Mary Robinson Climate Change and Justice Barbara Ward Lecture Chatham House, London 11 December 2006 Mary Robinson, a former President of Ireland and United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, calls for policymakers to adopt an approach to climate change that is rooted in the international human rights framework. "We can no longer think of climate change as an issue where we the rich give charity to the poor to help them cope. Rather, this has now become an issue of global injustice that will need a radically different approach." "Climate change has already begun to affect the fulfilment of human rights, and our shared human rights framework entitles and empowers developing countries and impoverished communities to claim protection of these rights." http://www.iied.org/

Peace One Day - Mary Robinson, former UNHCHR
Time :

Mary Robinson, former UNHCHR - "an idea whose time has come" Jeremy Gilley is an actor turned film maker, who in the late 1990's became preoccupied with questions about the fundamental nature of humanity and the issue of peace. He decided to explore these through the medium of film, and specifically, to create a documentary following his campaign to establish a day of ceasefire and non-violence. In 1999, Jeremy founded Peace One Day, a non-profit organisation, and in 2001 Peace One Day's efforts were rewarded when the United Nations unanimously adopted the first-ever day of global ceasefire and non-violence on 21 September annually - Peace Day. In 2007 according to the UN, over 100 million people were active on Peace Day, in 192 countries. There were life-saving initiatives in 14 countries, and over 80 activities in Afghanistan alone where 1.4 million children were vaccinated against polio. Mary Robinson's Welcoming Message
Human Wrongs Commission
Time :
25 : 30
Jan 2001 We consider whether the most powerful global advocate for human rights -- the U.N. has been hijacked and silenced by those who should be its targets. We talk to HR Commisioner, Mary Robinson about her deep frustration with the world body. "They appoint their own diplomats who aren't experts at all except in keeping states protected from human rights allegations". International human rights lawyer Geoffrey Robertson dismisses the Commission with contempt; "It is rife with politicking and has been a disastrous failure over the years because the worst human rights violators have got the numbers". The governing body of the HRC includes well-known violators like China, Libya, Syria and Sudan. China routinely uses its political and economic clout to manipulate voting and deflect criticism. Rwanda managed to gain a Place on the Commission's governing body shortly before the genocide commenced. In the most telling condemnation of all, Mary Robinson is switching from UN high commissioner to the non -- government sector for the victim's sake.

Mary Robinson Πρώην Ύπατη Αρμοστής του ΟΗΕ για τα Ανθρώπινα Δικαιώματα "Poverty is widely understood today as a deprivation of basic human needs, including food, safe drinking water, sanitation facilities, health care, shelter, education and information. It is also characterized by unsafe environments and social discrimination and exclusion, by lack of participation in decision-making and in civil, social and cultural life. Wells came to Motown with the intention of getting a song to Jackie Wilson, but Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr. had other ideas. Instead, Gordy brought her into the studio to record her composition, "Bye Bye Baby." In subsequent releases, songwriter William "Smokey" Robinson emphasized her sultry side. Wells was Motown's first star and toured with the Beatles. Although she left the company at age 21 to pursue a career at 20th Century Fox, Mary Wells never surpassed her output at Motown. She died in 1992. Featured song: "You Beat Me to the Punch" by William "Smokey" Robinson.

Children's Rights, Public Service or Market Rules? The right to education and health are the most basic of children's rights and should be a priority in public policies. All too often, however, the state fails to deliver on its obligations. 1) Is the degradation of public services an inevitable product of a globalized world? 2) Can privatization provide solutions that meet basic needs and do not exclude major sections of society? 3) What can be done to ensure that poor and marginalized groups benefit from economic and technological innovations? Communist China kidnapped Tibet's Panchen Lama
Time :
5 : 18
In 1995 the Communist Chinese kidnapped The Panchen Lama, Gedun Choekyi Nyima from Tibet to a secluded joint in China, along with his two parents... The child was 8 years old when this abduction took place. The Communist then appointed their own Panchen Lama, Qoigyi Jabu, the son of two members of the Communist Party. The Communist refused to allow the U.N. from visiting with Gedun Choekyi Nyima. It is apparent the brave descendants of Mao's revolution fear religion. Any government which fears religion is not secured and no longer a legitimate government. The action of these kidnappers is despicable and should be condemned by people the world over. This is another example of how the ideology of communism is bankrupt. Tags: Dalai Lama Panchen Lama Tibetan people Amitabha Buddha The Wisdom Buddha. Tibetan Buddhist leader 10th Panchen Lama. Show reel for Irish vocalist and entertainer Nyle P. Wolfe Nyle Wolfe's unique passionate vocal ability inspires and soothes. A dedicated artist he has had a residency in the international operatic scene for most of his life. Now he has enhanced his enviable resume of live performances with a distinguished debut album, Moodswings. In a nostalgic performance that stirs the imagination, he sings a compilation of songs from the swing era revisited in a beautiful café orchestra setting. Half forgotten favourites such as Al Dubin's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" sit elegantly with perennials such as "A Nightingale sang in Berkley Square" and Charles Trenet's "La Mer". The engaging collection sung in Spanish, English and French showcase Wolfe's luxurious baritone and his sensitive musical understanding. Wolfe sang his first concert at the tender age of 6 performing "White Christmas" and "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" in his local Catholic Church. His introduction to theatre audiences soon followed at the Mayflower in Southampton in the Gilbert and Sullivan's "the Gondoliers". Answering a simple "sing and get paid for it" ad in the local newspaper led to is professional debut in Cork's Opera House. He graduated London's Royal Academy of Music with their highest award and won a scholarship to complete his training at Zurich's prestigious International Opera Studio. He has honed a reputation as one of the most talented vocalists of his generation. He has sung for international monarch's and presidents including Queen Elizabeth II and Bill Clinton as well as Ireland's own Mary Robinson. Stylish and charming, Wolfe is the eldest of six children. Always encouraged by their parents to follow their dreams both he and three of his siblings are employed in the entertainment industry. He regularly works on outreach programs for children and has a strong relationship with his local community. DW GRIFFITH 1776 or the HESSIAN RENAGADE MARY PICKFORD
Time :

1776 or The Hessian Renegades 1910 cast: Owen Moore, James Kirkwood, Kate Bruce, Mary Pickford, Gertrude Robinson, Frank Powell, William A. Quirk, George O. Nicholls, Anthony O'Sullivan, Arthur Johnson summary: The Hessians, German mercenaries brought in by the British during the American Revolution, are depicted in this exciting adventure story. A young dispatch rider finds himself near his home but surrounded by Hessians, and tries to hide at his family's home. The Hessians arrive to search the home and their leader shoots the boy dead in the course of his search -- the rider's father vows revenge and the rider's sister takes the place of a Hessian sentry. The father rallies his neighbors, all old men and old women, who arrive with axes, clubs, and anything else they can carry, and they overwhelm and kill the Hessians. DW GRIFFITH AT THE BIOGRAPGH COMPANY by IRA H. GALLEN DAVID WARK GRIFFITH, was already thirty-three years old when he began with the Biograph Company. He was born in Crestwood, Kentucky, on January 22, 1815, the son of Jacob Wark Griffith, a former colonel in the Army of the Confederacy. The Civil War was a decade past when he was born; yet his family, his home and the entire social and cultural atmosphere of the Confederacy were to help shape the man who would become the father of all moving picture making. His deep chest and his articulate, compelling voice, complete with a touch of the Southern accent, completed the portrait of a logical and very rational mind. His first and last ambition, until fate would turn his attention into picture, was to be a writer, a dream that he had nurtured since he was six years old. His Southern background, aided and abetted by his father's military career, added a martial air to Griffith's character, but with the war but a memory, he turned himself to more scholarly pursuits. He dreamed of becoming a great literary figure, a dream that was to turn more specifically to the interest of becoming a dramatist. In furtherance of this goal, he started acting to better his feel of and for the theatre. Griffith was very young when his father passed away; with the family wealth also gone, he looked for work along with the other able members of his family. Jobs ranged from the indignity of a wire elevator operator to the somewhat more refined status as a salesman for Encyclopedia Britannica; but eventually his interests would join hands with economic need and Griffith turned to acting. But survival as an actor meant that he would dig ditches and pick hops among other odd jobs to survive the periods of unemployment that are so characteristic of theatre work. During this time in his life, free moments were spent reading, writing and in dreaming of goals yet unachieved. Griffith was a dreamer; when it came to his future, he had an ego matching his confidence in himself and his future. His dreams and attitudes brought LINDA ARVIDSON into his life. They were traveling together in a road show company and she was taken up in the Griffith personality and dreams. She shared his dreams and wanted to develop with him. After they had been married for two years, a time of continued traveling with theatre troupes, finds them back in New York City. Even as a youth, Griffith seemed an unlikely candidate for marriage. Within him there was that certain something that rendered him larger than the conventional concept of marriage seemed to require. Yet now he's married and new responsibilities goaded old ambitions.
