ABSTRACT
REST Describe & Compile is an editor and a compiler for REST Web services based on SUN engineer Marc Hadley's Web Application Description Language (WADL). REST Describe & Compile is implemented using the Google Web Toolkit (GWT) and is split up in two sub-apps:
REST Describe:
This component takes a (set of) URL(s) as input and tries to analyze the parameters regarding parameter types and Web service structure. It then generates a WADL representation for the given URL(s), represented in an editable, tree-like form. Typical input would be GET http://webservices.amazon.com/onca/xml?Service=AWSECommerceService=0ZMFM7HPBYYY0SPERCR2=ItemSearch=Enterprise+Integration+Patterns=Books, or GET http://picasaweb.google.com/data/feed/api/user/{userID}/albumid/{albumID}/photoid/{photoID}?kind=kinds=0=10.
REST Compile:
This component allows for the WADL representation of a Web service to be "compiled" to working programming code in various languages (for the moment these languages are Java, PHP5, Python, and Ruby). The idea is thus similar to WSDL2Java, however in a more general WADL2Anything way.

Open Source, Google APIs, Google Web Toolkit
Presented by Lars Rasmussen
Why Google supports and uses open source, why it is good for us, and why you should use it too. Followed by an overview of Google's extensive collection of APIs for use by third party developers including the Google Maps API, the Google AJAX Search API, the Google Gadgets API and much more. This session will then explore the Google Web Toolkit (GWT), a Java-centric framework for creating AJAX applications. GWT cross-compiles Java source into JavaScript, allowing Java developers to use their existing Java skills and tools to easily create AJAX applications with virtually no learning curve. Lars will contrast using the toolkit with his experience 'hand-rolling' the AJAX of Google Maps, and if time allows, demonstrate building a simple application with GWT.
Lars Eilstrup Rasmussen is a member of Google's technical staff and a lead engineer of the team that created Google Maps. He currently works out of Google's young but growing Sydney engineering office and is actively working to expand Google's engineering presence in Australia. Lars holds a Ph.D. in theoretical computer science from the University of California at Berkeley, which nominated his thesis on approximate counting for the ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award. In early 2003, Lars co-founded with his brother Jens Eilstrup Rasmussen a mapping-related startup, Where 2 Technologies, which was acquired by Google in October of 2004. |

Andy Palay has a Bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin and a PhD from Carnegie Mellon University. After finishing his PhD, he remained at CMU as one of the principal architects of the Andrew System. He was ""dragged"" out of beautiful Pittsburgh by Silicon Graphics in the early nineties. He left his position as one of SGI's Chief Scientists in the late nineties to experience life in start-up land. The Google AJAX APIs let you implement rich, dynamic features on your existing web sites entirely in JavaScript and HTML. Using this family of APIs you can add a map to your site, include dynamic search controls, or download and mashup feeds with just a few lines of JavaScript. The APIs that make up this family include the Google Maps API, the Google AJAX Search API, and the Google AJAX Feed API. This talk will focus on the Search and Feed API. The Maps API is covered in the "Developing with Geo" track.
The Google AJAX Search API is designed to allow applications to easily embed Google Search into their applications. The Google AJAX Feed API is our newest AJAX API. It is designed to deliver high fidelity RSS and Atom feeds directly to your site. Aaron Boodman started life as a musician, a mistake he rectified early to the delight of his teachers and dormmates. Suddenly finding himself with more time on his hands, he taught himself to program and began experimenting with and writing about the collection of technologies that became known as "AJAX" many years later. His work from 2000-2001 continues to be referenced and reused today in modern JavaScript toolkits. More recently, he is the creator of Greasemonkey, a popular browser extension that allows people to "mash up" websites using JavaScript. At Google he works on experimental web technology, and occasionally lends a hand on UI for products like Gmail, Reader, and Blogger. |
