The Sukhoi Su-25 (NATO reporting name: Frogfoot) is a single-seat, twin-engine jet aircraft developed in the Soviet Union by the Sukhoi Design Bureau. It was designed to provide close air support for the Soviet Ground Forces. The first prototype made its maiden flight on 22 February 1975. After testing, the aircraft went into series production in 1978 at Tbilisi in the Soviet Republic of Georgia. Russian air and ground forces nicknamed it "Grach" ("Rook"). Early variants included the Su-25UB two-seat trainer, the Su-25BM for target-towing, and the Su-25K for export customers. Upgraded variants developed by Sukhoi include the Su-25T and the further improved Su-25TM (also known as Su-39). By year 2007, the Su-25 is the only armoured airplane still in production except the Su-34 whose production just started.[1] It is currently in service with Russia and various other CIS states as well as export customers. During its more than twenty-five years in service, the Su-25 has seen combat with several air forces. It was heavily involved in the Soviet war in Afghanistan, flying counter-insurgency missions against the Mujahideen. The Iraqi Air Force employed Su-25s against Iran during the 198089 iraniraq War. Most of them were later destroyed or fled to Iran in the 1991 Persian Gulf War. In 1993, Abkhazian separatists used Su-25s against Georgians during Abkhazian War.[2] Eight years later, the Republic of Macedonia Air Force employed Su-25s against Albanian insurgents in the 2001 b.../b

Sukhoi Su-25 attacking a French camp in Cote d'Ivoire
Time :
0 : 36
Rare footage of the attack by an Ivorian Sukhoi Su-25BK on a French camp on November 6 2004, which killed nine French soldiers. Ivory Coast purchased a total of four Su-25s (two Su-25ubks and two Su-25Ks) from Belarus. In early November the FANCI began to fly sorties against rebel positions in the North in what was widely seen as an attempt to recapture the rebel-held territory and break the ceasefire. On November 6 both Su-25ubks took of from Yamoussoukro and headed towards Bouaké where they fired their full load of unguided 55mm rockets into the camp of French peacekeepers. According to the Ivorian government the incident was accidental, but in fact it was a deliberate attempt to intimidate the French. The camp was well marked for air recognition and only a day before it had been overflown by an Ivorian UAV. The French responded quickly and took out both Sukhois with Milan atgms, they also destroyed several Ivorian helicopters. Numerous clashes followed between FANCI troops, Gbagbo supporters and the French during which an ex-Bulgarian Mi-24D was used to fly yet another sortie against the French. Both Sukhois were piloted by Eastern European mercenaries.

The base housed the 22nd Ground Attack Air Regiment (flying Sukhoi Su-25s), which was part of the 10th Combined Air Corps. When the corps transformed into Tactical Air Command the 22nd Ground Attack Air Base transitioned to the new structure. After 26th RAB - Dobrich was de-activated its squadron, flying the dedicated recon planes - the Su-22M-4/UM-3K was transferred to Bezmer where it very briefly operated as an Air Reconnaissance Flight before it disbanded a little more than a year later. Today the 22nd GAAB has two squadrons: 1st Squadron (called "Rattlesnake" or as its patch says "Crotale") and 2nd Squadron (called unofficially "The Khans", because of the traditional Bulgarian insignias of its ancient rulers it has in its patch). The base took intensively part in every joint exercise at home and abroad, held until the time of its establishment.

SU-25 in retirement at the Prague Air Museum
Time :

Sukhoi SU-25 at an outdoor museum near Prague. This plane is a less sophisticated attempt to do what the A-10 does. In layout it is much more conventional than the A-10, really more like the A-9, which never went into production. The plane appeared to be extremely rugged, and was clearly able to haul a huge load of weapons. Here's the Wikipedia entry for this plane, which is extremely thorough: en.wikipedia.org This was an amazing museum with a huge number of cold war airplanes out there corroding away in the weather. When I was younger I never thought I'd see this stuff just sitting there. I was worried we'd be seeing these migs and Sukhois coming over the horizon. Touching, really, to see all that military hardware dissolving. There was a lot that wasn't on display, I'm afraid. You can see some of it on Google Earth. They appear to have several Il-28s, a DC-3 (Hopefully the Soviet clone) a Gloster Meteor and an F-4 (Formerly British) in the back lot that are not on display. There are also a whole bunch of former Soviet transport planes back there. Perhaps they'll be showing them off next time I'm there. Check out this list of aircraft at this interesting site www.aviation.ru Peace on Earth!

Russian pilots nicknamed it "Grach" ("Rook"). The pilot sits low in the cockpit, protected by an armoured bathtub assembly which makes for a cramped cockpit. Visibility is also limited, a trade-off for improved pilot protection. Rearwards visibility is very limited, compensated by a periscope. Music: Death in Vegas - 'Rematerialised'.

Yes, I know its another Russian Tank.. but it's a model I finished a couple of weeks ago, and the only model I had ready to make a video of.. so there!! :) Current projects include a Swedish SE-104 Glider (1/72 resin kit) and a Sukhoi Su-25 (1/72 Revell kit), plus the one I'm working on right now, ie the T-33 Shooting Star (Academy 1/48). The decals are giving me bother, so the build will take longer than anticipated, while I work my way around them and try to solve the problem without dissolving the decals..
