The Boeing CH-47 Chinook is a versatile, twin-engine, tandem rotor heavy-lift helicopter. Its top speed of 170 knots (196 mph, 315 km/h) was faster than utility and attack helicopters of the 1960s and even many of today. Its primary roles include troop movement, artillery emplacement and battlefield resupply. There is a wide loading ramp at the rear of the fuselage and three external-cargo hooks.
Chinooks have been sold to 16 nations; the largest users are the U.S. Army and the Royal Air Force (see Boeing Chinook (UK variants)). The H-47 is now produced by Boeing Integrated Defense Systems.

The contra-rotating rotors eliminate the need for an anti-torque vertical rotor, allowing all power to be used for lift and thrust. Its primary roles include troop movement, artillery emplacement and battlefield resupply. There is a wide loading ramp at the rear of the fuselage and three external-cargo hooks. It has replaced the CH-54 Tarhe as a lifter.'

The real action happens at 3:30. US Army Chinook Helicopter takes off from where Spruance Hall used to stand (building destroyed by Tornado Dec 25, 2006) at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. It was so loud it over-powered the mic on pda phone. So windy that about 50% of the people standing near by fell over when it got about 30 feet off the ground. |

A lot of people wonder how the twin-rotor Chinook gets its directional control without an anti-torque rotor...

This video shows you the entire main rotor masts pivot according to pilot steering inputs. The agile Chinook also needs to be configured into ACH-47 gunships to clear landing zones for light infantry troop and light tank carrying CH-47s as was done in Vietnam with the Guns-A-Go-Go Chinooks with great success.
