This is a short clip from an early b&w Mickey Mouse cartoon called "The Opry House". It shows the first time in an animated film where the "Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 in C-sharp minor" is used. This tune would become famous in animation history due to later cartoons such as "Rhapsody in Rivets", "The Cat Concerto" and "Rhapsody Rabbit". And if you watch closely, you'll see that "Rhapsody Rabbit" borrowed heavily upon this performance by Mickey, as they use the same general situation and have a number of similar gags.

Mickey plans on building PLUTO'S DREAM HOUSE - with a big assist from a magic lamp.
This is a wonderful little film and boasts a hilarious performance from the lamp itself. Things really get wild in the climax when it starts taking orders from Mickey's malfunctioning radio. There is no genii - the lamp is enchanted and speaks with a voice that will remind some viewers of Jack Benny's Rochester (Eddie Anderson). Mickey gets his unique voice from Walt Disney.
Walt Disney (1901-1966) was always intrigued by drawings. As a lad in Marceline, Missouri, he sketched farm animals on scraps of paper; later, as an ambulance driver in France during the First World War, he drew figures on the sides of his vehicle. Back in Kansas City, along with artist Ub Iwerks, Walt developed a primitive animation studio that provided animated commercials and tiny cartoons for the local movie theaters. Always the innovator, his ALICE IN CARTOONLAND series broke ground in placing a live figure in a cartoon universe. Business reversals sent Disney & Iwerks to Hollywood in 1923, where Walt's older brother Roy became his lifelong business manager & counselor. When a mildly successful series with Oswald The Lucky Rabbit was snatched away by the distributor, the character of Mickey Mouse sprung into Walt's imagination, ensuring Disney's immortality. The happy arrival of sound technology made Mickey's screen debut, STEAMBOAT WILLIE (1928), a tremendous audience success with its use of synchronized music. The SILLY SYMPHONIES soon appeared, and Walt's growing crew of marvelously talented animators were quickly conquering new territory with full color, illusions of depth and radical advancements in personality development, an arena in which Walt's genius was unbeatable. Mickey's feisty, naughty behavior had captured millions of fans, but he was soon to be joined by other animated companions: temperamental Donald Duck, intellectually-challenged Goofy and energetic Pluto. All this was in preparation for Walt's grandest dream - feature length animated films. Against a blizzard of doomsayers, Walt persevered and over the next decades delighted children of all ages with the adventures of Snow White, Pinocchio, Dumbo, Bambi & Peter Pan. Walt never forgot that his fortunes were all started by a mouse, or that simplicity of message and lots of hard work always pay off.

RAMALLAH, West Bank -- A Hamas-run television channel has defied a Palestinian government request to axe a controversial children's cartoon in which a Mickey Mouse look-alike urges resistance against Israel.
A senior official working for Al Aqsa (Jerusalem) television in the Gaza Strip said that the program - "Tomorrow's Pioneers" - would air as normal this Friday in defiance of information minister Mustafa Barghouti.
"The program will continue and it will be broadcast tomorrow at 4.00 pm [1300 GMT]. Mustafa Barghouti misunderstood the issue," said the official on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the press. Earlier, the information ministry in the West Bank city of Ramallah said: "A politically-oriented children's television program was withdrawn by the Al Aqsa TV station today following a request by the ministry of information."
Barghouti said that the program adopted a "mistaken approach" to the Palestinian struggle against Israeli occupation and that it was wrong to use children's programs to convey political messages. In the program, the Mickey Mouse look-alike named Farfur and a little girl urge resistance against Israel and the United States - along with stressing the importance of daily prayers and drinking milk.
The program drew strong protests from Israeli and Jewish groups, with the Anti-Defamation League slamming the station for promoting a message of radical Islam, anti-Semitism and hatred of the West.
"When you take a Mickey Mouse-like character and deliberately use it to promote an ideology of hatred, obviously it's going to have an impact on children and their thinking," said Abraham Foxman, ADL national director. "For all of their attempts to appear more moderate, Hamas is still willing to indoctrinate children into their culture of hate," added Foxman. Hamas is the senior partner in the Palestinian national unity government and blacklisted as a terrorist organization in the West. The Islamist movement controls a television and radio network both called Al Aqsa and has just launched a newspaper. |

The cartoon is notable for being the first Mickey Mouse film in Technicolor, although two more Mickey cartoons were made in black and white before they were produced in colors on a permanent basis; Mickey's Service Station and Mickey's Kangaroo. It is said that when conductor Arturo Toscanini first saw the cartoon in a movie theater, he was so delighted with it that he ran up to the projection booth and asked the projectionist to run it again.
In 1994 it was voted #3 of the 50 Greatest Cartoons of all time by members of the animation field. Also, according to Leonard Maltin in a commentary for this film when it was included in one of the Walt Disney Treasures, The Band Concert was remade (somewhat) years later as Symphony Hour. |

The Mad Doctor was a classic Mickey Mouse cartoon released in 1933.
The plot centers on the title character, a mad scientist who has captured Mickey's dog, Pluto. Mickey tries to rescue him before the Mad Doctor can perform his grotesque experiment: switching Pluto's body with that of a chicken. Mickey eventually gets caught and straped onto a table to get cut open. We then find Mickey in bed and woken up by Pluto, turning out that the whole thing was just a bad dream.
The short's horror overtones made it unusual for a Mickey Mouse cartoon. Some theaters refused to show it, believing it to be too scary for children. It did, however, provide the inspiration for one of Mickey's 1995 comeback shorts, Runaway Brain. |

Mickey visits the zoo, where he makes friends with a baby seal by feeding it a couple of fish from his picnic basket. The seal stows away and goes home with Mickey, where for a while, only Pluto sees it. But it climbs into Mickey's bath, and he eventually figures it out and returns the tot. He tells his elders of the wonders of Mickey's bath and scrub-brush, and Mickey returns home to find a welcoming committee.
