Cycling Tour of Eritrea 2008 has uncorked on Friday 11th April 2008 with 117 km road race and Abrham Belay from Debub zone has become stage one winner while Gigante Cycling Team leading the race in the first day of the race. The national race will continue up until Sunday 20th April for 9 grueling stages with only a day off after five consecutive races. The tour will cover a total distance of 1178 km with an overall 11 climbing contests. More than 100 riders are taking part at the tour that is being held for its 8th time consecutively. An overall 276,700 Nakfa prize money is at stake for individual and team winners.
The participation of representative teams from each zonal administration makes this tour first of its kind. According to the President of Eritrean National Cycling Federation Mr. Mengesteab Tekie, a UCI representative is on her way to witness Tour of Eritrea for the first time. This is expected to help acknowledge the standard of the national tour competition as an international race recognized under the rules and regulations of the UCI. This is surly the result of the finely honed riders who have been busy registering overlapping victories in different kinds of international competitions in Nairobi (Kenya), Algiers (Algeria), Yaounde (Cameroon) and in different cities of Ivory Coast.
Promising Eritrean riders like Daniel Teclehaimanot, Merhawi Gebrhiwot, Frekalsi Debesay, Dawit Haile and others have been bringing exceptional victories to their home country since their inclusion to the national team every time they participate in different international competitions in the past one year and three months.
In December 2006, Eritrea excelled in international cycling races at ANOCA competition held in Nairobi, Kenya where Daniel won golden medal in the opening time-trial race. Eritrea stood first with overall two gold, silver and bronze medals in the two days race.
The Eritrean National Cycling team in Algiers 2007 All Africa Games was on the podium in almost all kinds of prize ceremonies. The team secured its place to win gold medal as best African team of the competition. Individually, Frekalsi Debesay was adorned a historic All Africa Games bronze medal which is first of its kind to Eritrea after Independence. Merhawi Gebrhiwot stood 5th as Dawit Haile and Daniel Teclehaimanot squeezed themselves within the list of top 10 winners, claiming 9th and 10th place. At that moment, Eritrea topped the continent with an overall cycling result both in the junior and senior level, which handed the country unbelievably great honor. It is to be recalled that during the colonial era Tekeste (Gigante) had won gold medal in All Africa Games time-trial competition back in 1970s in Nigeria.
In November 2007, Eritrean cycling national team took part at the African Continental Championship in Yaounde, Cameroon where about 17 strong African national teams with some professional riders participated. Bereket Yemane pedaled at a speed of 37.762 km/hr to cover a 22 km time-trial competition. He stood 3rd and climbed on the podium with bronze medal. Frekalsi Debesay followed him for a 4th standing pushing 37.273 km/hr as Daniel Teclehaimanot stood 5th pedaling 36.483 km/hr.
What is more! Looking at this mammoth performance, the Eritrean National Cycling Team received an invitation from the Ivorian Cycling Federation to participate in a prolific Ivorian Tour competition from March 6th to 12th, 2008 where 5 strong European teams and 9 African National teams appeared. Eritrean riders once again were the icing cover to the cream standing ahead of all the other African national teams. Heroic Daniel Teclehaimanot individually outclassed all African riders. Beaten by four European teams, the Eritrean National team took an overall 5th standing. Top of Africans Daniel, on his turn, beaten only by 37 seconds ranked 5th standing behind three French and one Italian riders. Just one month after this particular competition, our top riders are engaged in the on going another enjoyable but hectic competition -- Tour of Eritrea 2008.

Eritrea Cycling Championship Race (Dec 16, 2007) and Daniel Teclehaimanot won the race: Three time Zoba Maekel cycling champion Yonas Zeckarias (better known as Halabay -- Milk Man) had been the dominant figure in Asmara cycling championship up until 1997. That was the year he knocked off his unprecedented treble success in style. For that reason, he became master of the game. And almost all Asmarians worshipped him as their 'god'. He meant everything to them as he was their idol. The then crowd attendance that set a record to this date sang 'Halabay . . . Halabay ...!' in glorifying his victory. And they never got quenched by his overlapping sprinting techniques as they love to see him winning and winning every time. He was an incredible champion on the road races and king on the hills as he hammered his three consecutive championship victories. I wonder if people had fallen crazy for the seven-time Tour de France Champion Lance Armstrong the way they did for Halabay.
Ten years after this historic achievement, Micheal Tiku from EriTel became the very close contestant to line up with Yonas Zeckarias' treble championship crown at the 2007 cycling championship. Considering his previous two championship crowns of the year 2005 and 2006, all eyes are on Micheal Tiku at the ongoing 2007 cycling championship. But there is one fact. No matter how hard Micheal Tiku fought, it looks unimaginable for him to gain as many supports as Yonas Zeckarias did 10 years back. Of course if he managed to grab another championship victory on this cycling contest, he would be able to equal with Yonas Zeckarias' record.
When the 2007 cycling championship uncorked on 25 November 2007, in the first three stages that are already completed, Micheal Tiku was seen struggling in gaining his rhythm. He came out bare handed in the first two Asmaria criterium contests. In the Asmara-Adi quala-Asmara route however, he stood 9th to score his first two points. This has currently made him stand 18th overall, 18 points behind the leader Meron Russom from Red Sea Sports Club.
The contest is still going on. Lots of unexpected things could unfold. But it has already looked a miracle for Micheal Tiku to overtake the group of riders queuing right in front of him and claim victory for the third consecutive year.
Nowadays, 2007 championship is burning with its fierce competition. Lots of super talented youngsters are making things so difficult for the experienced rider which is purely ironic. Merhawi Gebrhiwet, Micheal Tiku's teammate who is already crowned tour champion this year in his first ever appearance is one of those young catalysts bringing about a revolutionary change. He is now on the hunt for championship victory in the elite group standing second with only a point behind the leader. Merhawi has earned silver and bronze medals in three international competitions he participated in Kenya, Cameroon and Algeria. Dawit Haile and Aklilu Goitom from Asbeco; and Daniel Teclehaimanot from Debub cycling team are other youngsters within the least of 10 overall best riders.
The championship is now being led by Meron Russom who is gaining big fame for the relentless effort he is showing within and out side the town. Adulis cycling team is leading the team competition followed by Asbeco that is 9 points behind and Eritel 19 points behind.
On Sunday 16 December, 2007 cycling champion will resume with an 'elimination' Asmara criterium tough contest. This type of contest eliminates riders who are lagging behind at every round forcing the racers to sprint for a front seat every now and then. The last survival from this elimination contest claims victory and the last 10 survivals will keep points accordingly for themselves and for their teams.

Some clips from the 1990 World Cycling Championships. Sorry for the quality, but this is a transfer from videotape. On the track, Connie Paraskevin-Young takes on Renee Duprel for the match sprint championship. Towards the end of the clip there's footage from the US women's team time trial, and the women's road race (like 30 seconds each). |

This is a great video for firing yourself up before training!
So far, this 2005 promo video has only been available online via my Cycling Team Website www.i-team.co.uk which Rob Hayles is president of. (You can also download a higher quality version there.)
The beginning starts with a tongue-in-cheek tribute to those 1950's BBC cycling documentary's and then jumps into a resume of Rob's career, including World & Olympic Medals on the Velodrome and that often forgotten Tour of Britain stage win when he outsprinted Stuart O'Grady after a long break away. Complete with U2 Tribute band soundtrack! ;) |

Do you want to climb faster, sprint faster, time trial faster, for longer and with more comfort? Whether it's time trailing, sprinting or hill climbing, your ability to do these things is directly related to how well you are trained to put down the maximum amount of power to the pedals in the most efficient way. This is why producing power on the bike is so important to cyclists. Cycling is about dynamic functional movement, as with all sports. By recruiting the maximum amount of muscles to do a specific movement or task you will develop far more whole body power and stability while reducing your chance of injury than by using traditional muscle isolating strength training. Matt Brindle's Power-Up Functional Strength Training unleashes your full body power potential and will change the way you power train for cycling by using mobilises and strength training that is specific to cyclists.
This is the introduction to the DVD.
What do you get:
Introduction to Functional Strength Training
Explanation of the warm-up mobility exercises
Explanation of the strength programs
Warm-up mobility program with six exercise
Beginner program with six exercises
Iintermediate programs with six exercises each One advanced program with six exercise.
That's a total of 30 exercises!
"I recently purchased the Matt Brindle DVD from you. I have done the mobiliser exercises a couple of times and the begnner series once. Wow! What a workout. I was pretty sore the next day, but nothing too bad." Tyler, Port Angeles, WA, United States

The Flying Scotsman is a true story based on the inspirational and remarkable Scottish cyclist, Graeme Obree. In 1993, this unemployed amateur broke the world one-hour record on a bike of his own revolutionary design, which he constructed out of scrap metal and parts of a washing machine. Shortly after Graeme broke the record, he lost his title when another cyclist beat his time. This only served to motivate Graeme to break the record again, while also battling mental illness. |

League of American Bicyclists certified traffic cycling instructors demonstrate the rights and duties of cyclists in the United States. The video shows cyclists acting as drivers of vehicles making normal vehicular maneuvers including lane control, lane sharing, left and right turns, through movements and a freeway ramp crossing. This video is intended to show cyclists and motorists how it looks when cyclists act and are treated as vehicle drivers in normal urban traffic in the City of Long Beach, California. These skills are taught in by the League of American Bicyclists, Bike Ed program. You can find instructors and classes in your state at the education area of the League website:

Just a (slightly crap) clip of me out cycling.
My Mum did the filming, she isn't too good with the camera! Just got a briefing on how to use the thing before we left. I don't think she did too bad =p
Hadn't warmed up, only went out for 5mins to get some shots to see how my position looks on the bike.
Unfortunately, I don't own a turbo trainer, so just have to try and set up by getting clips of the road.
BACK TO THE POINT:
I think my hips have a bit of movement left in them.
I could def be lower too, but not to sure how to achieve this!
Should I move saddle back, heighten it, move aerobars or simply just shift my body somehow?
All tips greatly received!
(again, don't dis the speed, I was only out the door!) |

If you scrapped your plans for a fun, family road trip because of rising fuel prices, you may want to reconsider.
There's an alternative. Instead of gas power, you might try pedal power.
This just may be the time to hop on a bicycle and take off the way you did as a kid.
But, of course, before you do, you might want some tips on selecting and cycling in today's environmen | |
