American tightrope walker Karl Wallenda risked his life for charity on a highwire over a circus tent in London on in 1974. In blustering winds and drizzling rain, Wallenda walked along 300 feet (about 95 metres) of wire suspended 70 feet (about 22 metres) above one of Europe's largest big tops, that of Mary Chipperfield's circus.
Wallenda is from one of the world's most famous circus families and lost two members of his immediate family through high-wire accidents.

Celebrities call for the freeing of Rhanee, the elephant, from the Valwo Zoo in Spain. Rhanee is alone again in her small enclosure, after the death of her companion Costa.
Rhanee caught the public attention after she was shown on video being beaten at Mary Chipperfield Promotions. Her keeper was jailed for cruelty, and two directors of Mary Chipperfield Promotions, Mary Chipperfield Cawley and Roger Cawley, were convicted and fined for cruelty to other animals. The charges were brought by ADI after we collected devastating video evidence during an undercover investigation. However it seemed that there was to be no justice for Rhanee when MCP closed down, she disappeared without trace.
Having scoured Europe, ADI discovered Rhanee over a year later, alone, in a small barren enclosure at Valwo Zoo in north central Spain. An international campaign was launched to appeal for Rhanee to be retired to a sanctuary which specialises in the care of abused elephants; the campaign was backed by Sir Paul McCartney, Brian Blessed, Jay Kay of Jamiroqui and many more. However, the zoo's owner, the huge entertainment group Parques Reunidos, refused all approaches, but as the media pressure mounted, a series of improvements were made to Rhanee's enclosure: a small shelter was added, a small pool dug and filled with water, a companion was introduced, a female elephant called Costa.
ADI believe that the addition of Costa was the biggest single improvement to the quality of Rhanee's life. The pair appeared to get on well, they would move around together, and touch each other frequently. We noted a reduction in Rhanee's stereotypic behaviours.
Tragically, however, a check-up visit in April this year brought very disturbing news Costa was extremely sick. She was skin and bone, her legs were constantly buckled, so that her rump was almost touching the ground; she had a problem with her trunk, and was unable to drink properly; she had extreme difficulty walking.
ADI immediately contacted Parques Reunidos asking what action they were taking to help Costa. We offered any assistance to help alleviate her suffering. We received no reply. Costa died in May.
In July, a further visit to Valwo Zoo confirmed that Rhanee was once again alone. It seems that Rhanee, more than ever, symbolises the misery heaped upon captive elephants. Will she ever get any justice? ADI have again written to Parques Reunidos, offering to relocate Rhanee to a specialist sanctuary. Let's hope they have finally given up on any hope of breeding from this sad, lonely, damaged elephant.

Adriano and Dejan Stankovic inspired the Nerazzurri to a 4-1 win at home Basel on Tuesday evening to secure an aggregate 5-2 victory which sees Inter through to the group stage of the Champions League.
Roberto Mancini promised an attacking game, and Inter's intentions were clear from the outset. Recoba shot at Basel keeper Zuberbuhler after fifteen seconds, then before the first minute was up Inter took the lead through Adriano, whose diagonal shot from a Stankovic assist found the bottom right-hand corner of the net.
Inter's second came in the 13th minute when Recoba laid the ball off to Adriano who squared to Stankovic. From the edge of the Basel box the Serb sent a right-footed screamer past Zuberbuhler.
January signings Adriano and Stankovic combined again minutes later, the Brazilian's shot finishing just off-target, then once again when the midfielder shot wide from an inviting position inside the Swiss penalty area.
Basel came up against a black and blue wall each time they moved forward and only penetrated it once in the opening period when Yakin's free kick from 20 yards forced a terrific save out of Toldo.
Basel's breakthrough came just after the restart when Kleber's left-wing cross rolled through to Sterjovski, who turned Stankovic then blasted past Toldo. But Inter's reply was instant and Adriano stunned the Swiss with his second strike to restore the Nerazzurri's two-goal advantage - a low, left-footed drive which found the bottom right-hand corner. Alvaro Recoba made the result safe with the Nerazzurri's fourth in the 60th minute with a trademark left-footed shot from the edge of the Swiss box.
The Champions League group stage draw will take place at 16:00CET on Thursday afternoon.

Save Hemel Hospital Hemel Hospital is under threat from closure. This is our chance to make a difference and get our voice heard by an NHS hospital trust that is un-democratically acting without a fair consultation.
The following towns are affected, whether due to their services closing, or being in the Hemel Hempstead Hospital catchment area: Berkhamstead, Tring, Abbots Langley, Kings Langley, St Albans, Berkhamsted, Bovingdon, Chipperfield, Chesham, Tring. Also in close proximity are the towns of Hatfield, Amersham, Aylesbury.
Remember Buncefield? Just imagine what could have happened if it had struck in the week with the M1 closed and no hospital? Imagine what could happen if another unseen disaster occurred in the area. Services are planned to move to Watford, or worse - with the possible closure of Watford General Hospital, a super-hospital somewhere between Hemel and Norfolk!
This would mean a catchment area population of nearly 500,000 people without critical Accident and Emergency (A&E) services |
