Christopher Plummer's 50 Years of Movie Career - A Tribute
Time :
8 : 35
See what a grace was seated on his brow; Hyperion's curls, the front of Jove himself, An eye like Mars, to threaten and command, A station like the herald Mercury New-lighted on a heaven-kissing hill; A combination and a form indeed, Where every god did seem to seat his seal To give the world assurance of a man. (from Hamlet) My tribute to Christopher Plummer's fifty-year-long movie career (his first films, Wind Across the Everglades and Stage Struck, were both released in 1958). A POLEMICAL NOTE. WHAT IS THE ACADEMY WAITING FOR BEFORE IT GIVES HIM HIS LONG DESERVED OSCAR??? CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER SHOULD HAVE BEGUN GETTING ACADEMY OSCARS SINCE 1964, WHEN HE PERFORMED WONDERFULLY IN "THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE"! All stills - but the opening and closing portraits and the photos from Stage Struck and Man in the Chair - are shot by myself from DVDs using a digital camera. They come from the following films: Stage Struck (1958) The Fall of the Roman Empire (1964) The Sound of Music (1965) Triple Cross (1967) Battle of Britain (1969) The Royal Hunt of the Sun (1969) Waterloo (1970) Conduct Unbecoming (1975) The Man Who Would Be King (1975) Aces High (1976) Murder by Decree (1979) Nicholas Nickleby (2002) Agent of Influence (2002) Man in the Chair (2007) The opening portrait of Christopher Plummer as a child comes from the bio-documentary "King of Players" (1998). Music: Frédéric Chopin, Nocturne Op. 9/2, played by Adam Harasiewicz.
Christopher Plummer in "Inside Daisy Clover" (Part III of 4)
Time :
9 : 18
This is a selection of the scenes performed by Christopher Plummer in the film "Inside Daisy Clover" (U.S.A., 1965, directed by Robert Mulligan). Set in the Thirties, the film is about the turning of a poor and wild 15-year-old girl, Daisy Clover (played by Natalie Wood), into a Hollywood star by an unscrupulous producer. In this film Christopher Plummer plays one of his villain roles, that of Hollywood producer Raymond Swan. In Part III: In the first scene Swan threatens Lewis Wade (Robert Redford), the young actor of Swan Studios with whom Daisy is in love, to have him arrested for his recent night out with Daisy. So Wade makes his marriage proposal to Daisy, and in the second scene the marriage is going to be celebrated. (What happens between the two scenes showed) Daisy and Wade go on their honeymoon, but one morning Daisy wakes up alone in a motel: Wade has abandoned her. Then Daisy goes back to Swan's house. There she undergoes a scene of jealousy from Swan's wife, Melora, who proves to be in love with Wade, and who reveals Wade's homosexuality to Daisy. The second scene of this Part III takes place the morning after Daisy's return. Daisy has spent the night in a chair by the swimming pool, and it is there that Swan finds her, still asleep. Swan seems to have spent a bad night, too, and, in front of asleep Daisy, he performs a SOLILOQUY (NOT TO BE MISSED!!!) where he has his only moment of sincere tenderness in the whole film. The soliloquy ends with the famous KISS between Christopher Plummer and Natalie Wood. P.S. "Inside Daisy Clover" is at least the third of Chris's films I know in which Chris plays a man who is discarded by a woman in favour of another one: 1) here both Daisy and Melora seem to like Robert Redford better than Chris; 2) in "Stage Struck" Susan Strasberg likes Henry Fonda better than Chris; 3) in "Hanover Street" Lesley-Anne Down likes Harrison Ford better than Chris. Each time I am absolutely amazed and think: BUT HOW UNLIKELY DOES THIS STORY SOUND???

The enchanting Christopher Plummer as (perhaps) you have never seen him before. One of the many astonishing virtuoso performances of Christopher Plummer's art, in a film which is a real gem and a definitely must see for every admirer of this unique artist. The film is "The Royal Hunt of the Sun", a 1969 British production based on a play by Peter Shaffer and directed by Irving Lerner. Christopher Plummer plays Atahualpa, the divine king (son of the Sun) of the Inca Empire, and Robert Shaw plays Spanish conqueror Francisco Pizarro. Everything in this film is worth seeing: the screenplay and dialogues, the music, the performances of all the actors. Christopher Plummer gives an absolutely astonishing artistic performance. Moreover... in this film he is so outrageously handsome that every minute you will ask yourselves: but am I seeing Christopher Plummer playing, or rather Beauty itself personified into a human semblance? In this clip Atahualpa and Pizarro are carring on a private conversation, and learning to know and respect each other.

Christopher Plummer in "The Shadow Box" (Part I)
Time :
9 : 52
This clip is taken from the 1980 TV-movie version of the stage play "The Shadow Box". The original play was written by Michael Cristofer and made its Broadway debut in 1977. The TV-movie version is directed by Paul Newman. The play narrates a couple of days in the lives of three terminally ill patients and their families living in a hospice. Christopher Plummer plays one of the three dying people, Brian, a writer who lives with his boyfriend Mark. In the two days narrated by the play, Brian is interviewed about the process of dying, presumably by a psychological counselor of the hospice. Then he receives the visit of his exuberant ex-wife Beverly (Joanne Woodward), who meets Mark for the first time.

In Part IV: After Daisy's marriage breakdown, Swan allows Daisy to take her mother away from the mental hospital and settle with her in a house by the sea, but after few time Daisy's mother commits suicide. The opening scene of this Part IV follows the episode of Mrs. Clover's death: during the dubbing of her film in Swan Studios, Daisy has a nervous breakdown. The second scene is set in Daisy's house, where Daisy is in bed looked after by a nurse, and Swan proves himself to grow more and more impatient with her illness. In his final scene at Daisy's bedside, Swan's wickedness reaches its apex. I'm sorry for the imperfect audio/video synchronization, but it is a problem caused by the digitalization device I cannot solve.

Christopher Plummer - Prologue to Shakespeare's Henry V
Time :

The audio clip comes from a 1990 recording Christopher Plummer made in St Jude's Church in London, with music (other than Plummer's own voice!) from William Walton's film score to the 1944 Laurence Olivier film. The photos come from Christopher Plummer's performance of Henry V at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival of Canada in 1956 (he was 26). According to all critics' reviews, his 1956 performance was absolutely outstanding. I am puzzled about only one thing... How could he play a believable King Harry when, in the courting scene, he had to deliver these lines to Princess Katharine: "I dare not swear thou lovest me; yet my blood begins to flatter me that thou dost, notwithstanding the poor and untempering effect of my visage. Now beshrew my father's ambition! He was thinking of civil wars when he got me: therefore was I created with a stubborn outside, with an aspect of iron, that when I come to woo ladies I fright them." Can you imagine the angelic-looking boy you see in the photos pronouncing these words?!! :)
