Days before Senkwekwe and three other mountain gorillas were killed, journalist Paul Raffaele filmed Senkwekwe in the wild. He reports on the battle to save the world's mountain gorillas. In the mountains of the DRC, silverback gorilla Senkwekwe watches over his young family. A few weeks later, he was dead, alongside three females in his harem. It was the worst gorilla massacre in 25 years. "There's a threat to the gorillas from poaching, for the exotic pet trade", explains ranger Rob Muir. Gorillas now share their habitat with rebel militias, driven into the hills by UN peacekeepers. These rebels could have been responsible for the killing of another two mountain gorillas earlier. "They were stripped of all their flesh", describes Muir. |

Al Jazeera's Yvonne Ndege reports from Virunga National Park near the Democratic Republic of Congo's border with Rwanda on the endangered mountain gorillas who live in a vast expanse of forest there. There are only 720 of them left on earth. But nine of them have been killed since the beginning of this year. Tracking their footprints, Ndege ventured deep into the forest with a rangers' patrol to investigate the threats facing the mountain gorillas. The national park is the kind of habitat that gorillas need to survive. But it's also the theatre of an intense battle between government troops and rebels fighting alongside the renegade general Laurent Nkunda. It's not just the recent fighting that's wreaking havoc on the gorilla population. Poachers set snares, illegal "invaders" and also people going into the park to cut down the trees to make charcoal. |

Both the silverback mountain gorilla and the native African pygmy are creatures gravely threatened by modern society, and recent Ugandan preservation policy is another addition to their many troubles. Uganda has paid a good deal of money to move the pygmies out of the rainforest to preserve the natural wildlife (which draws tourists and, more importantly, income), and it has paid a good deal more towards the safeguarding of its native gorillas. However, the government of Uganda has not always been so generous; during the rule of Idi Amin in the 1970s, soldiers regularly slaughtered the endangered wildlife, including the gorillas, for food, profit, or simply target practice.
Now, the pygmies struggle to adapt to their new lifestyle and to the loss of their home, and the future of the mountain gorilla remains uncertain. Whether or not Uganda's protection measures are to the benefit of all involved remains to be seen. |

Eco-tourism is helping to ensure the survival of the world's last wild mountain gorillas. Tourists pay up to 0 a day for the privilege of watching these animals in their natural habitat.
Leonidas Zimarinda has watched over Rwanda's gorillas for almost 30 years. "I track them until I find them and then keep an eye on them". Protecting these endangered animals has become high priority since the government realised just how lucrative eco-tourism could be. "The worth of gorilla permits is probably million a year", states Rosette Rugamba from Rwanda's tourist authority. In recent years, sales of permits have doubled. But not everyone with money is welcome. As gorillas share 98% of our DNA, they are vulnerable to our diseases. Anyone with a cold is turned away.

The three were each given a stocking packed with wood wool - perfect for building gorilla nests -- and the ultimate gorilla treats: sunflower seeds and popcorn!
Hiding the food in the stockings allows the gorillas to use their natural intelligence and curiosity to investigate their Christmas gifts -- the perfect festive enrichment activity.
Bobby and Effie -- the Zoo's breeding pair - opened their stockings in the day gym where their mornings are spent enjoying quality time together, while Zaire investigated her stocking on the island. |
