MAG) a workhorse of a gun that should fill the niche of the MG 3 just fine!
