When the John Lennon art exhibit came to New York city in Soho New York on 76 Greene st it was one of the most amazing & one of a kind art shows people had ever seen.
The event was held on the weekend of 12/6 - 12/9.
As a reporter I covered the Montclair NJ show in 2004 which was held at the site of former Screening Zone.
It was also the first John Lennon exhibit to be hosted in New Jersey.
When I first walked into the gallery I knew I was looking at one of the greatest art collections in history.
Each time you look at one of John Lennon's works you get into his world and you get the sense of the person he was; his hopes and dreams of peace& love. His drawings about his love with Yoko Ono leave you breathless. Each of his poems tells us a story of a point in time in his life both sad and happy. John Lennon was a natural at exposing his true emotions into his art. He began drawing long before he had a guitar in his hands. He attended the prestigious Liverpool Art Institute for three years (1957-1960) before the Beatles became a full-time occupation. He continued to draw throughout his life. John Lennon's primary medium was line drawing either in pen, pencil, or Japanese sumi ink. His drawings became illustrations for three best selling books that he wrote in the 60's. In addition, a complete suite of the "Bag One" portfolio of lithographs is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His original drawings are also being collected by museums throughout the world. And rightfully so, his evocative abstract line images are comparable to the later works of Picasso in look and feeling. He had achieved something very few artist attain with mere pen and paper, he had a style and a voice. Every drawing John Lennon did no matter how simple, made a powerful statement about his unique vision of life.
Coming back again brought back so many great memories , as I gazed upon the gallery I saw newer and never before seen prints in the collection.
Just remarkable they were.
The exhibit also displayed posters , limited edition prints and timeless yet unseen pictures with Beatle's history which added to the overall excitement could be seen high up on the walls.
This ambitious road show that is now raising money for the Adopt a Class Room program that gives cash from donations to schools under the guidance of Lennon's widow Yoko Ono may be finally getting rooted and finding its legs amid some of the petty controversies and confusion about the artwork reproduction.
To begin with the program is gaining momentum adopting over 5000 classrooms in the U.S. and raising additional money for charities. Many of the donations have been generous. Yoko Ono's labor of love is catching the imagination of a war weary public and the sheer power of John Lennon's creative persona is being rediscovered by an impressed generation of young students. You could not help but notice the huge banner when you enter the gallery that reads the prophetic words of John Lennon: 'War is Over' in giant letters and the caption 'If you want it' below it. And then the artwork and poems and writing of John Lennon almost leaping off the walls bringing his spirit back to life with an almost vengeance. It was clear the victory here was not merely charities or collector lithographs but the resurrection of a great human being and brilliant legacy that communities are fortunately getting to know better through this exhibit. Sadly we are also reminded of the untimely death of this gentle man of peace to senseless violence and the day we lost the passionate humanity, the music and the voice that the world is in much need of today.
