St.Petersburg, December 2007. Here are some photos and clips from the lecture held by Synaulia (www.soundcenter.it) at the Otium Ludens exhibition of the ancient roman frescoes of Stabiae, Naples, now hosted at the Hermitage Museum. Only two of the seven Stabiae villas have been excavated after the Vesuvius eruption of 79 d.C. These villas were the residence of the refined intellectual artists of the classic roman epoch. Their frescoes have remained intact, submerged and preserved under the ashes of the vulcano, as in nearby Pompeii. Nature and poetry are celebrated here: Goddess Flora, Leda, Melpomene, Diana, Bacchus and the Nymphs, Arianna and Dionysus, the Maenads and their skywalks. Walter Maioli, Nathalie van Ravenstein and Luce have been researaching for decades, and reproducing, the original musical instruments of the ancients, by means of studying the original iconology from the archeological finds, as well as their application and reproduction through his/herstory. At the root of the research, an in-depth study of sound as the primary element of creation. Here Nathalie demonstrates on lyra, cetra, horn, pan-flute, oblique flute, tympanum, cymbals. With Erika Rombaldoni and Cinziaelena Defendenti. Thanks to Yana Petrova for the footage. |

The explosive debut introducing Russian gangster Alexei Volkovoy—not since Robert Ludlum's Jason Bourne has a hero shifted so effortlessly between hunter and hunted.
A firefight reverberates through Moscow's dark, rain-soaked streets; shattered glass and screams echo in the air. In the lawless ways of Russia's capital city, the gunmen melt away into the night. Two men are dead, the targets not what they seem.
A shadowy figure lopes along the riverbank outside the Kremlin walls. Known to all as Volk, a battle-hardened veteran of Russia's brutal war in Chechnya, he prowls Moscow's grim alleyways, a knife concealed in his prosthetic foot at all times.
As both a major player in the black market and a covert agent for the Russian military, Volk serves two masters: Maxim, a psychotic Azeri mafia kingpin with hordes of loyal informers; and a man known only as the General, to whom Volk is mysteriously indebted. By his side is Valya, an exotic beauty charged with protecting her lover from his unsavory associates. Valya is the most dangerous weapon in Volk's arsenal.
Together they are commissioned to steal a long-lost da Vinci painting called Leda and the Swan from St. Petersburg's Hermitage Museum. Leda's ethereal radiance is undeniably captivating and incalculably dangerous. Volk must choose which powerful man he will betray in order to escape with the painting—and with his life.
With the high-octane rush and vivid intensity of a feature film, Volk's Game delivers at every turn, announcing Alexei Volkovoy as the boldest hero of a new generation. |

Гробница алтайского скифа (The Tomb of the Scythian Prince)

Mihail Shemyakin - International Circassian Artist
(1998, Chemiakin's Monument to Giacomo Casanova was installed in Venice in honor of the bicentenary of Casanova's death. Mihail Shemyakin, Tsrim Ruslan, Dumanish Auledin)
Mihail Chemiakin was born in Moscow in 1943, grew up in occupied East Germany, and returned to Russia in 1957 where he was admitted to the Special High School of the Repin Academy of Art in Leningrad. He was expelled from art school for failing to conform to Socialist Realist norms, and from 1959-1971 worked as a laborer in various capacities. He was subjected to compulsory treatment at a mental institution, which was a standard way of dealing with ideological dissidents at that time. For five years he worked on the maintenance crew of the Hermitage Museum. In 1967, the artist founded the St. Petersburg Group and developed the philosophy of Metaphysical Synthesism, dedicated to the creation of a new form of icon painting based on the study of religious art of all ages and peoples.
In 1971 Chemiakin was forced out of the USSR by the Soviet authorities. He settled first in France, then moved to New York City in 1981. While in Paris he edited and published Apollon-77, an almanach of post-Stalinist art, poetry and photography in which many of the "non-conformists" were first published. Chemiakin also recorded and published the first disks of gypsy singers Vladimir Poliakoff and Aliocha Dmitrievich, both of whom lived in Paris. He worked for several years with Russian bard Vladimir Vysotsky, systematically recording his songs for what became a seven-record set of Vysotsky's music. Chemiakin continues to publish books and music by under-recognized artists under the aegis of the Apollon Art Research Foundation.

The Cucuteni culture is a late Neolithic archaeological culture that flourished between ca. 5508 BC and 2750 BC in the Dniester-Dnieper region of modern-day Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine. The culture was named after Cucuteni, Iaşi county, Romania, where the first objects associated with this culture were discovered in 1884 and excavations started in 1909. In 1897, similar objects were excavated in Trypillia (Трипiлля; Russian: Tripolye), Kiev Governorate, Ukraine. As a result, the culture has been known in Soviet, Russian, and Ukrainian publications as Tripolie culture or Tripolian culture. A compromise name is Cucuteni-Trypillia.
As of 2003, about 2000 sites of Trypillian culture have been identified in Romania, Ukraine, and Moldova. J.P. Mallory reports that the "culture is attested from well over a thousand sites in the form of everything from small villages to vast settlements comprised of hundreds of dwellings surrounded by multiple ditches" (Encyclopedia of Indo-European Culture). There were cities with 10-15,000 citizens in the Tripolye culture. It was centered on the middle to upper Dniester River (in the present-day Republic of Moldova) with an extension in the northeast to as far as the Dnieper. The largest collection of artifacts from the Cucuteni-Trypollia culture can be found in museums in Russia, Ukraine, and Romania, including the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg and the Museum of History & Archaeology in Piatra Neamţ.
The Cucuteni culture has been called the first urban culture in Europe. The Trypollia settlements were usually located on a plateau, fortified with earthworks and ditches. The earliest villages consisted of ten to fifteen households. In their heyday, settlements expanded to include several hundred large adobe huts, sometimes with two stories. These houses were typically warmed by an oven and had round windows. |

Inside the Hermitage - St Petersburg
Although a little late coming, here a postcard from the grand old Hermitage or Winter Palace in St Petersburg, Russia.
With over 400 exhibits and 1000 rooms, the palace is packed to the brim with masterpieces and antiquities of the world. By the end of the day (even midday), you are in museum fatigue mode and completely exhausted.
In this little postcard I wanted to show you the sense of crowds and endless rooms and ceilings of grandeur. Catherine the great was instrumental in much of the collection and I have included a little portrait of her at the end.
By the way, the music was Tfer-recorded in a Krackow street (Poland) and is of two musicians (bassoon and clarinet) entertaining the crowds... just one of those joys you encounter. |

The Hermitage Amsterdam will be dedicating its eighth exhibition to the beauties of Art Nouveau. The objects produced within this movement are the highlights of the Western decorative arts collection in the Hermitage in St Petersburg. This collection of Art Nouveau has not previously been on show in the Netherlands. Amongst the major works are the gifts to the last tsars made by the glassmakers Émile Gallé and the Daum brothers; works by René Lalique and Carl Fabergé will also be included. |
