The scene at Middleton Idaho High School this afternoon was a happy, though extremely hot one. At least 2000(estimated) people gathered at the school to catch shuttle buses provided by the Middleton School District to welcome home the Stockdale family,the recipients of a new home from Tv's Extreme Makeover Home Edition. Included in the crowd were labor volunteers like us.. throngs of people who donated labor on the Stockdale's new home. It was approaching 100 degrees. Young and old alike sweated it out around us in a line. Volunteers from Middleton High School sold bottled water, and passed out sunscreen. Two hours into our line ride, our little group rounded the corner to the home stretch, we were finally at the buses. People carried signs saying "Move This Bus!".
We were then told there would be no more buses sent to the home. There were at least another 300 people waiting behind us in line. You could see the disappointement moving right down that line, back across the front of the school, back around the corner in front of the gym, and indeed, back into the middle courtyard of the school.
Knowing where the home was, we drove that way. We were welcomed warmly at the corner of Purple Sage Road and Duff by the Middleton Police, who, with a smile, let us know that we could not be allowed to walk the 1/4 mile down to the home.We were not alone, many others were here at this corner. Some stayed and were watching from afar to see if indeed, that bus had been moved yet.
The outpouring of love for this family is typical of Idahoans. We will donate labor, and come to work at 2am for a good cause. We will organize fundraisers like last night's Hoe Down in Middleton to make sure sure this family has some cash for things they will need. We will wait in line for two hours with minimal shade on one hot summer day just to see a family we do not even know, get a break in life.
And we resolve to take it all in stride if we are turned away from the festivities and fun part of this labor of love.

Faith Tipton-Smith is a single mother raising two girls, 16-year-old Missy and 8-year-old Emily. After working at the same job for 25 years, Faith was finally able to purchase her first home in July of 2004. On February 4, 2005 the unthinkable happened when this new home that Faith and her family had worked so hard for burned to the ground. They lost everything, including countless cheerleading trophies, family pictures, clothes and even their dog, Sugar. This family lost everything they cherished and loved. But, most importantly, everybody in the family was safe. During this time, Faith's 16-year-old son, Ransom, was her biggest support, helping his sisters with school, keeping the family together and, as time allowed, playing his favorite sport — golf.
On May 4, 2005, exactly three months to the day after the fire, the Tipton-Smiths' lives were shattered when Missy, their friend, Alex, and Ransom were involved in a car crash. Missy survived, but Alex and Ransom did not. Even after his death, Ransom showed his complete selflessness by donating his organs to save others -- including a 19-year-old girl who would have died without the blessing of Ransom's heart.
Within three months, the Tipton-Smiths' life was completely turned around. The shell of the house still remains, and the constant reminder of Ransom is with them everyday. Faith has always been very involved in her community, helping Missy and Emily on the cheerleading squad, volunteering at March of Dimes events, and now organizing the Ransom golf charity event to honor her son, the hero. Ask anyone in the community who deserves this, and the answer is always Faith!
In this episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Ty and the gang will bring this family home to a place they can fill with love and where the countless memories of Ransom can grow.

I have always been amazed by the spirit and motivation of Sgt Gilyeat. He is always a very firm and strong leader, but keeps himself approachable. This makes Daniel easy to like and easy follow, but you always know that you don't want to cross his path. Even when I was still a junior Marine finding my place in the unit, Sgt Gilyeat would find the time to talk with me and other new Marines and make up feel welcome, like we were part of the brotherhood. You can always see the gentleness in his eyes, but it's also easy to see that this is one guy who you want working with you, and not against you. I admire his rugged appreciation for all things Marine. |

In April of 2007, 14-year-old Tyler Eklund was an up-and-coming snowboarder practicing at a Nationals tryout when he crashed hard and broke several vertebrae in his neck. Now, Tyler is paralyzed from the neck down and unable to breathe on his own. To compound the family's crisis, while at the hospital in Reno, the Eklund's home was also badly vandalized.
KOHD-TV has contacted its affiliacy, ABC, and nominated Tyler Eklund and his family for the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition show. Extreme Makeover receives thousands of applications every week, so KOHD, with help from the Central Oregon community, is collecting interviews, signatures and additional applications on the Eklund's behalf to help their nomination stand out.

We east coasters get all giddy when television shows come around. I know, I know, it's old hat for you Californians; but we don't see them too often outside our living room, so it's nice when they're in town. The Extreme Makeover: Home Edition crew is putting up a house (the reveal is tomorrow) about five minutes from our church, so I took an hour on Friday to stop by and see if I could get some good footage.
Turns out I arrived just in time for the demolition! I managed to slip past the barriers and got a really good spot right across the street from the house they tore down. And so I present to you, without further ado, my rendition of how this sappy show should be done. Ok, ok, one more ado: that's no mistake at the end; Ty ran the whole bathtub drop scene like ten times. Now, on with the show: |
