This is a special attraction you can go to at the San Diego Wild Animal Park. It is really awesome to actually be that close to a cheetah and see how fast they really can go. Sorry for the camera being shaky I had never used this camera before and didn't realize I couldn't adjust the zoom while in video mode.

I was both filming and trying to take pictures, so that is why it cuts out at times. 3 cheetah had taken down their kill on the Mara and were eating it as quickly as Hyena came in slowly to make sure there weren't lion around. As soon as they saw it was cheetah eating, in they came. Wildlife works in amazing ways. My goal in life is to get people interested in animal conservation. *ENDANGERED SPECIES* Long and lanky, cheetahs are the sprinters of the cat world. Their bodies are uniquely designed to run very fast for fairly short distances, allowing them to catch prey that other big cats can't get. The cheetahs' ability to run starts with their flexible spine, which allows their front legs to stretch far forward on each stride. While running, they cover 20 to 22 feet (6 to 6.7 meters) in one stride, about the same distance as a racehorse. But cheetahs are so much faster—the fastest racehorse runs 43 miles per hour (69 kilometers per hour), while cheetahs can run at speeds of up to 70 miles per hour (112 kilometers per hour). Cheetahs are off the ground more than half of their running time! Their claws are hard and sharp like cleats, giving them great traction when they run. Cheetahs are solitary and peaceable except at breeding time, when males fight over females and have been known to kill each other. Cheetahs hunt alone and don't have any of the group behaviors that lions do. Cubs live with their mothers for about 18 months. Littermates will stay together for about six to eight more months, sharing a territory. Then the females head off to live on their own, while the males stay together in small groups until they are mature. Cheetahs are endangered for a number of reasons. Genetic problems, leading to severe inbreeding, occurred long before humans began impacting cheetah habitat. Cheetahs hunt by day, which means their daily routine can be affected by tourists taking safari rides into cheetah habitat. Their habitat is open savanna, the most likely areas to be occupied by humans. There are around 12,000 cheetahs left, down from as many as 100,000 just 100 years ago. Ranchers sometimes shoot them because the cats feed on livestock. The Wild Animal Park and the San Diego Zoo's department of Conservation and Research for Endangered Species (CRES) have been working to solve the unique problems that cheetahs have breeding in captivity. This is a video I shot last summer of the "cheetah run" at the San Diego Wild Animal Park. It's not part of the normal zoo tour - They only have it on the weekends and you have to make reservations and buy tickets in advance. It costs about $69 per person, but the experience is absolutely priceless. Very few people ever have the opportunity to see one of these amazing animals running at full speed. You think they look impressive on television? You can't imagine what it's like standing 6-8 feet from the path of a 140+ pound cat running by you at over 60 miles per hour!! If you have the opportunity to make it to the San Diego Zoo, I can't recommend this highly enough. Easily one of the most incredible things I've ever experienced. Also, once the cheetah completes their second run, the trainers bring him over to a shady area to cool down and give you the opportunity to see them up close. They have 2 cheetahs trained to make the run - Majani and his sister, Kubali. Kubali is the faster of the two, but Majani (the cheetah in this video), is larger. As the video notes, Majani is the largest cheetah in any zoo in the world (144 pounds!), and the second-largest cheetah ever recorded.

The international runners were the first visitors to go through the new viewing area and cut the tape at the new exhibit Cheetah Rock. And during the event the audience was serenaded by Someries Junior School from Luton, singing along to the rhythm of African drums. The much-awaited new enclosure, which opens to the public on Good Friday, homes a 5,000-metre landscaped area complete with rock look-out for the cheetahs to roam in. Visitors will get superb close-up views of the fleet-of-foot cheetahs with only floor-to-ceiling glass separating them from the animals. The viewing area is housed in an Africa style hut and the new display also includes a safari Land Rover portraying real life cheetah conservation activities in the African savannah.
