The phony bear faked it in Kilauea Volcano also. He taped most of the show a few hundred feet from the highway. Most of the scenes in the show don't exist in the area he was supposed to be in: avocado trees, lava tube, tropical forest are all in different parts of the island. I have hiked this area hundreds of times. I can understand how people who have not been to the area may think it's legitimate, but I was surprised how easy it was to dupe the Discovery Channel. It would be suicidal to follow the advice given by this show.
In this clip, the phony bear is supposed to be next to the ocean and is trying to cross these fissures to get there. He is, in fact, at the SW Rift Zone at the 4000 foot summit of Kilauea about 50 highway miles away from his very next scene next to the ocean. These fissures are a very popular tourist viewing area. They are located next to the parking area on the Crater Rim Drive shown on the clip.

bear grylls is my idol. do u want to know why? even with the recent allegations of bear staying in motels when he should be in the wild, i still have lots of respect for him. i have many reasons why i admire him. first, i'd like to say that the show man vs. wild has been great entertainment although the show is fake. in my opinion, i haven't found a single episodes ( so far ) mundane at all. i think he gives out pretty good rudimentary fundamental advices; however, if u really want to learn survival skills, watching man vs. wild is obviously not enough. my reasons i admire bear:
1. After breaking his back in three places in a parachuting accident, he fought his way to recovery, and two years later became the youngest Briton to climb Mount Everest and survive, aged only 23. He has since led record-breaking expeditions across the world.
2.at 7.22am on May 26th 1998, Bear entered The Guinness Book of Records by becoming the youngest, and one of only around thirty, British climbers to have successfully climbed Everest and returned alive. He was only 23 years old.
3.he has a Karate Black Belt and also spent three years with the British Special Air Service (21 SAS).
4. Bear is a passionate believer in Global Angels as one of the most effective ways of reaching the world's most needy charities.

While the Bear was pretending to be searching for the ocean in the lava wilderness, the footage was actually taped a few hundred feet from the Crater Rim Drive on the summit of Kilauea.
These clips show the fissures in the SW Rift Zone near the summit of Kilauea at the 4000 foot elevation. The fissure scenes shown are all within 1/4 mile from the road. They are the same fissures shown in the Discovery Channel in the Man vs Wild episode set in Kilauea .
The episode follows an actor who plays a survival expert as he makes his way from Pu'u O'o to the ocean. This episode is available for viewing in youtube. You can see the scenes in the last ten minutes of the tv episode.
Just as the actor is about to reach the ocean, he must cross the fissures to get to safety. But since the fissures are at the summit, the Discovery Channel moved that section of the island 19 miles and 4000 feet lower so that the actor could overcome this one last obstacle--a feat that has put Moses to shame.
Most of the episode was pretty faked up, but the last few minutes were beyond being a complete sham.
