Consolidated B-24 Liberator....

Consolidated B24 Liberator
Time :

Although often overshadowed by the B17 Flying Fortress, the B24 Liberator was built in greater numbers than any other US military aircraft and served with distinction in both war and peace. The first B24 Liberator made its maiden flight on 29 December 1939. Designed by the Consolidated Aircraft Corporation to rival the Boeing B17, the type proved an outstanding success, with 18500 aircraft being built by Consolidated, Douglas, North American and Ford between 1940 and 1945. 1900 B24s were supplied to the Royal Air Force. Liberators were used by RAF bomber squadrons in the Middle East, and from January 1944 became the principle RAF strategic bomber in the Far East. Liberators were also deployed by RAF Coastal Command, playing a key role in the war against Germany's submarine fleet. Liberators also saw service as transports; indeed, (AL504 Commando) became the personal aircraft of Prime Minister Winston Churchill for a short time. Liberators continued in use until December 1968 when the Indian Air Force retired its former RAF machines. Six from the first batch for the UK were directed to British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) for use in the North Atlantic Return Ferry Service. During WWII, Captain D.C.T. Bennett known as Pathfinder Bennett, flew the first crossing on 14 May 1941 taking 14½ hours. The thousandth crossing of the Atlantic took place in September 1944.

The Boeing B-17, Flying Fortress, in flight. The B-17 is an icon - a high-flying, long rang bomber that can unleash great destruction. It is a four-engine, propeller-driven, heavy bomber, which was used primarily in the daylight precision strategic bombing of German industrial and civilian targets. It was also used in the Pacific. The B-17 and the Consolidated B-24 were the two standard US heavy bombers until the B-29 Superfortress was introduced. The B-17 was flown by the Army Air Corps throughout WWII. It was used to bombard German targets. Later the chin turret was introduced, such as in the Memphis Belle. Its engines make a characteristic sound when it is in flight. The Liberty Belle is a famous B-17, which tours the country. People crawl into the very small gun turrets, especially the one under it. Only 14 B-17s remain airworthy and operational out to over 12,000 built. The B-17 was the most important bomber used by the US in the daytime air raids against Germany in WWII. An example of the B-17 is displayed at the Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio. A B-24 Liberator, the Strawberry Bitch, is also exhibited there. The UFO was spotted at 02.06. Most people immediately think B-17 when they hear someone mention a WWII heavy bomber. But actually it was the B-24 that to me was the real workhorse! It was produced in greater numbers than any other American combat aircraft of World War II and still holds the record as the most produced U.S. military aircraft. And it wasn't only used by the Americans but by many other allied air forces! It was faster than the B-17. Had a longer range while it would still carry a similar payload to that of the B-17. However it was a vulnerable plane and easily caught fire! I'm reliving a neat bit of history thanks to AlphaSim. I hope you'll enjoy this video of their Liberator. They covered the D G and J models. And please, this is youtube. Unfortunately the video size and compression methods aren't good enough to fully capture the beauty of this plane. If you want to see the HQ video then please visit my site.

From the Wright Brother's airplane to the stealth, these airplanes show the history of military aviation. This video shows a portion of a tour of the Wright Patterson AFB aircraft museum. This F-117 Stealth Fighter (Nighthawk) can seen from different angles. Its exhaust is well hidden. Although it uses the "F" designation, it is chiefly a ground-attack plane, which is also used as a bomber. Because the strength of a radar return is proportional to the edge configuration of an object, the plane has a boxy, aerodynamically unstable appearance. Its stealth technology also includes its surface coating. The SR-71, Blackbird, has a top speed of Mach 3.5 -- more than 3 times the speed of sound. Its actual top speed may be classified and some say it has flown at speeds up to Mach 14. It is 107 feet long with a maximum altitude of over 100,000 feet and has stealth capabilities. Some think a replacement, the Aurora, is entering service. The SR-71 may still be the world's fastest airplane. Some may have been brought back into service. The T-38, Talon, is an advanced, twin engine, high-altitude, supersonic jet. The Northrop jet is the only supersonic trainer in the world, used by few countries, and was used with the SR-71. Versions are still in use. The B-2, stealth bomber is made by Northrop Grumman. This multi-role heavy bomber can deploy both nuclear and conventional weapons. Also shown is the ACTUAL Boeing B-29 Superfortress, Bockscar, which dropped the second atomic bomb (plutonium bomb), called Fatboy, on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. The huge B-52D Stratofortress was used for later bombing missions. The GBU-27, a 2200 lb. laser-guided bomb was designed specifically for use for the F-117. It is considered a highly accurate missile compatible with the F-117's advanced targeting system. The GBU-27 was used in Baghdad, Iraq. The world's first operational jet fighter was the Messerschmitt, Me 262. The development of its engine, the Junkers Jumo 004 Turbojet, began in 1937 and large-scale production began in late 1944. By the time Germany surrendered in May 1945, over 5,000 engines had been made. The engine was first flight tested in 1942. An example of the B-1 is displayed at the Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio. A B-24 Liberator, the Strawberry Bitch, is also exhibited there. The Convair B-36J, "Peacemaker," Strategic Intercontinental Bomber, the largest combat airplane. Its wingspan is 230' and length is 162'. It was built to strike Europe from the US. It was the largest production aircraft ever built. It is distinctive because it is the only aircraft capable of attacking a target on another continent and returning to home base without having to refuel.
