Celebrities call to free Rhanee, the Asian elephant
Time :
4 : 29
Celebrities call for the freeing of Rhanee, the elephant, from the Valwo Zoo in Spain. Rhanee is alone again in her small enclosure, after the death of her companion Costa. Rhanee caught the public attention after she was shown on video being beaten at Mary Chipperfield Promotions. Her keeper was jailed for cruelty, and two directors of Mary Chipperfield Promotions, Mary Chipperfield Cawley and Roger Cawley, were convicted and fined for cruelty to other animals. The charges were brought by ADI after we collected devastating video evidence during an undercover investigation. However it seemed that there was to be no justice for Rhanee when MCP closed down, she disappeared without trace. Having scoured Europe, ADI discovered Rhanee over a year later, alone, in a small barren enclosure at Valwo Zoo in north central Spain. An international campaign was launched to appeal for Rhanee to be retired to a sanctuary which specialises in the care of abused elephants; the campaign was backed by Sir Paul McCartney, Brian Blessed, Jay Kay of Jamiroqui and many more. However, the zoo's owner, the huge entertainment group Parques Reunidos, refused all approaches, but as the media pressure mounted, a series of improvements were made to Rhanee's enclosure: a small shelter was added, a small pool dug and filled with water, a companion was introduced, a female elephant called Costa. ADI believe that the addition of Costa was the biggest single improvement to the quality of Rhanee's life. The pair appeared to get on well, they would move around together, and touch each other frequently. We noted a reduction in Rhanee's stereotypic behaviours. Tragically, however, a check-up visit in April this year brought very disturbing news Costa was extremely sick. She was skin and bone, her legs were constantly buckled, so that her rump was almost touching the ground; she had a problem with her trunk, and was unable to drink properly; she had extreme difficulty walking. ADI immediately contacted Parques Reunidos asking what action they were taking to help Costa. We offered any assistance to help alleviate her suffering. We received no reply. Costa died in May. In July, a further visit to Valwo Zoo confirmed that Rhanee was once again alone. It seems that Rhanee, more than ever, symbolises the misery heaped upon captive elephants. Will she ever get any justice? ADI have again written to Parques Reunidos, offering to relocate Rhanee to a specialist sanctuary. Let's hope they have finally given up on any hope of breeding from this sad, lonely, damaged elephant. Write to: Consejo de Administracion de Parques Reunidos, Parques Zoologica, Oficinas Centrales, Casa de Campo S/N 28011 MADRID, Spain.

Asian Elephants are smaller than African elephants. There are other differences between Asian elephants and African elephants, too. Asian elephants have smaller ears, a different number of toes, the ends of their trunks are different, where they live is different. Only male Asian elephants have tusks unlike African elephants that both the males and the females have tusks. Two things that both kinds of elephants have in common is loss of habitat and being poached for their ivory tusks. Schoolgirl Teen Girl Young Lady Thai Teenager Play Elephants

Happy Valentine's Day from Miss Tawanchai Srinawong a Thai teen girl young lady a teenager schoolgirl playing with Asian elephants in Chiang Mai Thailand. More at http://picasaweb.google.com/krokosk/ Valentine's Day is a holiday celebrated on February 14. In North America, it is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other by sending Valentine's cards, presenting flowers or offering confectionery. The holiday is named after two among the numerous Early Christian martyrs named Valentine. The day became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. Asian Elephant sometimes known by the name of one of its subspecies (the Indian Elephant), is one of the three living species of elephant. The species is found primarily in large parts of Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Indochina and parts of Indonesia. It is considered endangered, with between 25,600 and 32,750 left in the wild. It is smaller than its African relatives; the easiest way to distinguish the two is that the Asian elephant has smaller ears. The Asian Elephant tends to grow to around two to four meters (7--12 feet) in height and 3,000--5,000 kilograms (6,500--11,000 pounds) in weight. The Asian Elephant has other differences from its African relatives, including a more arched back than the African, one semi-prehensile "finger" at the tip of its trunk as opposed to two, four nails on each hind foot instead of three, and 19 pairs of ribs instead of 21. Also, unlike with the African elephant, the female Asian Elephant usually lacks tusks; if tusks — in that case called "tushes" — are present, they are barely visible, and only seen when the female opens her mouth. Some males may also lack tusks; these individuals are called "makhnas", and are especially common among the Sri Lankan elephant population. Furthermore, the forehead has two hemispherical bulges, unlike the flat front of the African elephant. This animal is widely domesticated, and has been used in forestry in South and Southeast Asia for centuries and also in ceremonial purposes. Historical sources indicate that they were sometimes used during the harvest season primarily for milling. Wild elephants attract tourist money to the areas where they can most readily be seen, but damage crops, and may enter villages to raid gardens. The Kingdom of Thailand is a country in Southeast Asia. To its east lie Laos and Cambodia; to its south, the Gulf of Thailand and Malaysia; and to its west, the Andaman Sea and Myanmar. Its capital and largest city is Bangkok.

Asian Elephant Scientific name: Elephas maximus In the wild: Endangered species Jerusalem zoo: The Asian elephant's distribution is from Western India to Eastern Indonesia. The Indian sub-species, which is exhibited here, prefers partial or fully forested areas. An elephant spends three-quarters of its life eating. It needs 75-115 kilos of food per day and about 80-160 liters of water. They eat mainly grass, leaves, bark and soft branches. The family groups consist of females and young calves led by an elder matriarch. Herds consist of 5 to 120 individuals. The males usually live alone or in small bachelor herds. Usually they are with the maternal families only during musth. The elephant is the largest land mammal, weighing between 2000-5000 kg, the elephant can grow as tall as 3.5 meters. Every so often, the males excrete a liquid from glands above their eyes, show unpredictable, usually aggressive behavior, and drip urine. This is called "musth" and is probably sexual in nature, as it occurs only in mature bulls. "Moreover the king made a great throne of ivory and overlaid it with pure gold" Chronicles 2: 9, 17 Elephant husbandry methods in Zoos There are different methods of husbandry of the Asian Elephants in zoo around the world and at the different elephant conservation centers. Direct contact - No separation between elephants and keepers. This method has great advantages for elephant welfare, but, because of the proximity of the large elephants to the keepers, the risks to the keepers are relatively high. Protected contact - All work with the elephants is done from behind bars. This method keeps the keepers better protected, but work with elephants is more limited. No contact - No contact between elephants and keepers. This method offers maximum safety to the keepers and is cheaper to implement, but it compromises elephant welfare. Most check-ups and treatments need to be conducted under anesthesia, which is extremely risky. Here in Jerusalem zoo they work with direct contact method

We don't normally get this lucky when we visit the elephants at Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. They must've been enjoying the nice, sunny weather just like the rest of us! Two of them came right up to the fence where we were watching and started showing off. We were probably about 10 feet away from them! They were tossing dirt up on their backs and playing with a rubber ball. It's too bad we didn't get more of that on camera. =)
