This video clip was taken on July 31, 2007 during my trip to Austria, my home country. First I did some discoveries in my home town of Weiz: I explored the famous pilgrimage church called Weizbergkirche which was built in late baroque style and consecrated in 1776. What astounded me was the size and beauty of this church, considering that it serves a city of barely more than 9000 people. Then I moved on to another architectural gem in the Weiz area: Schloss Thannhausen or Thannhausen Castle was built in the 1500s and features a gorgeous Renaissance courtyard with three levels of arcades and is still often used for concerts and special events.
After an interesting drive through the Weizklamm (Weiz Gorge) on a main road framed by vertical limestone cliffs that is so narrow that often it doesn't accommodate two cars side by side I arrived in the mountain village of St. Kathrein am Offenegg, a popular tourism destination with a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains. Then I explored another touristic highlight of the Weiz area: the "Katerloch", one of the largest limestone caves in Austria with a wide variety of dripstones, many of which are reminiscent of animals, human beings and other identifiable objects. The highlight of this cave is the so-called "Seenparadies", the "Lake Paradise", an underground lake located 135 metres below the cave entrance. I had a chance to interview the operator of the cave after visiting this underground wonderland and learning about the interesting history of this cave.

Canadian Labour Congress condemns US Actions against Cuba
The Canadian Labour Congress has issued a strong letter condemning recent US gov't actions taken against Cuba.
The new measures proposed by the US "Commission for Assistance to a Free Cuba" further restrict American citizens ability to travel to Cuba or support relatives there. The measures also include the allocation of an additional $59 million US dollars per year to destabilize Cuban society.
Unions, labour councils and community organizations should consider adopting similar positions opposing aggressive US actions against Cuba.
Following is the complete text of the CLC letter to Paul Martin on Cuba.
Bill Saunders, President, Vancouver and District Labour Council
June 2, 2004
The Right Honourable Paul Martin
Prime Minister of Canada
House of Commons
Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0A6
Dear Mr. Prime Minister:
On behalf of the three million working men and women affiliated to the Canadian Labour Conress, I write to urge you to clearly condemn the recent hostile measures taken by the U.S. government against Cuba and to use every opportunity to express concern to the U.S. government about the impact and legality of the new measures.
The new measures recently announced seek to strengthen and deepen the failed policies of economic embargo of the past four decades. The Cuban people have withstood the ill effects of the U.S. blockade on their island and have built what many consider to be outstanding improvements in social indicators such as health, literacy, and education and made social gains unrivalled in the developing world. These latest repugnant measures by the U.S. government will not succeed either, but they will bring more suffering and hardship to the people of Cuba.
These new measures as proposed by the U.S. government's so-called Commission for Assistance to a Free Cuba include giving $59 million to try to destabilize Cuban society, to train personnel to do so, to intensify misinformation about Cuba including the use of military aircraft for radio broadcasting - all activities aimed at curbing growing tourism to the country and increasing the day-to-day hardships in life for ordinary Cubans. As well, Cuban-Americans residing in the U.S. are being subjected to further restrictions to their contacts with their families in Cuba. Also, persons of third countries may be subject to arbitrary charges and arrest in the U.S. for having invested in Cuba. In the case of Canadians this is a flagrant contravention of the Order of the Attorney-General of Canada, made under the Foreign Extraterritorial Measures Act which prohibits Canadian corporations from complying with the extraterritorial measures of the Helms-Burton Act.
We urge you, Mr. Prime Minister to immediately reject in the strongest possible terms any perceived compliance or acquiescence by your government in any of these draconian measures designed to hasten "regime change" in Cuba. It is up to the Cuban people to determine their own future. Self-determination is a human right and we would expect the Canadian government to uphold this "Canadian value".
We would also expect the Canadian government to uphold the principle of sovereignty of nations especially in the face of the hypocrisy of well-known recent violations of democratic principles committed by the United States government in Iraq, Haiti and in Venezuela.
Canadian workers support Canada's independent policy of many years towards Cuba and strongly encourage Canada to continue to seek ways to open spaces for contact between the peoples of our two countries. We believe that this is the most positive way to work with Cuban counterparts on the challenges they face with regards to human rights, use of capital punishment and reconciliation.
We, as Canadians, must roundly condemn and reject this latest illegal and inhumane U.S. government interference in Cuban affairs, affirm the internationally-recognized right to the self-determination of countries, and proudly proclaim our independence and sovereignty in pursuing a foreign policy that continues to maintain and develop our friendly relations with Cuba.
Sincerely,
Kenneth V. Georgetti, President |

This video clip was taken on August 5, 2007 during a country excursion from my Austrian home town of Weiz. My brother and sister-in-law took me to one of the major sights in the area: the Riegersburg, a medieval fortress built originally in the 11th century on the basaltic rock of a former volcano. 11 bastions, 6 gates and 2 moats protect this fortress which was built in the border area of the Austrian empire to protect against invaders from the east which included Magyars and Turks.
During the 17th century the castle' history was enriched by two legendary female protagonists: the artistocratic Freifrau Katharina Elisabeth von Galler who expanded the castle, and her servant, the "flower witch" (Blumenhexe) Katharina Paldauf who was accused of being a witch for her ability to grow roses in winter and burned on the stake. After a brief stroll through the town of Riegersburg we drove the Castle of Kapfenstein, also located on a former volcano, where we had a delicious lunch in the castle outdoor patio which provided a magnificent view of the surround Styrian and Slovenian mountains and hills. Then I had a brief adventure on a motor scooter and got ready for my last evening in Austria, ready to say goodbye to my home town and the province of Styria -- the Green Heart of Austria.

Havana
Havana, officially Ciudad de La Habana, is the capital city, major port, and leading commercial centre of Cuba. The city is one of the 14 Cuban provinces. The city/province has 2.4 million inhabitants, making Havana the largest city in both Cuba and the Caribbean region. The city extends mostly westward and southward from the bay, which is entered through a narrow inlet and which divides into three main harbours: Marimelena, Guasabacoa, and Atarés. The sluggish Almendares River traverses the city from south to north, entering the Straits of Florida a few miles west of the bay.

This clip was taken during my biking tour to Cherry Beach on September 6. I headed off from the east end after work through the Don Valley bike trail and past the eastern edge of the Distillery District to Toronto's harbour area. I went on Cherry Street past the Cirque de Soleil premises to Cherry Beach where a movie shot was taking place. I arrived as the crew was just filming a particular scene with a trailer when a small explosion went off and tons of smoke was billowing from the trailer. It must have been some sort of thriller, cop or action movie. Then I checked out the western edge of Cherry Beach with a peak over to the Toronto Islands and then continued cycling eastwards from Cherry Beach at the edge of the industrial area that is adjacent to the Leslie Street spit. I watched some dragonboat racers and continued onwards to Toronto's Eastern Beaches and explored the little peninsula at the foot of Coxwell Avenue, next to Ashbridges Bay. When I was done I watched some tennis at the Kew Gardens Tennis Club. It was a great little ride, about 33 km right after work. I'm trying to take advantage of the last few weeks of extended daylight hours before we head into the darkness of winter...
