Some points for Linux off the top of my head:
- Free (as in speech). I have the freedom to tweak the system as I wish.
- DRM Free
- Superior method of software updates, installation
- Solid stability (servers I run have been up for 1+yrs, my desktop 1+ month)
- Can scale down to very old/obscure hardware (I have a Linux file server running an old 266, 24MB ram
- Virtually Spyware/Virus free
- Variety of system tools not available in Windows. Extensive programming interface.
- Very cool eye-candy ahead of other Operating systems. Youtube search "compiz", see the upcoming KDE, see the current version of Gnome.
- I know exactly what my computer is doing. Can't say the same thing with Windows, OS X
- Although I agree gaming is lacking, I personally don't game on PC but what I do see is the amazing benefit of being able to have access to the thousands of OSS packages out there.
- Luxury of using technology backed up by contributions and usage by companies such as IBM, HP, Sun, Google, many governments, military orgs, NASA, universities, super computer research. Outside the desktop Windows presence is not the greatest.
- Constant updates to all my software. You can choose to run cutting edge or run stable.
- Ability to decide what to install and what not to (can't say the same thing about XP)
- Freedom of not depending on one single vendor. I know my needs will not be put aside by the needs of a corporation anytime soon.
- Decades of solid tested UNIX (like) technology (see OS X benefits, not XP though)
- The ability take a part in the development process of the OS I use.
- Oh, did I mention it's free as in beer? |

And Ebay believes installing open source software on an open platform (as is stated on Sony's site) is a "copyright violation". Apparently they don't understand open source...so my auction of this unit was cancelled without notification. Thanks, Ebay... |

ABSTRACT
The Linux Kernel, who is developing it, how they are doing it,
and why you should care.
This talk describes the rate of development for the Linux
kernel, and how the development model is set up to handle such a
large and diverse developer population and huge rate of change.
It will detail who is doing the work, and what companies, if
any, are sponsering it. Finally, it will go into why companies
like Google, and any other that uses or depends on Linux, should
care about this development. Lots of numbers and pretty graphs
will be shown to keep the audience awake.
Speaker: Greg Kroah Hartman
Greg Kroah-Hartman is a Linux kernel maintainer for the USB,
driver core, sysfs, and debugfs portions of the kernel as well
as being one half of the -stable kernel release team. He
currently works for Novell as a Fellow doing various kernel
related things and has written a few books from O'Reilly about
Linux development in the past. |

This is Xgl/Compiz(now known as Beryl Project) running on my secondary comp which is a 4 year old dell with 2.4 ghz P4 proc, Nvidia 6600 GT gfx card, and only 512 megs of RAM.
The music is Sidology Ep 2: Trinity, By Machinae Supremacy.
This Linux install was SuSE 10.1 and I now use Sabayon Linux. Which you can get here:

The theme is a custom theme; which unfortunately I lost when my main hardrive died on me. :(

1. install linux
2. install compiz
3. enable 3d cube, wobbly windows..ect
4. set cube opacity slider BOTH to 25.
5. use a skydome and check off "animate"

Note:
Many of these effects might be seen as pure "eye candy". However, some of them like the scaling function (which is the linux adequate of MacOS's Exposé function) will speed up your everyday work.

HiVision makes one of the worlds cheapest Linux laptops at $98 using a new cheaper chipset, WiFi, 1GB flash storage, it runs Linux, 3 USB ports, Ethernet, SDHC card reader, audio in and out. Voice-chat, Skype, multi-tabbed Firefox browser support, Abiword for word processing. Automatic online software updates. Their current model is based on a public chinese low cost case mold design and is running on a MIPS processor, they may soon also support an ARM9 with DSP as the processor and they are showing their own nice looking case design molds. All running on smooth Linux interfaces. In this video, I got to borrow a review sample of the laptop overnight, and I try to show you all the browser and other software interfaces in this extended video review of this cheap MIPS based laptop. ARM and DSP is the way that I hope that most cheap laptops are going to be based on in the near future, Google will hopefully make a great Chrome browser for this kind of Laptop and hopefully that the geniuses at OLPC soon will announce that they will work to improve ARM and DSP based laptops in XO-1.5 and XO-2 designs.

A lot of people have been sending me messages asking for help but I am too busy to help 3 people a day install this onto their ipods. Visit ipodlinux.org for the bootloader and the linux part of the software and rockbox.org for the rockbox software which runs doom. I think the rockbox website has the download links for the doom if not just search for them. Please note that I installed this when there wasn't any easy method of installing as there is now. I messed up my ipod really bad but managed to fix it. If a 15 year old can manage to do that with nothing but common sense all of you should be able to install it with no problem. PLEASE STOP MESSAGING ME ASKING FOR HELP THIS IS ALL THE HELP I CAN GIVE YOU!!! |
