When Steve Martin was celebrated at the Kennedy Center Honors several years ago, Diane Keaton sang a song at the event in his honor. On April 9, 2007, when Keaton was feted in the Film Society of Lincoln Center's annual Gala Tribute, Martin returned the favor with this banjo performance. Many in the audience laughed, but the song was an essentially sincere and lovely gesture. |

True Story in 1901 Pittsburgh. Mrs. Soffel (Keaton) is a Mother of three and the warden's wife. While reading passages and handing out bibles to the prisoner's, she comes across deathrow inmates (Mel Gibson) and his Brother (Matthew Modine). What must have been shocking, even by today's standards, she falls in love with one of the inmates and helps both escape, ending up going with them. To TV's "Lost" fans, John Locke (Terry O'Quinn)is hot on the escapee's trail as Detective Buck McGovern. With a spoiler ending and quite long, I wouldn't exactly call it a trailer, so I'll call it a trailer-like micro movie.
Music is a mix of the original soundtrack to this movie, from Mark Isham's Film Music, Windham Hill Records, CD.

Despite its subject matter, Reds had its human and funny side, too. In this scene from Warren Beatty's 1981 tour de force as (co-)writer, director, actor and producer, John (Beatty) attempts to make Louise (Keaton) a special dinner for her birthday. Beatty's excellent physical comedy skills are showcased in this wonderful little scene.
Even for those not interested in (socialist) politics, Reds is a lesson in great film making. Innovative, as Beatty was the first to use the "talking heads" of the so called witnesses to tie the scenes together. Engaging, for by weaving the romance between John Reed (Beatty) and Louise Bryant (Diane Keaton) through the political and analytical scenes, Beatty manages to never let the movie become dull or too serious, despite the subject matter.
Some of the impressive cast play the roles of their lifetime. Keaton has never been better, Nicholson is brooding, Stapleton deservedly won an Oscar for her role as Emma Goldman.
A must see, if only for the beautiful cinematography by Vittorio Storaro and the best acting many of the actors involved. |

Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All for You is a play by Christopher Durang first performed on December 14, 1979, at the Ensemble Studio Theatre in New York City. It was performed on a bill with one-act plays that included David Mamet, Marsha Norman, and Tennessee Williams. Elizabeth Franz first portrayed Sister Mary Ignatius and won an Obie Award for the role. Durang, who was raised Catholic, also won an Obie Award for writing the play.
The play was made into a movie, Sister Mary Explains It All, in 2001 for the Showtime network. It starred Diane Keaton, Laura San Giacomo, and Jennifer Tilly. |
