A rebroadcast of an hour with director Martin Scorsese and actor Daniel Day-Lewis about their new film, "The Gangs of New York". The film is set in mid-19th century New York City and tells the story of the conflict between the established criminal underworld and the newer immigrant gangs (from December 5, 2002). |

Daniel Day Lewis's charismatic early performance as punk Johnny in "My Beautiful Laundrette" (1985).
Originally shot for British television, the film was later released in cinemas and became an international success.
When Day Lewis auditioned for the role, he had just finished playing Dracula on stage where he appeared with his hair dyed blond. He later let his hair grow out to give Johnny his frosted "punk look". |

Second Oscar crown 'thrills' Daniel
Daniel Day Lewis said he was "thrilled and delighted" by his second Oscar win.
"It will keep me ticking over for a while," he said after his win for Best Actor for film There Will Be Blood, before paying tribute to the film's director Paul Thomas Anderson.
"My working partnership with Paul is something I will cherish for the rest of my life," he said. "I miss working with him every day but we have to think about the fact that life goes on."
The win for Daniel capped a great night for European stars, with American actors going home empty handed.
"There were many great performances by American actors," he said, referring to the European wins. "So I don't know if it serves any purpose to reflect on that."
On hearing his name read out, Daniel embraced George Clooney, who was also nominated in the Best Actor category.
"George has been there for me," he explained. "And apart from anyone else, he was the nearest nominee and he's just so incredibly generous. I was very proud to be included in that group of actors."

In his ruthless pursuit of wealth, misanthropic oilman Daniel Plainview tricks a local farmer into signing away his valuable drilling rights and rejects his own son, H.W., when the boy loses his hearing in an accident. An actor whose on-screen intensity is rivaled only by his off-screen intensity, Daniel Day-Lewis is one of the most acclaimed and private performers of his generation.
The stories about his dedication to his roles are legendary, from remaining in a wheelchair between takes for My Left Foot to his refusal to accept cigarettes in favor of rolling his own while filming The Last of the Mohicans.
27:05
No stranger to awards, having won an Oscar for his role in My Left Foot, Daniels performance in Martin Scorseses 2002 film Gangs of New York, saw him win the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor as well as the BAFTA for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role.
27:26
Daniel delivered an acclaimed performance as the vicious Bill the butcher, an uneducated sociopath who callously spills blood as he sees fit and cannily manipulates those around him.
It was for his leading role performance that he was awarded his third Academy Award nomination. |

Some clips from Daniel Day Lewis's breakthrough roles as street punk Johnny in Stephen Frears' "My Beautiful Laundrette" and upper-class dandy Cecil in Merchant-Ivory's "A Room With a View" (both 1986).
The films opened on the same day in the US, prompting critic Roger Ebert to say of the young Day Lewis: "Seeing these two performances side by side is an affirmation of the miracle of acting: That one man could play these two opposites is astonishing."
He's been astonishing us ever since. |

A clip from Daniel Day-Lewis's appearance on the AMC interview show 'Movies 101' in 2005. Hosted by NYU film professor Richard Brown, this program was reminiscent of 'Inside The Actors Studio', minus some of the pretentiousness. DDL looks pretty rough here, but his recounting of his brief career with the Royal Shakespeare Company is hilarious. |
