The "philosopher of the militant Islamist movement," Sayyid Qutb, is featured on Christiane Amanpour's God's Warriors (aired August 2007, by CNN). Qutb came to America from Egypt in 1948 to attend college—American culture quickly shocked him. He resented the lack of spiritualism in the U.S. and held disdain for cultural customs that were foreign to his Islamic upbringing. Upon return to Egypt he began preaching about returning Muslim nations to their roots before later being arrested as an extremist, convicted and later executed by the Egyptian government. His vision of an "Islamic awakening" would later be strongly accepted by men such as Usama bin Laden, Ayman al Zawahri and their al Qa'ida brethren. |

Plane crash
There were early rumours that a light aircraft had crashed into the fuel storage tanks at the depot. Some residents reported hearing an aircraft flying overhead shortly before the explosions and Luton airport is nearby. Police later said no plane had been involved in causing the explosion.
Terrorist strike
Militant Islamists were urged last week to attack oil installations in Muslim countries by Ayman al-Zawahiri, al-Qaida's deputy leader. Police would not rule out the blast being a planned act but a terrorist strike was judged highly unlikely by security sources and terrorism experts. There were no suggestions from any of the security services that investigators had evidence pointing to a terrorist act but an information blackout might be a police tactic if detectives did not want to alarm the public. The timing of the explosion led experts to believe it was not a terrorist strike. The fact the first blast happened early on Sunday meant it caused minimum damage

Al-Qaeda is reportedly the strongest it's been since the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. That's according to a U.S. government analysis that says the group has found a safe haven in tribal areas of Pakistan. The news comes as government officials are warning that the U.S. is vulnerable to Al Qaeda despite security changes since September 11. Officials say they see more money, training and communications among the terror group members.
Military action at Islamabad's Red Mosque has ended. Pakistan forces took over the mosque yesterday from radical Islamic students. But there are concerns now whether this would set off reprisals by Islamic militants. Al-Qaeda's second in command, Ayman al-Zawahiri, appeared in a recorded message on web sites requesting the students take revenge against Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf's government. The military says at least 50 militants and nine security guards died in the mosque battle.
A new report out says the Bush Administration sees some satisfactory progress in Iraq. The White House report released today says there's improvement in eight of the eighteen benchmarks set by Congress. The analysis reportedly says that none of the military and political benchmarks have been fully met, and only in some cases there's been movement forward. This report is considered a midterm evaluation. The annual summary is due in September.
Family, friends and admires will have a chance this weekend to bid farewell to Lady Bird Johnson, widow of the late President Lyndon Johnson. The former first lady died yesterday of natural causes. She was 94. A private family service will be held tomorrow morning in Austin. Following that, Johnson's body will lie in repose for public viewing Friday afternoon to Saturday morning. A private funeral will take place later in the day on Saturday. Johnson will be buried in the family cemetery near Stonewall, Texas next to her husband who died in 1973. |

Anyone remember this guy? Yes, was he not supposed to be behind the attacks against the World Trade Center and Pentagon on September 11, 2001? Ah, but you don't hear much about him since the Iraq invasion in 2003. However, he does pop up from time to time as a convenient "boogeyman", when the current admistration is losing support. And now we have this video, alleged to be released - that it marks the 6th anniversary of the infamous attack. This is a screenshot of the yet-to-be-released video that features the old bloke himself. There is no immediate way to confirm when the video, from which this screencap was taken, was made. However, there seems to be a distinct rubble or structure in the bottom right corner of the frame. It appears to possibly be a man-made structure. Now, as for Binny boy himself, if this is indeed meant to be a recent image, doesn't he look awfully healthy and plump for someone who would had to have endured numerous hardships, evading U.S. and other forces intent on his capture? Now, he has that glazed, stoned looked to his eyes, but he always had that. (I think he is a drug addict, and that's why he always had delusions of grandeur.) Now, remember this is a man who allegedly needed a dialysis machine to treat a terminal kidney disease. My grandfather died of a kidney disease, and he lost perhaps 40% of his body weight leading up to his death - and that was in controlled treatment conditions. And this is a man who is allegedly under great stress, on the lamb. I can only find his appearance highly dubious if this is genuinely meant to be a recent image. Now, consider this: The late, great blowhard, Saddam Hussein, who, based on all known facts, had zero to do with the September 11 attack, was captured within nine months of the Iraq invasion. Yet this 6'6" alleged mastermind of the worst terrorist attack in American history, has somehow evaded capture for the last six years. Do you not find it curious that, anyone with an internet connection can use Google Maps and pinpoint their house - I've done it myself, and I'm sure many of you have done it, as well - yet, the military and pantheon of intelligence agencies, with their infinite resources and state-of-the-art, bleeding-edge technology, are unable, after six years, to so much as draw a bead on this guy? The last I remember, is sometime in late November/early December of 2001, American forces had him supposedly holed up in Tora Bora, and we really haven't heard anything but hearsay about him since. The last video in which he appeared, was in October 2004 - interestingly just prior to the last presidential election. And now, with you-know-who's approval ratings at all-time lows, and an increasingly unpopular American presence in Iraq, the timing is interesting. It reminds me of the classic boogeyman stories parents tell children to scare them into being obedient. But the rest of the time, they just want them to believe its make-believe. I would not be surprised for an instant if bin Laden is already dead - in fact, long dead - and that his supervillain icon is being exploited when it comes in handy. I'm not saying this is the case, but I think it is a viable theory. At any rate, there is no good reason why he is not in a prison, or a piece of carrion rotting beneath the earth by now. The American forces are either inept, indifferent, or he is already dead. And just what about his #1 lackey, Ayman al-Zawahri? Come on, a supervillain's henchman is always a pushover.

One could think that Trace Adkins wrote the song "Welcome To Hell" for me. I hope he won't mind me quoting him here and playing his AWESOME song (You gonna love it). You are welcome to come in; but think twice if you can stand to burn 'til the end of time.
