This is footage taken from a UGA Study Abroad trip to Kruger National Park in South Africa in June 2007. Taking a rest from our walk, our group was sitting by a spring when a group of elephants walked out in front us. They had young with them and thus were very wary of our presence. After forming a circle formation, the matriarch female of the group then ended up charging towards us. Our guide stepped up to meet off the charge, and thankfully it was effective. Pretty incredible encounter, especially to have on foot.

Video shows a large red-headed African Elephant. A detailed view of the trunk can be seen. The elephant's trunk is strong and powerful. It can lift heavy logs and Indian elephants are used to clear forests. The trunk is also quite delicate and can pick up a piece of straw. The elephant can feel its way around with its trunk. The elephant can also lift its trunk and trumpet. However they seem to have trouble reaching for leaves in high trees. Some elephants use their trucks to draw on the ground and some consider that this may be art. Also shown is a hippopotamus swimming.

This is footage taken from a UGA Study Abroad trip to Kruger National Park in South Africa in June 2007. Our group approached this big bull elephant from a distance. He came closer so we moved back to give him space. After sniffing around, he very unexpectedly charged right at us. Our guide raised his rifle and prepared to fire if needed. At 15 feet away, the elephant suddenly stopped, then turned and walked away. Our guide said in 15 years in the bush this was the closest he had ever come to shooting an animal. It was an amazing show of power from an amazing animal. Overall, a thrilling encounter.

Not an actual charge by the elephant but you can clearly see its protecting the baby and warning the tourists to err...keep their distance. I would have thought it would be a bit risky for the park rangers to get tourists that close to a newly born elephant calf.

Maggie Joins her Group of African Elephants!

On February 13, 2008, Maggie made her first foray into the large African Elephant habitat with her four companions 71, Mara, Lulu and Ruby. Maggie and the others were excited to finally socialize without a barrier, rumbling and trumpeting their greeting in true African elephant style. PAWS' staff will continue this routine daily, gradually increasing the interval to build Maggie's confidence and physical stamina, until she is fully integrated.
