1958 Ford Edsel Pacer
Cherry Red and Snow White...and all seven dwarves could fit inside! Flashy, spacious, near mint condition, this '58 Edsel Pacer is a collector's gem. The 50- year-old beauty boasts just under 80,000 miles and has been stored inside by its two owners who've lavished constant TLC on it. The interior is clean and in the glove compartment you will find the original owner's manual! A classy, class III, four-door sedan named after Henry Ford's son, the car has its own incredible history of Bay Area cruising and wine country parades.
According to "Escape Roads", Auto Week 12/24/07, the front end is downright sexy featuring dual headlights, a shiny chrome bumper and an ovoid air intake between two grilles. The back features a "contrastingly horizontal theme with taillights high for safety." While the current owner fondly refers to this middle-aged beauty as a "sweet ride", auto week lauds its road feel: "Its manual steering is sharp and communicative, and the mighty torque (400 lb-ft) and aggressively raspy exhaust of its 303-hp, 361-cid V8 provide endless entertainment. Contemporary testers clocked 0-to-60-mph runs of 10.2 seconds. We found the Edsel athletic, if not sporty, with a ride that was comfortable but not soft."

For all you young'ns who never heard of an Edsel, the Edsel was manufactured by the Ford Motor Company between 1958 to 1960. Although the Edsel was a excellent automobile, Ford ceased their manufacture because they were not popular with the American public. Folks just didn't appreciate the styling and didn't understand if it was supposed to be a step up or step below the Mercury. It was said to be "The wrong car at the wrong time." The word Edsel became synonomous with 'commercial faiure'.
In 1960 the Edsel Comet was reassigned to the Mecury Division and did very well. Later, in 1970 Ford released the Maverick which shared the Comet's body style. One might say the Ford Maverick was an Edsel. |

Back in December 1987, my dad bought a 1957 Edsel, out in Albuquerque, New Mexico. We were in Orlando, Florida. I was in college and had just finished the fall semester. My dad offered to fly me and my friend the Captain out to Albuquerque, and pick it up and drive it to Orlando for him. Sounded like a fun road trip. So we did it. This 6 part series is pretty much all the home video we shot. It should really be edited down to the highlights...but it's still kind of fun to watch. The video starts as we head out from Albuquerque. Little did I know I would be moving there 20 years later...or that this car would eventually cause an accident that pretty much ripped my dad's hand off. But that's another story for another time. Let's begin the journey. |

Beautiful paint and interior on this car. The gray and red go together so well. Notice the drum speedometer, and the pushbutton actuation for the automatic transmission. Listen to the gentleman toward the end of the vid..he
is not the owner, but had experience working on those pushbuttons. They activated solenoids, and occasionally they might misfire, with signals going to the wrong solenoids, result activation of another gear whild driving, maybe reverse! I hope they had a safety interlock so the tranny wouldn't shift into reverse above a certain speed..Chrysler did..it would shift into Low instead, saving the tranny! Edsel had this pushbutton arrangement for only one year..it may not have been too widespread a problem, but who needs any when they launch a new car. It also illustrates the problem of new technology..it takes time to iron out the bugs! |
