Roosevelt, only 62 in 1944, was in declining health since at least 1940. The strain of his paralysis and the physical exertion needed to compensate for it for over 20 years had taken their toll, as had many years of stress and a lifetime of chain-smoking. He had high blood pressure and long-term heart disease. Aware of the risk that Roosevelt would die during his fourth term, the party regulars insisted that Henry A. Wallace, who was seen as too pro-Soviet, be dropped as Vice President. After considering James F. Byrnes of South Carolina, and being turned down by Indiana Governor Henry F. Schricker,[53] Roosevelt replaced Wallace with the little known Senator Harry S. Truman. In the 1944 election, Roosevelt and Truman won 53% of the vote and carried 36 states, against New York Governor Thomas E. Dewey. |

"Franklin D. Roosevelt and the Democratic party carry forty-six states, losing only little Maine and Vermont, in the mightiest election victory scored by any political organization since the triumph of james Monroe in 1820. Dramatic pictures show outstanding events of an exciting day, with the President voting at Hyde Park, N. Y., and later receiving the cheers and congratulations of his neighbors, Gov. Landon casts his vote at Independence, Kan. Tremendous throngs jam Times Square, New York, celebrating the victory but others 'pay off' election bets in queer and amusing fashion." Scene from the 2003 documentary, The Corporation, about an attempted coup by industrialists (corporations) to overthrow president Franklin D. Roosevelt and the US Government during the 1930's.
Major General of the Marine Corps, Smedley Butler, was to lead the coup. Smedley, tired of being what he felt was a gangster for capitalism, balked and reported his findings to Congress.

As recognition of his senior position in the Allied command, on December 20, 1944, he was promoted to General of the Army equivalent to the rank of Field Marshal in most European armies. In this and the previous high commands he held, Eisenhower showed his great talents for leadership and diplomacy. Although he had never seen action himself, he won the respect of front-line commanders. He dealt skillfully with difficult subordinates such as Omar Bradley and Patton, and allies such as Winston Churchill, Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery and General Charles de Gaulle. He had fundamental disagreements with Churchill and Montgomery over questions of strategy, but these rarely upset his relationships with them. He negotiated with Soviet Marshal Zhukov, and such was the confidence that President Franklin D. Roosevelt had in him, he sometimes worked directly with Stalin, much to the chagrin of the British High Command who disliked being bypassed. During the advance towards Berlin, he came to the conclusion that Allied forces would suffer an estimated of 100,000 casualties before taking the city.[citation needed] The Soviet Army sustained 80,000 casualties during the fighting in and around Berlin, the last large number of casualties suffered in the war against Nazism. |

About this day of Thanksgiving...
In 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared that Thanksgiving would be the next-to-last Thursday of November rather than the last. With the country still in the midst of The Great Depression, Roosevelt thought this would give merchants a longer period to sell goods before Christmas. Increasing profits and spending during this period, Roosevelt hoped, would aid bringing the country out of the Depression. At the time, it was considered inappropriate to advertise goods for Christmas until after Thanksgiving. However, Roosevelt's declaration was not mandatory; twenty-three states went along with this recommendation, and 22 did not. Other states, like Texas, could not decide and took both weeks as government holidays. Roosevelt persisted in 1940 to celebrate his "Franksgiving," as it was termed. The U.S. Congress in 1941 split the difference and established that the Thanksgiving would occur annually on the fourth Thursday of November, which was sometimes the last Thursday and sometimes the next to last. On November 26 that year President Roosevelt signed this bill into U.S. law.
Since 1947, or possibly earlier, the National Turkey Federation has presented the President of the United States with one live turkey and two dressed turkeys. The live turkey is pardoned and lives out the rest of its days on a peaceful farm. While it is commonly held that this tradition began with Harry Truman in 1947, the Truman Library has been unable to find any evidence for this. Still others claim that that the tradition dates back to Abraham Lincoln pardoning his son's pet turkey.[2] Both stories have been quoted in more recent presidential speeches.
In more recent years, two turkeys have been pardoned, in case the original turkey becomes unavailable for presidential pardoning. Since 2003 the public has been invited to vote for the two turkeys' names. In 2006, they were named Flyer and Fryer. In 2005, they were named Marshmallow and Yam (who went on to live at Disneyland); 2004's turkeys were named Biscuit and Gravy; in 2003, Stars and Stripes.
Since 1970, a group of Native Americans and others have held a controversial National Day of Mourning protest on Thanksgiving at Plymouth Rock in Plymouth, Massachusetts. |

The failure of many banks, runs on banks, and a general climate of financial panic played an important role in the Great Depression. After taking office in early March 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt made a radio address (a "Fireside Chat") outlining federal strategy to reopen the banking system. The system had been closed as part of a "bank holiday" declared by president to halt panics and runs. Although many other aspects of New Deal policy often receive more attention, backing up the banking system at least prevented the Depression from worsening. Prevention of financial panics remains an important economic policy in the contemporary world. This is Part 1. |

Located in New York City's East River is Roosevelt Island, previously known as Welfare Island.
The island was home to the city's poorhouse, mental and smallpoz hospitals.
Now it houses those people affluent enough to live in an area contiguous to midtown Manhattan.
This short documentary, filmed in 1966, shows the island as it was. Much of the southern part of the island remains in this terrible condition.
Plans are underway to create a memorial to President Franklin D. Roosevelt on the island.
Rights to the film, and its (excellent condition) original Ektachrome 16mm A&B Rolls are available for sale.

Mike Thomson investigates why so little is known about this biggest ever peacetime threat to American democracy. |

President Gerald Ford: "It is foremost among the nations of the world in the search for peace..and I must say to you that the State of the Union is not good."
My God it's true if it's happening to you
they're sending you far far away
Far from these farms with a truckload of arms
will you return one day?
You say, "I've played follow-the-leader before
but it feels like I'm fightin' this war on my own
I'm bleedin' and bruisin' it looks like I'm losin'
Why did you take me away from my home?"
President George W. Bush: "We will rid the world of the evildoers."
Sheila she said, "My husband is dead
now I don't know what I will do
I've a family to feed and no time to bleed
I wish none of this were true
You see I've had faith in my leaders before
but it feels like I'm mourning this war all alone
I've lost my love who's wonderin' from above
Why did you take me away from my home?"
Excerpt from Adolf Hitler
President Franklin D. Roosevelt: "A date which will live in infamy"
President George W. Bush: "Tonight we are a country awakened to danger and called to defend freedom"
Late at night I can hear the cries
of the innocents dyin' each day
And when a man dies
because another man lies
we wonder why this is the way
Soldier says, "I was just following orders before
now it makes my blood boil and breaks every bone
Will I ever be back with my family?
Why did you take me away from my home?"
President Harry Truman: "We must work to bind up the wounds of a suffering world"
President Franklin D. Roosevelt: "There can be no peace if national policy adopts as a deliberate instrument the threat of war"
President John F. Kennedy: "Mankind must put an end to war or war will put an end to mankind" |

Glimpses of romanticized Americana from yesteryear fade into a series of seemingly patriotic speeches that build with intensity until revealing themselves as moves closer to totalitarianism and away from the America of yore. The video concludes with a passionate speech delivered on May 22, 2007 before the House of Representatives by Ron Paul calling for change and a halt to the erosion of our liberties.
Speech subject matters include:
Franklin D. Roosevelt - Government assistance to private corporations.
Harry Truman - US intervention abroad. US tax dollars for nation building. Instability abroad being a direct threat to the US.
Lyndon B. Johnson - Daisy Ad - Fear as a tool for the public acceptance of a growing government presence.
Richard Nixon - Betrayal by elected officials. Corruption.
Vietnam War - Country at war often implements policies at odds to Freedom and Liberty.
George W. Bush - Similar to Vietnam theme. Failure to accept sacrifices of liberty = danger to one's life.

Paul Craig Roberts discussed Bush's strategy of false flag terrorism In his weekly syndicated column , Roberts suggests that unfolding events and the nature of the rhetoric emanating from government quarters suggests that a major staged terror attack could be just around the corner.
A Wake-up Call
By Paul Craig Roberts
07/19/07 "ICH" -- -- This is a wake-up call that we are about to have another 9/11-WMD experience.
The wake-up call is unlikely to be effective, because the American attitude toward government changed fundamentally seventy-odd years ago. Prior to the 1930s, Americans were suspicious of government, but with the arrival of the Great Depression, Tojo, and Hitler, President Franklin D. Roosevelt convinced Americans that government existed to protect them from rapacious private interests and foreign threats. Today, Americans are more likely to give the benefit of the doubt to government than they are to family members, friends, and those who would warn them about the government's protection.
Chertoff is not a person who wants to be known as Chicken Little for telling us that the sky is falling.
Bush has the Republican Party in such a mess that it cannot survive without another 9/11. Whether authentic or orchestrated, an attack will activate Bush's new executive orders, which create a dictatorial police state in event of "national emergency." [

The United States Air Force (USAF) is the aerial-warfare branch of the United States armed forces and one of the seven uniformed services. Previously part of the United States Army, the USAF was formed as a separate branch of the military on September 18, 1947. The United States Air Force became a separate military service on September 18, 1947, with the implementation of the National Security Act of 1947. The Act created the United States Department of Defense, which was composed of three branches, the Army, Navy and a newly created Air Force.Prior to 1947, the responsibility for military aviation was divided between the Army (for land-based operations) and the Navy, for sea-based operations from aircraft carrier and amphibious aircraft. The Army created the first antecedent of the Air Force in 1907, which through a succession of changes of organization, titles, and missions advanced toward eventual separation 40 years later. The Air Force came of age in World War II. President Franklin D. Roosevelt took the lead, calling for a vastly enlarged air force based on long-range strategic bombing. Organizationally it became largely independent in 1941, when the Army Air Corps became a part of the new U.S. Army Air Forces (USAAF), and the GHQ Air Force was redesignated the subordinate Combat Command. In the major reorganization of the Army by War Department Circular 59, effective March 9, 1942, the newly created United States Army Air Forces gained equal voice with the Army and Navy on the Joint Chiefs of Staff and complete autonomy from the Army Ground Forces and the Services of Supply. In the Pacific Theater of Operations, the USAAF provided major tactical support under General George Kenney to Douglas MacArthur in the Southwest Pacific theater. Kenney's pilots invented the skip-bombing technique against Japanese ships. Kenney's forces claimed destruction of 11,900 Japanese planes and 1.7 million tons of shipping. |
