TURTLE TRAX: www.turtles.org
Hawaiian green turtles or honu are nature's work of art. In this video you will see what has now become routine in Hawaii. Lots of sea turtles --small and big. Meeting green sea turtles --or their smaller cousins, the 'ea or hawksbills are excellent reasons to visit Hawaii. (If you need a reason, that is) |

A male Hawaiian sea turtle (known since 1998) has a word with another male who we've known since 2000.
The honu bystander in the foreground is another turtle that we've known since 2000.
This footage was shot in July 2007. |

Hawaiian green turtles, or honu in Hawaiian, love scratching themselves on coral and rock overhangs. Watch Wana, a honu whose name means "ray of light," as she satisfies an itch.
We first sighted Wana on July 26, 2000. This scratching sequence was videotaped on July 19, 2007. We have known Wana for eight summers now.

Wai? is Hawaiian for "Who?". Wai/'s name is written complete with a question mark. That's because Wai? is a bundle of puzzles. Wai? is a cross --a hybrid between a Hawaiian green turtle and a hawksbill. Wai? is the only hawksbill/honu cross ever documented in the Hawaiian Islands.
We first sighted Wai? in 2004. Unfortunately, this summer Wai? has developed a fibropapilloma tumour in the right eye. You can see a small white lump in the posterior corner of the eye when you watch this video.
To read more about Wai? please see reports of our first summer's sighting in 2004 at:

This video shows one of the earliest sightings of Howzit, a juvenile Hawaiian Green Turtle we first met back in 1992.
We didn't know back then that she'd already shown the first signs of a tumour disease called Fibropapilloma.
By 1995, the disease had progressed to such an extent that Howzit grew weak and emaciated. 1995 was the last summer that we saw this beloved honu. |

TURTLE TRAX (turtles.org) and MISSISSAUGAWATCH (mississaugawatch.ca) have been testing alternate means of transportation while on Maui. (Admittedly it never occurred to us to try walking...)
We live in Mississauga --the self-proclaimed "Best city in Cana..." make that "Greatest City in the World".
We decided to check out MAUI TRANSIT to compare with our own "Greatest City in the World" MISSISSAUGA TRANSIT.
We like MISSISSAUGA TRANSIT but overall we give MAUI TRANSIT a higher rating. After all, you can't beat where they decided to put their bus stops! Especially in February.
Maui buses certainly encourage and assist bicyclists what with the bike racks at the front of all Maui buses.
GREAT IDEA.
This video shows the Kihei Islander in action and then a much smaller bus that does the Napili to Kaanapali run.

TURTLE TRAX -- www.turtles.org
This video footage shows the first year we sighted Aikane back in 1990 at the Honokowai Turtle House. "Aikane" is Hawaiian and among other things it means "friendly".
Aikane remained part of the Honokowai Ohana straight through 1996. Even now, 2007, we still can't agree on Aikane's sex. Ursula believes the honu was a male. Peter, on the other hand, holds to the turtle being a female.
There are still turtles from The Old Days (1990, 1991 and 1992) who are still around as of Summer 2007. Among them are Nui, Tiamat, Raphael and of course, Zeus. |

When you're a Hawaiian sea turtle it's all about LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION. And the most desired LOCATION is almost always where some other sea turtle is resting. Here a honu (Hawaiian for "sea turtle") drops down a gentle head butt to move a fellow to a more desirable LOCATION (at least for him). |

This video shows the progression of fibropapilloma disease in a young male Hawaiian green sea turtle named "Nui" (Hawaiian for "big"). We first met Nui in 1990 when he showed just the slightest signs of the tumor disease. Fibropapilloma progressed through 1992.
By 1993, it had stabilized and by 1994 we were confident enough to record Nui as a regression case. Nui is still around Honokowai, West Maui. We last saw him in Summer 2006. Nui's doing just fine. |

Hawaiian green turtle (honu) leaves her preferred resting spot and goes up for air. Upon returning she sees that another turtle has grabbed her place. That won't do. So she sneaks up on the squatter from behind, lands atop and well.... starts a bit of a domino dominance effect.

Introducing Pomaika'i, a male Hawaiian green sea turtle we've known since 1996. "Pomaika'i" is Hawaiian meaning "lucky"
Pomaika'i is triply so. The U-shaped cut in his shell shows a narrow escape from a shark during some time in his life.
He is also a survivor of the tumor disease called Fibropapilloma.
Third-time lucky? He lives at Honokowai, West Maui. As you know, "Maui no ka oi"! |

TURTLE TRAX (turtles.org) and MISSISSAUGAWATCH (mississaugawatch.ca) wanted to know if humpback whales sang at night.
Rather than GOOGLING and finding out second-hand, we headed out in a kayak at sunset to discover that answer for ourselves.
The video portion of this clip is synchronized to the correct time of the underwater audio recording.
Recording was done using a conventional SONY digital recorder tucked inside an underwater camera housing. A soft dive weight inside the housing ensured negative buoyancy.
We were delighted with the results. |

TURTLE TRAX (turtles.org) and MISSISSAUGAWATCH (mississaugawatch.ca) went kayaking (yet again) in the hopes of having whales do a close pass.
As in previous attempts, we synchroniZed the video portion of this clip to the correct time on the underwater audio recording.
Recording of the whale songs was done using a conventional SONY digital recorder tucked inside an underwater camera housing. A soft dive weight inside the housing ensured negative buoyancy.
Just before noon on February 3, 2008, a pod of dolphins slooped by. We barely had time to get our camera out.
We expected get a record of dolphin clicks and chatter amid the whale songs but were surprised that didn't happen.
We're speculating that an expert ear might be able to pick up the "Dolphinese". Because we sure can't.
If you do, we'd appreciate hearing from you. (We only speak Honu.)

OK, OK, so it wasn't really a wipeout. But it WAS videotaped in Honokowai, West Maui! OK, here's the picture. Small swell. Kayak. Playin' da waves. Facing waves headon too tame (*yawn*). So we face the waves SIDEWAYS. More challenging. Such FUN! Then oopsie... |

On August 20, 2007 we discovered a Hawaiian green turtle (honu) with fishing line and a gallon jug float tangled in her left front flipper.
Considering that just a few days earlier we'd sighted a large tiger shark in the area, we did not want this turtle spending the night impaired in this way.
Not to mention, we've known this turtle since 2000. |
