Italy travel: Pompeii. Most of our Perillo Tours Familia is visible in this segment, as we meet a resident of Pompeii. You can see the anguish, as he was caught in the painful last gasps of life. Wow. Mt. Vesuvius had been proclaimed an extinct volcano by the experts of the day, so the eruption was quite a surprise to the residents of Pompeii. They didn't have time to escape. With some clever techniques, archaeologists were able to pour plaster molds of the residents of Pompeii where they died. Several thousand more non-repetitive pictures could have been obtained in the halls of the Vatican Museum, and much better pictures of the Sistine Chapel could have been obtained if proper video had been allowed. Then, Pope Benedict VXI gave his Wednesday blessing of the crowd in St. Peter's Square. The youngest member of our Perillo Tours Familia pointed out that "it really should be called St. Peter's Circle", and right she is! Italy travel: Florence. Dancing at "The Vulture's" Ristorante. Mark, a man who didn't choose to dance at his own wedding, performs his rendition of "Dancing with Cement Shoes." This performance is trumped by the other tour group at the restaurant, who truly demonstrate arrhythmic dance moves. Fortunately, Nancy's husband Vern makes our Perillo Tours Familia proud with moves that would make Glenn Miller smile. The kids wonder "Is this really what adults do for fun?" YMCA, and "Twist"-ing which looked more like "Break"-ing. But all in good fun at Pizzeria Ristorante Falciani. Then, a demonstration on how 24 karat gold leaf is transferred on to leather, in one of the two shops that Perillo recommends. The other shop had a bonus: Aurelio, who looked liked he could be George Clooney's brother, was working there. Not kidding about how much less expensive Aurelio's leather jackets were as compared to the first store. Also very cool how Aurelio gave us a very personalized lesson on how to apply our initials in 24 karat gold on to the leather jackets we purchased!

Here we stop outside Positano, where our hired taxi driver/tour guide (also named Tony, like our main Perillo Tours guide) gives us a local person's perspective. Tony knew which turnouts on the drive had the best views of the Amalfi Coast. He also knew which turnouts might contain the previous evening's alcoholic and post-coital refuse (inappropriate for our G-rated crowd). Tony was good! Besides being very informative, his accent was just a pleasure to listen to. Italy travel: Rome, the Christian Catacombs (beginning). Unlike the Catacombs in Paris, these catacombs had no bones. However, it was a rather amazingly intricate and extensive network of tunnels! The video shows that you wouldn't want to play 'hide and seek' here. The one that we visited had tens of thousands of bodies interred in it's time. All the half arches you see in this video held a body or two (or more); the tiny spaces held children. Our Perillo Tours Familia walked single file down these narrow corridors. The sterility of the current presentation belies the magnitude of 10,000 corpses decomposing; the stench must have been overwhelming. Italy travel: Rome. The statues undergoing restoration outside Piazza Navona's church will be worth another look when they are completed. The relatively minor fountain/statue at one end of Piazza Navona was impressive enough! Italy travel: Positano, on the Amalfi Coast of Italy. This location was high on our list of things to see in Italy. Our Perillo Tours optional trip to the Isle of Capri was a bit expensive for the six of us, but even if it was included, we would still have opted for our trip to Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. Tony the Taxicab driver / Tourguide negotiated some wonderful seasonings for us; a small dash of bruschetta on your tongue tasted like a pizza exploded in your mouth. Very tasty! Then Tony easily negotiated a "two way street", a passage barely big enough to be considered a sidewalk in Midtown Manhattan. Italy travel: Florence. Church of Florence named Santa Maria del Fiore. Wish we would have had time to climb to the top. Florence is such an action packed and walkable city. We did get a spectacular overview from Perillo Tours, but Florence would be worth a week's trip all by itself. Race for third place in the 'world's largest cathedrals' competition? That competition kept the construction of this cathedral going for decades. "Prosperous Florence wanted to surpass in grandeur its Tuscan rivals, Pisa and Siena, with a yet more magnificent church, grander in size and more richly adorned. This cathedral was, as a result, the largest in Europe when completed, with room for 30,000 people. Italy travel: Florence. First impressions are not so good on the first night. It's difficult to leave the serenity of Venice for the traffic of Florence! But by the second day we warmed up to Florence. After a nice walk from the hotel, our Perillo Tours Familia saw the eight foot naked giant David. No video allowed, of course. We did get video demonstrating that finding a parking spot, even for a motorcycle, was difficult!
