Copa Libertadores: Santos beats Chivas 1-0, reaches Group 6 lead. Colombian striker Mauricio Molina scored in the first half and Santos defeated Mexico's Chivas 1-0 in the Copa Libertadores on Tuesday.
The result moved the Brazilian club to the top of Group 6 with four points, one more than Chivas and two more than Colombia's Cucuta Deportivo. Bolivia's San Jose trails with
one point. All four clubs have played two matches.
Molina netted the winner at Vila Belmiro in the 22nd minute with a booming shot from outside the area, hitting the right-upper corner of Chivas goalkeeper Luis Michel.
Defender Domingos had scored for Santos just three minutes into the match, but the goal was disallowed because of offsides.
The result kept alive Santos' 22-match unbeaten streak against foreign teams at home in the Copa Libertadores. The club has won its last 11 matches, and the last defeat was against Colombia's Deportivo Juniors in the 1984 edition of the tournament.
It was the first loss in 10 matches this season for Chivas, which has the best record in the Mexican league with 16 points from eight matches.
Santos, seeking its first Copa Libertadores title since winning consecutive championships with Pele in 1962 and 1963, was coming off a disappointing 1-0 loss to minnow Sertaozinho in the Sao Paulo state championship on Saturday.
The club is having a struggling start to its season, and it entered Wednesday's match with only four wins in its first 12 matches.
Coach Emerson Leao made several changes to Tuesday's starting lineup, giving a chance to Argentine striker Sebastian Tripodi but leaving out Ecuadorean midfielder Michael Jackson Quinonez and Chilean striker Sebastian Pinto. Quinonez entered the match in the second half.
It was the teams' first encounter in the Copa Libertadores.
In the next Group 6 round, Santos will play at San Jose on March 19, while Chivas will host Cucuta on March 11. |

(28/03/2008) Cucuta Put Chivas In Danger Zone. Cucuta Deportivo picked up a vital 1-0 victory over Chivas de Guadalajara, a result that practically sends them to the next round, but almost eliminates the Mexicans.
Chivas, who desperately needed a good result in Colombia, dominated proceedings early on in the match, creating several good opportunities to go ahead.
But Cucuta, who surprised everyone by reaching the semifinals of the Copa Libertadores last year, slowly came more into the match.
They were only playing with one forward, but almost went ahead through Uruguayan striker Matias Urbano, but his good header in the 21st minute flashed inches wide of the post.
After the break the Colombians perhaps played the better football, but both teams continued to play well below their potentials, to the frustration of the 30,000 crowd.
In the 52nd minute Cucuta took the lead through Urbano, who tapped the ball in from close range after meeting a smart cross from Elvis Gonzalez.
They could have doubled their lead in the 67th minute when a Macnelly Torres effort was well saved by Chivas goalkeeper Michel.
The victory consolidates Cucuta's position at the top of the Group 6 standings, as they hope to relive what they did last year, when they were the surprise revelation of the competition. |

Cúcuta Deportivo venció 1-0 a Chivas y se consolidó en liderato del Grupo 6 de la Copa Libertadores. El único gol lo marcó el argentino Matías Urbano, al minuto siete del segundo tiempo.
El equipo colombiano llegó a 8 puntos en la tabla de posiciones y un triunfo en su próximo juego, el 8 de abril contra San José de Bolivia, como visitante, asegurará su presencia en la siguiente fase del torneo continental.
Pese a que fue un triunfo sufrido y por el marcador más ajustado del fútbol, Cúcuta ganó con personalidad y mostró el estilo defensivo, aunque práctico, marcado por el técnico Pedro Sarmiento.
Al principio del partido, al Cúcuta le costó acomodarse en la cancha y se demoró en controlar las intenciones ofensivas de Chivas, que comenzó con la determinación de abrir la cuenta tan pronto como le fuera posible.
Y estuvo muy cerca de lograrlo a los 14 minutos de juego, cuando Francisco Rodríguez cabeceó en las barbas del arquero cucuteño Leandro Castellanos, quien no obstante voló como si tuviera resortes en las piernas y rechazó al tiro de esquina.
La opción de gol del equipo mexicano fue el despertador que necesitaba el Cúcuta para salir del letargo y equilibrar las acciones. A los 22 minutos, el argentino Matías Urbano, también de cabeza, estremeció las manos del golero Luis Michel y fue Chivas el que se salvó de caer.
El partido se volvió de ida y vuelta, con vértigo, porque Chivas no bajó la guardia y Cúcuta se veía cada vez más animado para buscar la victoria. Tanto, que James Castro se perdió el primer gol de la noche al rematar sin puntería un pase magistral de Macnelly Torres, a la media hora.
En el segundo tiempo, Cúcuta mostró la versión más parecida hasta el momento del equipo copero del año pasado. Urbano, a los siete minutos, decretó la única anotación del partido al empujar la pelota entre un bosque de piernas mexicanas, tras una hábil maniobra individual de Elvis González por el costado izquierdo.
Enseguida Cúcuta mostró cambio de ritmo, seguridad para manejar el resultado y restos físicos para correr a buen ritmo hasta el pitazo final, mientras paulatinamente dominaba a su antojo al 'rebaño sagrado' de las Chivas.

SANTOS, Brazil - Colombian midfielder Mauricio Molina scored four goals and Santos trounced San Jose of Bolivia 7-0 in the Copa Libertadores on Tuesday.
Santos has seven points, one less than Group 6 leader Cucuta Deportivo of Colombia. San Jose remains with four points, one more than Mexico's Chivas. Each side has only two matches remaining in the group stage. The top two advance to the round of 16.
Molina scored in the 22nd, 32nd, 63rd and 86th minutes.
San Jose had beaten Santos 2-1 on March 19 in the high altitude of Oruro, but on Tuesday Domingos started Santos rolling at Vila Belmiro Stadium in the 17th with a header from a free kick by defender Kleber.
Molina scored his first goal dribbling past a defender before firing a bouncing left-footer from outside the area.
The Colombian made it 3-0 with a shot from near the penalty spot after San Jose defenders failed to clear a cross inside the area.
San Jose played a man down from the 34th after Luis Mario Palacios was ejected because of a vicious foul on Kleber Pereira.
Molina's third goal came with a neat one-timer fired into the right-upper corner of San Jose goalkeeper Daniel Vaca.
Striker Kleber added another with a header in the 79th - while apparently offside - and Ecuadorean midfielder Michael Jackson Quinonez came off the bench to score from inside the box in the 81st.
Molina closed the scoring five minutes later, dribbling past a defender before striking from close range.
The score would have been higher if Uruguayan referee Liber Prudente hadn't disallowed striker Wesley's 52nd-minute goal because of offside.
Santos has its focus solely on the Copa Libertadores after being eliminated from the traditional Sao Paulo state championship on Saturday in a disappointing 1-1 draw against Rio Claro.
The club is seeking its first Copa Libertadores title since consecutive championships in 1962 and 1963, when Pele was still in action.
Next week, Santos travels to Mexico to face Chivas, while San Jose hosts Cucuta Deportivo. |
