"Why aren't we there yet? 20 years of sustainable development": David Runnalls, President, International Institute for Sustainable Development Twenty years ago the Brundtland Commission Report 'Our Common Future' was released, establishing and defining sustainable development as the global way forward. The report gained worldwide currency through the work of the UN Commission initiated in 1984—World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED), chaired by then Norwegian Prime Minister, Gro Harlem Brundtland. The most quoted definition of sustainable development resulted from the Brundtland report: "Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." Please join Runnalls as he looks back on the past twenty years to assess our accomplishments and learn from our failures, and then looks forward another twenty years to discuss how we can chart our way to a new sustainable future.
