December 26, 2007: The eagles enjoy themselves at Goldstream Estuary. Juveniles spar with each other over food. Adults don't like to share, either! The cameras are located at Goldstream Provincial Park, 16 km northwest of Victoria on southern Vancouver Island, B.C., Canada. From late October through December of each year, the Goldstream River is the site of an annual salmon spawning run. Chum, coho and chinook salmon enter the river via Finlayson Arm from the Pacific Ocean. The Estuary is closed to the public during this time, and as a result bald eagles have become common there. The eagles feed on the dead salmon and nest in the area during the summer.
Salmon Fishing Banned on Pacific Coast
Time :

Federal fisheries managers on Friday took the initial step toward imposing what could be the strictest limits ever on West Coast salmon fishing amid a precipitous drop in fish returning to California's Sacramento Valley. The Pacific Fishery Management Council unanimously adopted three options for sport and commercial fishing off the Pacific Coast, including an unprecedented complete shutdown of fishing off California and Oregon. "This is a major disaster. We've never had one ever like this," council chairman Donald Hansen said after the vote. "It will have a major impact on California commercial fisheries for salmon, recreational fisheries, California charters."

The city is located on the tip of the San Francisco Peninsula, with the Pacific Ocean to the west, San Francisco Bay to the east, and the Golden Gate to the north. In 1776, the Spanish settled the tip of the peninsula, establishing a fort at the Golden Gate and a mission named for Francis of Assisi. The California Gold Rush in 1848 propelled the city into a period of rapid growth. After being devastated by the 1906 earthquake and fire, San Francisco was quickly rebuilt. San Francisco is a popular international tourist destination renowned for its steep rolling hills, an eclectic mix of Victorian and modern architecture, and a cosmopolitan population that is highly diverse both ethnically and in sexual orientation. While the climate includes chilly summer fog, the winters are mild. Famous landmarks include the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, the cable cars, Coit Tower, and Chinatown. Contents History Main article: History of San Francisco, California The earliest archaeological evidence of inhabitation of the territory of the city of San Francisco dates to 3000 BC.[6] The Yelamu group of the Ohlone people resided in several small villages when a Spanish exploration party, led by Don Gaspar de Portolà arrived on November 2, 1769, the first documented European discovery of San Francisco Bay.[7] Seven years later, on March 28, 1776 the Spanish established a fort, followed by a mission, Mission San Francisco de Asís (Mission Dolores). Mission San Francisco de Asís (Mission Dolores) Upon independence from Spain in 1821, the area became part of Mexico. In 1835, Englishman William Richardson erected the first significant homestead outside the immediate vicinity of the Mission Dolores,[8] near a boat anchorage around what is today Portsmouth Square. Together with Mission Alcalde Francisco de Haro, he laid out a street plan for the expanded settlement, and the town, named Yerba Buena, began to attract American settlers. Commodore John D. Sloat claimed California for the United States on July 7, 1846, during the Mexican-American War, and Captain John Berrien Montgomery arrived to claim Yerba Buena two days later. Yerba Buena was renamed San Francisco the next year.[9] Despite its attractive location as a port and naval base, San Francisco was still a small settlement with inhospitable geography. The California Gold Rush brought a flood of treasure seekers Here are some details about this beautiful bridge which gives you an opportunity to view the gorgeous site of the city. GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE
Rush Hour?
Time :
2 : 15
October 27, 2007: Traffic picked up this afternoon as the fish seem to rush to their spawning area. This video was taken with the new under water camera. You can see the rocks and sand on the bottom of the estuary. There are seven species of North American Pacific salmon: chinook, chum, coho, cutthroat, pink, steelhead and sockeye. Although each species has a unique appearance and different habits, they share many characteristics. They are anadromous - meaning their eggs are laid and hatch in freshwater, and their young spend at least some of their early lives in freshwater before swimming to the sea to grow and mature. Their ability to find their way home again when it is time to reproduce is one of the most remarkable things about salmon. In fact, salmon have been known to travel thousands of kilometres in the ocean, as well as battle strong river currents and waterfalls to reach their hatching place. Pacific salmon, with the exception of cutthroat and steelhead, spawn only once and die within days of digging their nests or "redds" in the gravel and mating. Their bodies float down rivers and decompose, filling the water with nutrients for other species of animals and plants. Live and dead salmon are also important food for birds like eagles and gulls, and mammals such as bears and otters. In this way, salmon contribute to the health of freshwater ecosystems. Salmon lay their eggs in nests or "redds" that the females dig in the gravels of streams or in some cases lakeshores. The gravel must be free of silt and well oxygenated. Young salmon require cold, clean, well-oxygenated water. They are very sensitive to any activities that reduce the quality of their freshwater habitat. Industrial activities like forestry and farming, and other human activities like building roads and cities, can damage or destroy freshwater salmon habitats if they are not carried out in an environmentally friendly manner. Monterey Salmon survey Trolling downriggers FBR tips tricks
Time :
4 : 47
This is the final results of a couple of days of filming underwater salmon. There was approximately 3 hours plus of film (for each camera) where we were actually trolling. This project started a couple months back when I got the word that the Sacramento salmon return was low and folks are thinking that there is no food or salmon out there. Wouldn't it be nice if we could get some film underwater off our favorite fishing area so as Monterey so that folks who make decisions based on best salmon guesses would have more info to work with. I have watched this film very closely and the results in my opinion there is a lot of fish out there and tons of krill. We was shocked to see so much food in this early. These fish were running deep and generally in the area of the krill masses. I wanted to get the salmon to come up and fall into camera view range just so we could see them on the camera. To get a clear picture of the fish, we ran with very short 2 foot leaders to get the fish as close to the camera as possible. If you run the lure back father you get much more attacking of the lure and if you run FBR™ close the salmon lurk more as they are suspicious that something is wrong and turn away before striking. I brought out all of my tricks on this by designing a special FBR™ rig with dual mini lite stick and then running yarn for both a visual effect and have something for their teeth to grab. (No hook or sleeve were using during the filming) The FBR™was rigged with 4 pieces of yarn (two 14 inch pieces where main line was tied in the center and when double over forms four 7 inch pieces. The yarn twirls and wraps nicely as it rotates around the FBR™ and with the lights flashing with rotation gives off a impressive appearance. The second day I also bought some can tuna and we put a little tuna in the FBR™ head and cut off the anchovy nose a little to allow room for the tuna. We soak the FBR™ rig in the tuna juice just before lowering it on the downrigger. Jose really did a good job in getting us on scene and really did a good job in helping make this film. So folks now you have some of my secrets on rigging FBR™. This will give us a better view of the overall food supply and salmon. Thanks you for caring and please view the film and make your own opinion on food and salmon. You and your kids future in fishing is at a crisis...You must act now, get involve. Fish for big hog salmon at Monterey famous Hog Farm bite off Point Pinos. Got into them right away...with first one on a clear FBR™ at 90 feet depth on downrigger. Shortly the second salmon came on a red FBR at 90 feet on the wire. Had more take downs but nobody home. Weather was turning bad and headed back before it got to rough. The Hog Farm is the 300 foot line around Point Pinos and is referred to that as that where a lot of big hog salmon or caught real early in the season.
