Ringling Bros. Circus, HORRIFIC animal abuse elephant and horses death walk continues in city after city, day in and day out. These animals try to get away but the trainers have metal bullhooks in hand (training tool) so the elephants are more afraid of being beaten if they don't obey. A danger to the public if one of these elephants or horses gets scared enough and runs into the streets!
Ringling Bros. Circus forcing endangered Asian elephants, tigers, and horses into New York City for entertainment purposes. Your tax dollars fund the closing of the streets, and police manpower. These animals whose spirits have been broken (by the bullhook), and now are dominated to perform painful tricks that are not natural to them in the wild.
After standing in a train boxcar for hours on end, the elephants who were chained by their legs in the boxcars and the horses are forced to walk through the mid-town tunnel, across a noisy, congested, concrete paved street across 34th St. to Madison Square Garden where the elephants will spend two weeks on a garage floor chained again by the legs, standing on their own urine and feces when they are not performing. The tigers are caged when not performing.

A PETA undercover investigator obtained footage in March 1999 of
vicious elephant beatings at Carson & Barnes Circus. Tim Frisco, the
circus' animal care director and longtime elephant trainer, was caught
on tape violently attacking, shocking with an electric prod, and
screaming and cursing at endangered Asian elephants. Frisco is heard
on the tape instructing other elephant trainers to hurt the elephants
until they scream, "holler," and run away; to use both hands to beat
the elephants with a bullhook; and to sink the bullhook's metal spike
into their flesh and twist it back and forth until they scream in
pain.
Says Frisco on the tape, "Sink that hook into 'em ... when you hear
that screaming then you know you got their attention. ... Right here
in the barn. You can't do it on the road. ... I'm not gonna touch her
in front of a thousand people. ... She's gonna fucking do what I want
and that's just fucking the way it is." Frisco can also be heard
shouting, "I am the boss, I will kick your fucking ass," with regard
to the elephants.
Frisco is "still employed by Carson & Barnes."
Footage of Tim Frisco's abusive training session can be viewed on
PETA's web site Circuses.com.
Sadly though, elephants are typically broken and made to fear their
handlers by means of force. Ray Ryan, who worked with elephants at the
San Diego Wild Animal Park, is now convinced that most elephant
trainers use punishment to dominate elephants.
In his book, Keepers of the Ark: An Elephant's View of Captivity, Ryan
describes the attitude that persists among most elephant keepers: "How
dare the elephants fight back when we ask them to do a certain
behavior? They're on this planet to serve us in any way we see fit,
and if any one of them chooses to do otherwise, he or she will pay the
price."
Bullhooks are routinely used by elephant trainers because, according
to Veterinarian Sara Winikoff and other elephant experts, an elephant
will not voluntarily perform difficult, physically strenuous and
painful maneuvers many times a day on command. "No form of positive
reinforcement alone will elicit these unnatural behaviors," says
Winikoff.
Jane Garrison, PETA's elephant specialist, agrees. As Garrison told
the Today show host Katie Couric, when she appeared with Pacelle to
discuss Ringling's treatment of animals, it's ridiculous to think that
circuses are training animals with positive reinforcement. "If that
were the case," said Garrison, "the trainers would be carrying a bag
of food treats, not a bullhook..."
In addition to Tim Frisco's violent beatings, PETA's investigator also
videotaped a handler at Carson & Barnes Circus using a blowtorch on an
elephant's skin to remove hair, and chained elephants and caged bears
rocking and swinging their heads endlessly--the extreme stereotypic
behavior caused by mental distress. |

An exhibition by headline-grabbing UK artist Banksy has been criticised for including a live painted elephant.
The animal, called Tai, was covered in pink and gold paint and placed in a mocked-up house to represent how world poverty is widely ignored.
Officials from the Los Angeles Animal Services Department told the Associated Press they would never again issue permits for such a "frivolous" purpose.
The elephant's owner said the dye was non-toxic and welfare was paramount.
Ed Boks, head of Animal Services in Los Angeles, said: "I think it sends a very wrong message that abusing animals is not only OK, it's an art form.
"We find it no longer acceptable to dye baby chicks at Easter, but it's OK to dye an elephant."
Secret identity
Mr Boks said he tried to withdraw permits for the elephant on grounds of public safety last Friday, but found the three-day exhibition would be over before they took effect.
"Permits will not be issued for such frivolous abuse of animals in the future," he said.
Tai's owner, Kari Johnson, denied that the 38-year-old Indian elephant had suffered as a result of the paint job.
She said: "Tai has done many, many movies. She's used to make-up."
The British graffiti artist's Barely Legal exhibition, which took place in a warehouse in downtown Los Angeles, finished on Sunday.
The artist was not available to discuss the California show, which focused on global poverty and injustice.

According to accounts by several former Ringling Bros. employees and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), elephants who perform in Ringling Bros. circuses are routinely kept in chains for as long as 23 hours a day from the time they are babies-and are repeatedly beaten with sharp bullhooks. Documentation from a USDA investigation found that Ringling Bros. inflicted large wounds on baby elephants during a process in which the animals, less than two years old, were forcibly removed from their mothers. In the wild, baby elephants are not weaned until they are about four years old. Females stay with their mothers and the rest of their social units for their entire lives.
Please boycott circuses that use animals and encourage friends and family to do the same.
