An indelible image of courage, one lone protester facing down a tank in Beijing's Tiananmen Square, June 1989. He would become known simply as 'Tank Man' or 'The Unknown Rebel'. The massive student protests were brutally put down on June 4th when the Chinese army attacked with tanks and trucks, firing indescriminately at the unarmed protesters, killing and injuring thousands. The Unknown Rebel confronted the tank column next day as the army withdrew. Neither his identity nor his fate have ever been established, reported by some to have been executed, and by others to be still alive. This music comes from the CD 'Image Conscious', music loosely hung on enduring news images. Music and video by Plug.
Due to numerous requests this video and the music track (with high quality stereo sound) is available in iPod format for purchase at my online shop at:

On June 5, 1989, one day after the Chinese army's deadly crushing of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests in Beijing, a single, unarmed young man stood his ground before a column of tanks on the Avenue of Eternal Peace. Captured on film and video by Western journalists, this extraordinary confrontation became an icon of the struggle for freedom around the world. |

Tank Man, or the Unknown Rebel, is the nickname of an anonymous man who became internationally famous when he was videotaped and photographed during the Tiananmen Square protests on 5 June 1989. Several photographs were taken of the man, who stood in front of a column of Chinese Type 59 tanks, preventing their advance. The most widely reproduced version of the photograph was taken by Jeff Widener (Associated Press), from the sixth floor of the Beijing Hotel, about half a mile (800 m) away, through a 400 mm lens.
Another version was taken by photographer Stuart Franklin of Magnum Photos. His photograph has a wider field of view than Widener's picture, showing more tanks in front of the man. Franklin subsequently won a World Press Award for the photograph. It was featured in LIFE magazine's "100 Photos that Changed the World" in 2003. Variations of the image were also recorded by CNN and BBC film crews, on videotape, and were transmitted across the world.
The still and motion photography of the man standing alone before a line of tanks reached international audiences practically overnight. It headlined hundreds of major newspapers and news magazines and was the lead story on countless news broadcasts around the world. In April 1998, the United States magazine TIME included the "Unknown Rebel" in its 100 most influential people of the 20th century.
The incident took place just a minute away from Tiananmen on Chang'an Avenue, which leads into the Forbidden City, Beijing, on June 5, 1989, the day after the Chinese government began cracking down violently on the protests. The man stood alone in the middle of the road as the tanks approached. He held two bags, one in each hand. As the tanks came to a stop, he appeared to be trying to wave them away. In response, the front tank attempted to drive around the man, but the man repeatedly stepped into the path of the tank in a show of nonviolent action. By looking at these two photographs and using the painted road lines as a reference, it is evident that the tank has moved forward. After blocking the tanks, the man climbed up onto the top of the lead tank and had a conversation with the driver. Reports of what he said to the driver vary, including "Why are you here? My city is in chaos because of you"; "Go back, turn around, and stop killing my people"; and "Go away." Video footage shows that anxious onlookers then pulled the man away and absorbed him into the crowd and the tanks continued on their way.
Little is publicly known of the man's identity. Shortly after the incident, British tabloid the Sunday Express named him as Wang Weilin, a 19-year-old student; however, the veracity of this claim is dubious. Numerous rumours have sprung up as to the man's identity and current whereabouts, but none are backed by hard evidence.
There are several conflicting stories about what happened to him after the demonstration. In a speech to the President's Club in 1999, Bruce Herschensohn — former deputy special assistant to President of the United States Richard Nixon — reported that he was executed 14 days later; other sources say he was killed by firing squad a few months after the Tiananmen Square protests. In Red China Blues: My Long March from Mao to Now, Jan Wong writes that the man is still alive and is hiding in mainland China.
An eyewitness account of the event published in October 2005 by Charlie Cole, a contract photographer for Newsweek magazine at the time, states that the man was arrested on the spot by the Public Security Bureau.
The People's Republic of China government made few statements about the incident or the person involved. In a 1990 interview with Barbara Walters, then-CCP General Secretary Jiang Zemin was asked what became of the man. Jiang replied "I think never killed."
A June 2006 article in the Hong Kong Apple Daily stated that the man is now residing in Taiwan.

STAR WARS
REBEL DAWN
EPISODE TWO-
SOCIAL NETWORKING
The planet was hotter- no, it was merely more humid. Like a tropical rainforest. In fact, most of the world WAS tropical rainforest. And C3-PO did not like Wayland.
Neither did Major Zell-Kai, ground commander of this expedition. Almost all of the Rebel Army was here for this fight, the enemy strength was unknown, and they had to babysit a couple of droids.
Their mission was to rewrite the rulebook- specificaly, a Galactic Empire Network Hub, to allow the Alliance Fleet to pass through the auto-station scanners without raising alarms. Hackers would probably detect and reverse this quickly, but it was their only shot to even getting to Fresia.
The X-Wings were at hand. |

I thought that this song fit perfectly to the images. If for any reason this combination offends anyone, that was not my intention.
The lone man, referred as the "Unknown Rebel", stood in front of those tanks during the Tiananmen Square tragedy in 1989. His fate remains a mystery.
The song is How Far We've Come by Matchbox Twenty.

75th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, 1938. Footage of Confederate and Union veterans shaking hands over a stone wall. I don't know if this wall contained stones used in a stone wall during the actual battle in 1863, but probably so. It starts with the old veterans shaking hands and calling "Hello Yankee" and "Hello Johnny" and things like that, then one Confederate near the camera takes up the Rebel Yell for a few seconds. Laughter is heard (source unknown, possibly a bystander), then the old old Johnny identifies it: "That's the Rebel Yell!"
One can only imagine the thoughts and memories brought up by that, especially among the Union guys on the other side of the wall! At
http://www.46thmsinf.org/Rebel_Yell.htm
is claimed that a jolt is perceived in the Union vets. |

A series of demonstrations led by labor activists, students, and intellectuals in the People's Republic of China (PRC) between April 15 and June 4, 1989. While the protests lacked a unified cause or leadership, participants were generally against the authoritarianism and economic policies of the ruling Chinese Communist Party and voiced calls for democratic reform within the structure of the government. The demonstrations centered on Tiananmen Square in Beijing, but large-scale protests also occurred in cities throughout China, including Shanghai, which stayed peaceful throughout the protests. In Beijing, the resulting military crackdown on the protesters by the PRC government left many civilians dead or injured. The reported tolls ranged from 200--300 (PRC government figures), to 400--800 (The New York Times), and to 2,000--3,000 (Chinese student associations and Chinese Red Cross). |

The Massacre at Tiananmen Square. The Unknown Rebel, The Tank Man. How easily the International Olympic Committee turns a blind eye to the atrocities committed by Communist China.
The people of Tibet face cultural genocide.
Governmental law continues to support state sponsored infanticide with up to a million baby girls deserted every year. The IOC takes their money and stages the world games, ignoring all of this.
The Children of China.
The people of Tibet.
Ghosts.
Invisible to the world.

Here is a commercial break during Roland Goes East (alas what I uploaded from that programme is all I've got :-( ). It's incomplete, and has a chunk edited out by me because my old VCR (a Nordmende from about 1981, which we bought second-handed in 1984 from a family member) started to accidentally go into "Record" mode in the early 90s. (It lost the capacity to record in 1992.)
But anyway, the ads that have survived are for: unknown toy, Action Force from Ceji Rebel, Astérix from Ceji Rebel (hmmm, I thought Astérix couldn't really beat the Romans that well without the help of Obélix ;-) ), Needler's Fruit Pastilles, Tizer, and the Weetabix Breakfast Box with Captain Sensible (the clip cuts halfway through this ad). |
