We visited the Chiang Kai Shek memorial in the morning; the square is large, its structures are imposing and work, whether it be the Lion's club stalls on the ground or the extensive renovation exercise above, is everywhere. It's a good place to do stuff. |

We always take visitors to Taipei here. It is one of the most amazing sites in Taipei. It was built to commemorate Chiang Kai Shek. It is almost an exact replica of Sun Yat Sen's mausoleum in Nanjing. Anyway, we went there with our friends Simon and Helen and right at the end Helen comes into the picture. There is no commentary, just the views and the background noise. |

On March 31, 2007, Formosa People's Court of Taiwan has attempted to open the first session of the tribunal for the trial of Major Criminals in Taiwan 228 Massacres (1947). But, the local police forces of Tao-Yuan County have rudely interrupted the tribunal and dispersed the civilian attendants, including the 228 victim families. And they have even arrested some participants.
The Nuremberg Trials of War Criminals took place soon after WWII, but for more than 60 years, the authoritarian KMT party/government in Taiwan has suppressed any attempts of Taiwan people to seek for justice.
Actually, this first session was held at a parking lot within the CKS mausoleum in Tao-Yuan County, a special zone ruled directly by the Taiwan Presidential Office. Whether the local Tao-Yuan polices have any right to move into this special zone to do anything (without the permission of the Taiwan Presidential Office) remains unclear. And we wonder what the Taiwan Presidential Office would have anything to say on this incident?
According to Ms. Susie Su, a consultant to Formosa People's Court of Taiwan, they had applied prior to the local Tao-Yuan Authority for this gathering for the public trial of CKS, but the request was never approved. Even 60 years have elapsed after the Taiwan 228 Massacres, the demand for justice is still a very difficult task in Taiwan so long as KMT party still holds huge ill-gotten assets at hand and has major influences on the judicial system of Taiwan government.
See how brutal the local Tao-Yuan polices treated the armless civilians in this case! While the KMT party led by Legislator John Chiang (蔣孝嚴, a grandchild of CKS) is trying very hard to protect the surrounding walls of the CKS Memorial Hall in Taipei, do they care at all how the families of those victims in Taiwan 228 Massacres feel about the injustice?
Does not Legislator Chiang know that many many innocent martyrs (of Taiwan 228 massacres and white-terror era) killed by CKS' regime are still missing today and even without a memorial tomb to remember them? In contrast, there are more than 40,000 statues erected in public still demanding Formosa people to remember CKS! Does Legislator John Chiang have a heart and do anything to remember those innocents killed by CKS' forces, while he is asking people in Taiwan today not to forget his grandfather? He must not forget that his mother's run-down tomb in Kweilin of China was first reconditioned and maintained by some generous Taiwanese merchant before Chiang could even visit mainland. |

On March 12, 2007, in the Legislature Yuan of Taiwan, KMT Party Legislator John Chiang (蔣孝嚴) thundered "Do you (General Lee Jye, the Minister of National Defense of Taiwan) miss (my grandfather) old Chiang Kai-shek?" This questioning certainly had nothing to do with Taiwan national defense. Chiang may as well question "Do you miss all my ancestors?"
Actually, General Lee rebutted "No one even care to miss Dr. Sun Yat-Sen (the founder of ROC) today!" While Legislator John Chiang hesitated, Lee continued "Do you (John Chiang) know what day is today?" Chiang still hesitated. Lee said "Today is Dr. Sun's birthday!" Legislator Chiang still did not get it and became confused. Then, Lee said "Oops! NO! Today is his (82th) death anniversary." Chiang was silenced at last.
KMT party actually expelled Defense Minister Lee from that party earlier, saying that he had damaged the party's name and disrespected former KMT leader Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek by agreeing to remove Chiang's name and statues from all military grounds on Taiwan.
It is estimated that there exist more than 45000 Chiang Kai-Shek's statues on Formosa island - more than one statue per square kilometer. |

The very end of the changing of the guard ceremony at the monument. The best bits are missing...because I missed them, too. My memory card filled up at this moment. What you missed is the handler coming over to adjust the gun's position and the soldiers lapels and straps - all so that the soldier doesn't have to move. I just put this here to show the size of the building. |

This video summarizes the historical moment of renaming the CKS (Chiang Kai-Shek) Memorial Hall in Taiwan to become the Taiwan Democracy Memorial Hall. Actually, it takes more than 60 years of Taiwan people's efforts to accomplish this renaming process!
To date, Taiwan democratization is still in progress, but it has been a very long and difficult journey for Taiwan people.
After General Douglas MacArthur, the Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in the Southwest Pacific Area, had directed the senior Japanese commanders and all ground, sea, air and auxiliary forces within Taiwan (Formosa) to surrender to the Republic of China military forces (led by Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek from mainland China) in 1945, Taiwan residents have since lost many of their basic human rights including freedom of speech and political participation, for over 40 years.
The journey of Taiwan democratization will remain difficult in the coming years, for the KMT Party in exile has never let go of its tight grip on the ROC Regime and the public media in Taiwan.
It is ironic that for many years, the US Government has been asking Taiwan people to procure (from US) their defensive weapons (to protect Taiwan as well as the US interest on the Pacific forefronts), while the democratic US Government continues not only disapproving the application of UN membership submitted by the Taiwan ROC Government (on behalf of her 23M residents) but also disagreeing with the efforts to be made by the people of Taiwan to hold a referendum for their UN membership application in the coming months.
Indeed, General MacArthur has left a very serious unfinished business in Asia after WWII! Now facing a growing China, even the US Government does not wish to openly discuss the Taiwan Question on unambiguous terms!
The audio background is remixed with a Taipei Zoo Theme Song* (快樂天堂, A Happy Heavenly Place):
http://tw.youtube.com/watch?v=J5DPCVPI664
*This seemingly happy song was mixed here in the background to serve as a reminder that no matter how much space or foods are provided with in the Taipei Zoo or how we may make believe that the place is more civilized or heavenly like, all living creatures there in capativity will never feel truly happy and sing like they used to be in their own free wild world.
