The American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) is one of the two living species of Alligator, a genus within the family Alligatoridae. The American Alligator is native only to the southeastern United States, where it inhabits wetlands that frequently overlap with human-populated areas. It is larger than the other Alligator species, the Chinese Alligator.
Anatomy
The American Alligator has a large, slightly rounded body, with thick limbs, a broad head, and a very powerful tail. Males can weigh 500 lbs to over 1000 pounds. One American Alligator allegedly reached a length of 19 feet, 2 inches (5.8 meters),[1] which would make it the largest recorded. 13 to 14.5 feet (3.94 to 4.39 meters) is a more common adult size.[2] The tail, which accounts for half of the alligator's total length, is primarily used for aquatic propulsion. The tail can also be used as a weapon of defense when an alligator feels threatened. Alligators travel very quickly in water, are generally slow-moving on land and can lunge short distances very quickly. They have five toes in front and four in back.
Habitat
Today, alligators are found throughout the Southeast, from Merchants Millpond State Park in North Carolina to Texas and south to southeastern Oklahoma.
As during the Reptile Age, alligators live in wetlands, and it is this vital habitat that holds the key to their continued long-term survival. Alligators depend on the wetlands, and in some ways the wetlands depend on them. As predators at the top of the food chain, they help control the population of rodents and other animals that might overtax the marshland vegetation.
Diet
Alligators eat almost anything, but primarily consume fish, birds, turtles, mammals and amphibians. Hatchlings however are restricted to smaller prey items like invertebrates. Insects and larvae, snails, spiders and worms make-up a big portion of a hatchling's diet. They will also eat small fish at any opportunity. As they grow, they gradually move onto larger fish, mollusks, frogs and small mammals like rats and mice. Sub adult alligators take a larger variety of prey; ranging from snakes and turtles to birds and moderate sized mammals like raccoons and pets.
Once an alligator reaches adulthood, any animal living in the water or coming to water to drink is potential prey. Adult alligators will eat razorbacks, deer, domestic animals including cattle and sheep, and are often known to kill and eat smaller alligators. Larger male alligators have been known to take down Florida panther and bears, making the American alligator the apex predator throughout its distribution.
The stomachs of alligators often contain gastroliths. The function of these stones is to grind up food in the stomach and help with digestion. This is important because gators swallow their food whole. These gastroliths are also used in buoyancy control.
Despite the extensiveness of their shared habitat with humans, alligator attacks on humans are comparatively rare. Most alligators fear humans due to hunting; attacks on humans are typically a result of feeding of alligators. Once a human feeds an alligator, it expects food whenever it sees someone.
In 2002, the bite force was measured on a 12 foot alligator and the result was about 2100 pounds of force. |

Here Osceola the 7', 150lb, 15 year old female American Alligator follows one command. She is trained to go forward with gentle pressure on her neck and sides, and to get up out of the pond by tapping the base of her tail, along with my voice commands. This allows me shift her to the other pond in her enclosure and allows me to maintain the water quality and clean in there without having to handle her and drag her out.
This was shot during her feeding time, (she had her rations of cut goat with bone in before I dragged out the camera) and the big stick is a target for her. The tapping I was doing and calling her to come forward is how I get her into the "zone" to feed her. You can see her go through the motions of "eating" the food that was supposed to be at the end of that stick in her mind! (don't worry, as you can see from her belly, she has had plenty to eat!) - sorry for qality, I know I need a new and better camera! |

This is the A. alligator that everybody was compling about (in regards to its enclosure). The 'gator was first obtained on short notice from a guy that was keeping it in a bath tub. I had (for a short time) kept him in a small kids swimming pool until I could pick up the stock tank. This is the enclosure he currently lives in and I'm still in progress of building something long term. The cameras battery died on me while I was recoding; thus the reason it stopped recording in the middle of a sentence. |

Everglades National Park is a national park in the state of Florida. The largest subtropical wilderness in the United States, it contains the southern 25 percent of the original Everglades marshland region of southwestern Florida.
Unlike most other U.S. national parks, Everglades National Park was created to protect a fragile ecosystem instead of safeguarding a geographic feature. Thirty-six species designated as threatened or protected live in the park, including the Florida panther, the American crocodile, and the West Indian manatee. Protecting the largest U.S. wilderness area east of the Mississippi River, the park is the most significant breeding ground for tropical wading birds in North America, and contains the largest mangrove ecosystem in the western hemisphere. More than 350 species of birds, 300 species of fresh and saltwater fish, 40 species of mammals, and 50 species of reptiles live within Everglades National Park. All of southern Florida's fresh water is recharged by the park, including that of the Biscayne Aquifer.
Crocodiles coexist with alligators in Everglades National Park, the only place in the world where they do so naturally. An alligator is a crocodilian in the genus Alligator of the family Alligatoridae. The name alligator is an anglicized form of the Spanish el lagarto ("the lizard"), the name by which early Spanish explorers and settlers in Florida called the alligator. There are two living alligator species: the American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) and the Chinese Alligator (Alligator sinensis).

A legal, alligator hunt in S.E. Georgia. This alligator was taken under the strict guidelines of the Georgia DNR. I attended the GA DNR class for permit holders. The hide was inspected by the GA DNR and then sold to a tannery while meat of the alligator was harvested too. Good hunters respect their quarry and cherish the outdoors and environment.
You'll see that we did not hunt the gator just for the hell of it. Large gators are really only good to brag about. I took a gator whereupon all of the gator could be used. Also, according to the GA DNR, only 25% of the permit holders, there are 3000, actually bag a gator. I used as much of the gator as possible and not just to shoot one and brag about it.
I am very conservation minded and am a board member of the Coastal Conservation Association of Georgia. Unfortunately, there is not as much habitat as there was a million years ago. When an ecosystem cannot support large numbers of alligators, the whole ecosystem suffers. Animals are eaten at greater numbers and even more gators starve or get sick.
The state of Georgia is set up into zones and permits handed out per zone based on the number of gators that should be taken in that habitat area to keep a balance in the ecosystem. Remember, in these habitats the alligator is the top predator with no natural enemies. Left unchecked they would grow to unsustainable numbers.
This is the best way that we have found to help along the population at managable levels to ensure future generations of the american alligator. |
