Coral Bleaching
Time :
2 : 20
This video is part of a story at http://climateXchange.aspacnet.org/story_64.html Corals get up to 90% of their energy supply from the zooxanthellae that live within them. Stressful conditions (including high water temperature) cause the corals to expel their zooxanthellae. Bleached corals begin to starve once they bleach. The Great Barrier Reef has been affected by mass bleaching events. Widespread bleaching occurred in 1998 and again in 2002. In both of these years, bleaching was recorded on 50-60 per cent of reefs. More recently in the summer of 2006, reefs in the southern part of the Great Barrier Reef were affected by bleaching. Unusually high sea temperatures around inshore reefs caused 40% of corals to die at these reefs. We can all make a difference to the health of the reef by minimising our contributions to climate change by reducing our greenhouse gas emissions.

In Pemuteran,Bali, scientists, conservationists, hotels, dive shops, fishermen, and villages have gotten together to build coral nurseries on which corals grow faster than normal, and around which fish school. To repopulate the area as quickly as possible with coral and fish, coral nurseries were built using the Electrolytic Mineral Accretion Technology (BiorockTM) of Hilbertz and Goreau. It is an outstanding effort to save corals from manmade destruction by bombs, cyanide fishing and global warming.

Ocean Vision - Devastation of Elk Horn Coral
Time :
4 : 1
Elk Horn Coral is being decimated throughout the Caribbean at an alarming rate. The loss of this magnificent coral is equivalent to the loss of all the redwoods in Sequoia National Park. This documented depletion of coral is a result of a freighting and highly contagious reef coral disease known as white pox, caused by a bacteria found in sewage spilloff. The situation is critical because Elk Horn coral is one of the two most important reef corals in the western hemisphere, and its loss would mean disaster for the thousand of fish and invertebrates that call it home. Ocean Vision takes a look at this highly destructive disease and what is being done to combat it. For More Information...

The Value of Coral
Time :
5 : 15
"Sadly, coral does not have the same value as diamonds; actually the coral does not have a lot of value at all". Coral grows, you can cultivate it and just like a diamond, it's rare. One percent of the world oceans is covered by reef, reef is considered endangered but still not valuable. 99% of Bonaire's shoreline is covered by Coral. Coral reefs are the largest structures created by any group of animals in the world. If our shorelines where made out of gemstone, then there would be an army of police force protecting these corals to make sure nobody would ever touch or takes any species. Nobody would be allowed to disturb its health or it's growth. Bonaire then would be the safest place on earth. But still it seem that our reef and reef fish does not have that kind of value. Divers are braking and touching the coral to get the picture of a sea horse, shore lines are being excavated to build villas nobody can effort, cruise ships and airplanes are dumping their waste water. The funny thing about all this protection: we actually don't need permission to protect the coral. We don't need to wait for the government to send out a Zero tolerance policy. We don't need the permission of the marine park before starting protecting the coral and give it his value it so much deserves. We can start now,"don't touch, don't brake, you can only take pictures and leave footprints" If you see something, say something
309. Coral [School Song of Coral Sec School] - (Original)
Time :
1 : 57
When I was teaching in Singapore, at Chestnut Drive SS, my principal, whom I had the pleasure of working with for five years, was appointed to be the first principal of a new school, by the name of Coral Secondary School. She invited me to write the school song for her, providing me with a few notes on the possible symbolism of the colours and growth patterns of coral. I added some of my own ideas, particularly the emphasis on cooperation in this very competitive society. The result was something rather different from the songs I usually write, and, I hope, a bit different from the usual school songs about striving for excellence, etc. Lyrics: Just as tiny grains of coral Grow to mighty coral reefs Let us join with one another To stand up for our beliefs Like a wave that's rolling forward To the distant shining shore We prepare to meet our future, Finding joy in learning more. ...We are Coral ...Yes, we're Coral ...Coral is our school ...We are Coral ...Yes, we're Coral ...Coral is our school Red for warm and loving hearts And white for purity, Like the corals in the ocean We unite in harmony. With the many schools of Singapore We'll build a firm foundation To make this island home of ours A greater, stronger nation.

Japan strives to protect shelf of coral in Okinawa. ISHIGAKIJIMA ISLAND, Okinawa Prefecture--With 2008 designated as the year to protect the world's coral reefs, researchers say their efforts to preserve a spectacular natural formation here are steadily yielding fruit. The Sekisei Lagoon, one of the nation's largest coral reefs, spans about 15 kilometers north-south and about 20 km east-west, between Ishigakijima and Iriomotejima islands. It is the centerpiece of a government rejuvenation project. The reef, located south of Okinawa's main island, is believed to be the main source of larvae coral for reefs in other locations around Japan. Larvae that hatch in the reef drift north on the Kuroshio (black) current to waters around Okinawa's main island and those around Honshu. In one initiative led by the Environment Ministry, young coral heads were transplanted into the bed of the lagoon, off Kuroshima island, in February 2006. Underwater monitoring in June found the coral heads were steadily growing, giving some cause for hope. The coral had grown to more than 10 centimeters in diameter. In 1997 and 1998, the rise in seawater temperatures caused widespread bleaching of coral around the globe. In Okinawa, flooding caused large amounts of red soil to be deposited onto the seabed--causing more damage. The red soil covered areas where the coral larvae implant naturally, making it difficult for new coral to be produced. Under the government project, about 240,000 small ceramic implantation modules, used to anchor the coral, have been placed in the Sekisei Lagoon over the past several years. So far, about 6,000 of the modules, on which coral has successfully been implanted, have been removed and transplanted to other parts of the reef, around Kuroshima island, for example. Mineo Okamoto, associate professor of ocean instrumentation at the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, is pleased with the progress so far. "If nothing was done, the coral on the southern side of the Sekisei Lagoon could have been devastated," said Okamoto, who is cooperating with researchers in the government project. "The results have given us hope." In June, Akiyuki Irikawa, 36, who has been calling for help in the fight to save Okinawa's coral through television and other media, started doing health checks of coral reefs around Japan. He, together with local divers, will visit 27 areas, from Okinawa Prefecture's Kerama and Yaeyama islands up to Chiba Prefecture. Separately, a local group will start researching what effects the vast forests on Ishigakijima island have had on nearby reefs. The project, to be conducted in waters near the island's Yonehara district, will receive financial support from the World Wide Fund for Nature. The event will be followed by the release of a UNEP-supported study which documents corals that have been destroyed or damaged by trawling practices. Okinawa is Japan's southernmost prefecture, consisting of a few dozen, small islands in the southern half of the Nansei Shoto, the island chain which stretches over about one thousand kilometers from Kyushu to Taiwan. Okinawa Prefecture can be divided into three major island groups, the Okinawa Islands (Okinawa Shoto) around Okinawa Island (Okinawa Honto), the Miyako Islands (Miyako Retto) around Miyako Island and the Yaeyama Islands (Yaeyama Retto) around Ishigaki Island.

Cape Coral Tornado, September 16, 2007, 6:39 p.m. ET

I took this video on my cell phone after I and a friend observed the newly-formed tornado approaching the campus of our church and school from just south of Mohawk Parkway and just east of Skyline Boulevard in Cape Coral. At about 6:30 p.m. it was simply a mass of swirling debris with no obvious funnel cloud. The funnel seems to have formed several minutes later when I began taking the video. The storm seems to have destroyed more than one neighborhood electrical transformer. Power had been blinking on and off both before and after the twister, but it finally went down completely at 7:10 p.m. and stayed off for about a couple of hours.

Los jardines de gorgonias son hábitats creados por especies de antozoos octocorolarios que se dan en concentraciones importantes en fondos infralitorales, circalitorales y de aguas profundas.

Secrets of Coral Castle Pt.4
Time :
10 : 5
Investigative journalist Joe Bullard returned to discuss the mysteries surrounding Florida's Coral Castle and its creator Ed Leedskalnin. The Castle and its gardens feature thousands of tons of coral rock that Leedskalnin, a frail man who weighed just 100 pounds, carved into artistic yet functional objects such as tables and chairs, a sundial and a huge perfectly balanced gate. While he made and moved these objects in secret, he claimed he used the same technology that the Egyptians built the pyramids with. Leedskalnin said he built Coral Castle for his lost love Agnes who jilted him back in Latvia, but Bullard suggested that this tale might have been a cleverly disguised cover story for hiding his secret knowledge and scientific achievements. When Leedskalnin was in a hospital in 1951, shortly before his death, thieves stole some of his tools. Bullard believes this might have been a planned confiscation. Leedskalnin left a message over his bedroom at the site: THE SECRET OF THE UNIVERSE IS 7129/6105195. One caller said that was the number from Leedskalnin's federal application for citizenship; another caller related the number to the "golden ratio." Bullard's book Waiting for Agnes, a fictionalized account of the Coral Castle story, incorporates the lore of Atlantis and the Bermuda Triangle into the plot. Joe Bullard was born in Florida in 1951. He attended the University of West Florida and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Journalism in 1974. He found out about the Coral Castle on the television series called "In Search Of" in September of 1984. During this time he was working at Lake City Community College as Public Information Director and Professor of a newspaper class. Joe spent 10 years of research at Coral Castle and started writing "Waiting for Agnes" in February of 1995. It took him five years to get the story on paper and almost four years to publish it. Joe Bullard Pt.1
Time :
10 : 7
Researcher and investigator Joe Bullard returned for a discussion on anomalies of the Bermuda Triangle, and an update on mysterious Coral Castle and its creator Edward Leedskalnin. The anomalous 'Triangle' typically thought to be bound by the coasts of Florida, Puerto Rico and Bermuda, may actually extend up further along the Atlantic, he noted. Some 1,000 planes and ships have disappeared in the region in the last 25 years. Bullard recounted a number of cases, going all the way back to 1492. Columbus wrote in his log book of a "flickering candle" that circled his ship. The UFO came straight down and smashed into the ocean and then was observed circling their ship from underwater. In 1970, Bruce Gernor was flying a small plane near Andros Island and became engulfed in a bizarre cloud. When he came out of the cloud, he was over Miami-- having made a 30 minute flight in 3 just minutes. Some type of time warp appeared to have taken place, said Bullard, who added that he believes there's an underwater UFO base between Florida and Bermuda. In the third hour, he reviewed the history of Coral Castle. Located in Homestead, Florida, the castle and its gardens feature thousands of tons of coral rock that Leedskalnin, a frail man who weighed just 100 pounds, carved into artistic yet functional objects. It's possible that Leedskalnin secretly harbored the ability to levitate the large stones, he commented. Bullard said he'd spoken to a woman whose father had been one of the teens who'd claimed to have seen Leedskalnin float the stones.
