Grabación de la televisión italiana (Schegge, Rai 3) del cuarteto de Ornette Coleman en 1974. El tema que interpretan es "School Work", melodía recurrente de Ornette que más tarde volvería a aparecer como "The Good Life" en su obra sinfónica Skies Of America (1972) y que finalmente se convertiría en el núcleo de Dancing in Your Head (1973). A la guitarra James "Blood" Ulmer, Ornette empezaba en esta época a experimentar con nuevas configuraciones del cuarteto introduciendo instrumentos eléctricos. La cinta presenta a Coleman en el periodo de transición y experimentación en que se formó Prime Time.

Según la leyenda, Roma fue fundada en el año 753 a.C. por los gemelos Rómulo y Remo, que habían sido amamantados por una loba. Roma se situó a orillas del Tíber, en un punto donde el río se estrecha. Asentada sobre el monte Palatino, era un lugar de paso para rutas comerciales como la Vía Salaria y otras calzadas.
En su origen, Roma fue una aldea de pastores provenientes del los montes Albanos y Sabinos. En algo más de 200 años, los romanos conseguirán liberarse de los etruscos. Poco a poco iniciarán su expansión, primero por la costa del mar Tirreno; más tarde ocupando toda la Italia central y, finalmente, tomando la Magna Grecia.
En la Historia de Roma se distinguen tres grandes periodos: Monarquía, República e Imperio.
La Monarquía se extiende desde el siglo VIII hasta finales del siglo VI a.C. Época de fuerte influencia etrusca, en ella surge el Estado romano y se crea un nuevo sistema político.
En el año 509 a.C. los romanos, libres ya del yugo etrusco, instituyeron la República. En el siglo III, una vez conseguida la unidad de Italia, comienza la expansión del Estado romano por el Mediterráneo, en la que los romanos deberán derrotar a su gran rival, Cartago, en las llamadas guerras púnicas. La primera de ellas, entre los años 264 y 241 a.C., se salda con el paso a manos romanas de las islas de Córcega, Cerdeña y Sicilia.
En la Segunda Guerra Púnica, el cartaginés Aníbal derrotará a los romanos en Tesino, Trebia, Trasimeno y Cannas. En respuesta, Publio Cornelio Escipión partió en dirección a Hispania y venció a los cartagineses en Ilipa. Con la batalla de Zama, en el año 202, Roma vencerá a su principal enemigo, convirtiéndose en la primera potencia del Mediterráneo.
En la Roma republicana, el Foro era el centro de la vida política y pública. Atravesado por la Cloaca Máxima, que vertía sus aguas en el Tíber, cerca se encontraba el templo de Vesta, en el que las sacerdotisas debían mantener el fuego sagrado. En el periodo republicano, además, se construyeron otros importantes templos.
La gran figura de la Roma republicana será Cayo Julio César. En el año 59 a.C. César conquista las Galias, iniciando un periodo de expansión que hará que Roma, a su muerte en el año 44 a.C., controle prácticamente todo el Mediterráneo, desde Hispania hasta Siria. La armada romana, la más poderosa del momento, hace llegar a sus temibles legiones a los puntos más alejados del Mediterráneo. Sus campamentos se establecen en las provincias bajo control y consiguen imponer el poder de Roma por todo el territorio.... |
