Donald has an unpleasant evening when a mysterious book salesman comes to his door then disappears leaving Donald with a collection of whodunnit novels. He reads one and gets so fully involved in it that it appears that the characters are actually coming out of the book and into his living room getting him involved in the murder caper. Finally the author of the book, J. Harold King, steps forth and claims Donald innocent. The characters return to the novel from whence they came leaving Donald wondering if it was really just his "imagination". |

The Spirit of '43 is a World War II propaganda cartoon created by Walt Disney Studios in 1943 and starring Donald Duck. It is a sequel to The New Spirit. Arguably, it contains the first appearance of the character of Scrooge McDuck, although Scrooge is not named in the film.
In the cartoon, Donald Duck is portrayed as an ordinary American who gets his pay at the factory each week, and is reminded that in order to support the war effort against the Axis powers, he needs to remember to pay his income tax every quarter (in the 1940s, income taxes were paid directly by workers every three months, and not directly removed from employee paychecks as is done today). The purpose of the film was to encourage patriotic Americans to file and pay their income taxes faithfully every 3 months, in order to help the war effort. At one point, Donald Duck is faced with the classic "good angel on one shoulder, bad devil on the other shoulder" dilemma that was so common in cartoons of that era. The bad side is a zoot suit wearing hipster duck who urges Donald to spend his money at a tavern. The good side is represented by the "thrifty saver," who appears as a slightly elderly duck with a Scottish accent and wearing a kilt and Scottish cap and urging him to be thrifty and save so he can make sure to pay his taxes.

Blame It on the Samba is a segment mixing animation and live action, a technical feat already seen in The Three Caballeros, where Aurora Miranda flirts and dances with Donald Duck and Zé Carioca (Joe Carioca) in the Bahian segment. In the new film, the cartoon characters are again avians, this time a trio: Donald, Zé, and the Aracuan (aracuã). The latter figure, a well-intentioned but crazy bird also called Clown of the Jungle, first appeared in The Three Caballeros. He's based on the aracuã, a bird common throughout Brazil. Flocks of aracuãs perch on trees, creating a tremendous racket at dawn and dusk, which is probably the reason for the bird's reputation for naughtiness. The song accompanying the segment is none other than Ernesto Nazareth's celebrated polka "Apanhei-te, Cavaquinho," fitted for the occasion with hackneyed English lyrics. This amazing Disney classic features Donald Duck visiting Copacabana Beach, in Brazil, along with his friend "Joe Carioca" (José Carioca / Zé Carioca -- in Portuguese) who is a Brazilian character created by Walt Disney. José Carioca is a Disney cartoon character drawn as an anthropomorphized parrot from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (thus "Carioca", a term which refers to a person born there).
The creation of a Brazilian animated character during the Second World War was part of a strategy called "Good Neighbor Policy" headed by the United States government to improve relations and gather support amongst its neighbor countries. It's worth seeing Donald having some fun in Brazil, anyway... Enjoy
