CHAN:
Australian actress Cate Blanchett walked the red carpet for the Australian premier of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull on Wednesday evening.
The movie had its premier in the Cannes film festival, and received mixed reactions from notoriously picky critics.
[Cate Blanchett, Actress]:
"I hadn't seen it before I saw it in Cannes the other night, which is nerve breaking because they can be a very cruel audience and then they all stood up and cheered and was really like Harrison was the second coming because looking up the Croisette it was just a sea of fans."
Blanchett, with severe fringe, dark hair and over-the-top Russian accent, plays evil Soviet agent Irina Spalko who races Jones to the secret of the crystal skull.
[Cate Blanchett, Actress]:
"You don't get the chance to play a villain as a woman on screen very often, an out and out baddy and it is a villain with a wink, it is a bit of 'campery' going on, it is a story book world so I really relished it."
The film, conceived by George Lucas, is a familiar recipe of thrilling chases, spectacular stunts, mystical symbols, ancient civilizations and jokes about Jones's fear of snakes. But it also ventures into the realms of extra terrestrials and parallel worlds, and tackles issues including McCarthyism in the United States in the 1950s, the destructive power of nuclear weapons and even the disappearance of forests in the Amazon.
The first three Indiana Jones movies made over $1 billion at the global box office in the 1980s dollar terms, and DVD sales have been huge since. |

On Elizabeth's succession, Dudley was appointed Master of the Horse. Rumours about their relationship were rife. In 1560, Dudley's wife died. She was found near the base of a flight of stairs and the assumption was that she had fallen down them.
Some widely believed that he had arranged her murder in order to free himself to marry the Queen. Some said that a secret marriage had taken place. Ironically, Amy's death would put an end to any such ambitions Dudley may have had. Elizabeth, mindful of public opinion and also doubtful about the desirability of marriage at all, never gave cause to believe that she seriously considered making her favorite her husband. Historians today think that if Amy were murdered, the deed would have been carried out either by someone who believed it would win him or her royal favour or, even more likely, by someone who understood very well that the ensuing suspicions would prevent the Queen from marrying Dudley. It seems implausible that Elizabeth could have been foolish enough to involve herself in such a crime, even if Dudley were. It has also been suggested that Amy was terminally ill with breast cancer, which would have made her death by murder less likely than suicide or a fatal accident. It has been suggested that metastatic breast cancer can weaken the bones of the neck, causing the sort of collapse at the top of the stairs, and the subsequent fall, that occurred in this case.
In 1563, Elizabeth suggested Dudley as a second husband for the widowed Mary, Queen of Scots, whom she hoped to neutralise by marriage to a Protestant. The State Papers record that she hinted this was to be a reward for Dudley, "whom, if it might lie in our power, we would make owner or heir of our own kingdom," for his loyal service. Mary, insulted by the idea of accepting Elizabeth's mere Master of the Horse and rumoured "lover" rejected him. The following year, Elizabeth bestowed on him the earldom of Leicester. He was her official protector through life. |

Hi, I'm Rebecca Field with today's UPI entertainment update on this Monday, April 14,2008.
Cate Blanchett has her hands full with a family of boys. An Australian magazine says the actress and her husband, director Andrew Upton, welcomed their third son on Sunday. His name is reportedly Ignatius Martin. The new addition joins two brothers...5 year old Dashiell John and 3 year old Roman Robert.
Britney Spears is unharmed following a minor traffic accident over the weekend. Police reports show she had a fender bender on an LA highway Saturday night. The pop star apparently failed to brake in time and rear-ended the car in front of her, which as a result, hit the car in front of them. Luckily, no one was injured and the car was not damaged.
The teen horror film "Prom Night" slashed its way to the top of U.S. box offices over the weekend. The movie, starring Brittany Snow and Scott Porter was number one at the theaters over the weekend...taking more than 22 million dollars in ticket sales. The second spot went to "Street Kings," starring Forest Whitaker and Keanu Reeves. And in third is "21" with Kevin Spacey. That's all according to box office mojo.
A Texas Beauty queen now has the title of Miss USA. 26 year old Crystle Stewart beat out 50 other contestants in Las Vegas on Friday. Stewart is an entrepreneur who reportedly wants to devote her life to international philanthropy. The new Miss USA will head to Vietnam in July to compete in the Miss Universe pageant.
Ivana Trump is taking a chance on marriage for the fourth time. People magazine says Trump made it official over the weekend with Italian model Rossano Rubicondi. The pair, who've been dating for 6 years now, said "I do" in Palm beach on Saturday in front of 500 friends and family members. The ceremony was reportedly held at the estate f her ex Donald Trump. He even apparently attended the wedding.
That's all for now. Tune in tomorrow for another UPI update. Thanks for watching. |

Cate Blanchett Crowned Modern Master at SBIFF Interviews
CATE BLANCHETT CROWNED AS SBIFF 2008 MODERN MASTER
SANTA BARBARA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL TO CROWN CATE BLANCHETT AS MODERN MASTER
SANTA BARBARA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL TO CROWN CATE BLANCHETT AS MODERN MASTER
* * *
23rd ANNUAL FILM FEST SET TO RUN JANUARY 24-FEBURARY 3
Santa Barbara, CA -- Academy Award winning actress Cate Blanchett has been selected to receive the 2008 Santa Barbara International Film Festival's Modern Master Award on Saturday, January 26, 2008, it was announced by SBIFF Executive Director Roger Durling.
Blanchett is one of the most gifted performers working today. She possesses an innate intelligence and ability to adapt completely to her characters, making her one of Hollywood's most respected and revered talents. She developed her talent at a young age, working extensively in theater in her native Australia. She achieved international acclaim in 1998 with her stunning performance as a young Elizabeth I in Shekhar Kapur's "Elizabeth," which earned her a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress, a BAFTA Award for Lead Actress, a Screen Actors Guild Awards nomination and an Oscar nomination. Blanchett returns this year in Kapur's sequel "Elizabeth: The Golden Age," that focuses on the late 16th Century when Queen Elizabeth is faced with political and personal conflict: the threat from Spain to invade her country and the reality that she may never find true love, remaining the Virgin Queen forever.
She has had the opportunity to portray a wide range of characters in films by some of the most esteemed directors, such as Mike Newell's "Pushing Tin," Anthony Minghella's "The Talented Mr. Ripley," Barry Levinson's "Bandits," Lasse Hallström's "The Shipping News," Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, Joel Schumacher's "Veronica Guerin," Martin Scorsese's "The Aviator" (for which Blanchett won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Katharine Hepburn), Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's "Babel," and others. Blanchett will also be seen this year in Todd Haynes' "I'm Not There," in which she joins six actors who each portray a different aspect of Bob Dylan's life and work.
"Cate Blanchett is the most consummate actor," commented Durling, "and portraying Queen Elizabeth and Bob Dylan in the same year - and so indelibly - is pure alchemy. We're so eager to honor her in the upcoming festival."
The Modern Master Award is the highest honor presented by SBIFF. Established in 1995, it was created to honor an individual who has enriched our culture through his/her accomplishments in the motion picture industry. Past Modern Masters recipients include Michael Douglas, Peter Jackson, Jodie Foster, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Sean Penn, Jeff Bridges, Diane Keaton, George Clooney, and Will Smith. Blanchett's outstanding contributions to the art of filmmaking have put her on par with these past Modern Masters and SBIFF is proud to name her its 2008 Modern Master.
The festivities will take place at the historic Arlington Theatre with a multimedia presentation produced by Paul Fagen of P. Fagen Productions. Tickets for the Modern Master Award will go on sale Friday, October 5 and can be purchased through www.sbfilmfestival.org or through the Lobero Box Office, 805.963.0761 and the Arlington Theater Box office, 805.963.4408. Festival Platinum and Cinema Passes are currently on sale exclusively at the Lobero Box Office. Box Office fees will apply for all Film Festival Passes, Mini-Paks, and event tickets.
The Santa Barbara International Film Festival, set to run January 24 through February 3, 2008, is a non-profit organization dedicated to enriching local culture and raising consciousness of film as an art form. SBIFF presents quality American and world independent films, Latin American and Asian sidebars as well as documentary cinema within the beautiful setting of Santa Barbara, a premier tourist destination. SBIFF is also committed to education through its Student Filmmaking and Screenwriting Competitions, Field Trip to the Movies, and educational seminars. With a projected audience of over 60,000 viewing more than 200 films over its eleven-day run, SBIFF attracts an affluent local and national consumer base, while maintaining strong ties with the entertainment industry in nearby Los Angeles.
