C-130 Hercules mishap. Terrible disaster.
Plane Crash
I thought i should add some info, mind this is from a comment and may not be entirely accurate.
More info:
"1) The pilot was descending at a rate of 2,200ft/min from an altitude of 1,100ft.
2) The pilot had tried a similiar stunt 2 days prior during a practice run, and was lucky enough to pull out. When confronted by his crew for reckless flying he only laughed at them, subsequently the navigator went to the Commander and DEMANDED to be removed from that plane (lucky for him). Though the commander did switch nav's he did however applaud the pilot for such fine flying, instead of grounding his butt."
"It was Sicily, At Ft. Bragg in 1987 at the CAPEX. Capabilities exercise. I was the wrecker operator on duty that day with the 782 MT BN 82nd Abn. The CAPEX continued on down at the firing range after the explosion. There was also a heavy drop (Gamma goat) that was dropped in a farm about 15 miles away from the intended dropsite. LAPES was a good system back in the sheriden days. - fj40jeep (6 months ago)

This video documents the use of the Fulton Recovery System by C-130 Hercules aircraft at Edwards AFB in 1966 and at Phang Rang AB in 1968.
The Fulton surface-to-air recovery system is a system used by the United States Air Force and United States Navy for retrieving persons on the ground from a C-130 Hercules aircraft. It involves using an overall-type harness and a self-inflating balloon which carries an attached lift line. An HC-130H engages the line with its V-shaped yoke and the individual is reeled on board. Red flags on the lift line guide the pilot during daylight recoveries; lights on the lift line are used for night recoveries. Recovery kits were designed for one and two-man recoveries. |

Blue Angels C-130 Hercules - Fat Albert JATO Take-off.
Fat Albert The squadron's Transport C-130 Hercules aircraft; affectionately known as Fat Albert, is the only Marine Corps aircraft permanently assigned to support a Navy squadron. It is flown by an all-Marine Corps crew of three pilots and five enlisted personnel. Fat Albert flies more than 140,000 miles during the course of a show season.
The C-130 carries 25,000 pounds of cargo, 45,000 pounds of fuel, and transports the squadron's support and maintenance crew to each show site.
Fat Albert cruises at 320 knots (approximately 350 miles per hour) at 27,000 feet. Four Allison turboprop-engines producing more than 16,000-shaft horsepower provide the C-130 with the power to land and depart on runways as short as 2,500 feet.
At select show sites, Fat Albert demonstrates its Jet-Assisted Take-Off (JATO) capability. Eight solid-fuel rockets are attached to the sides of the aircraft, four on each side. The rockets allow Fat Albert to take off within 1,500 feet, climb at a 45-degree angle, and attain an altitude of 1,500 feet in seconds. |

RNZAF C130 training flight in the Waiouru training area at the foot of Mt Ruapehu, New Zealand. 2002.
Smokey SAM rockets were fired as the aircraft flew past, the aircraft would then turn towards the rockets and punch off flares. The last shot is of a jettison of the remaining flares. The shots on the ground were taken from the Waiouru Airfield. It took two of us to load the flares and fire the rockets - however the airfield and the launch zone were about 20 k's apart - poor old Nissan Navara was on it's last legs after that day !
The shots of multiple aircraft is just me playing around. There is only one aircraft.

Here is the maiden flight of my recently near-finished GWS Cargotrans (C130 Hercules). I don't think it turned out too bad nor did I crash! I apologise for the shoddy flying and the one "f-bomb" I dropped. Whoops. It was a brilliant afternoon and I just knew I had to give 'er a go before it got packed up to move. My good friend Ken was manning the camera and did a great job considering he shot the whole thing zoomed-in and trying to walk in crusty snow. Thanks Ken! I was basically just trying to get the thing trimmed out and play around with power settings and decent rates. I have essentially taught myself to fly up to this poind just stepping up from Aero Aces, to a Parkzone Minimum Cessna 210, and now to this. She is pretty easy to handle, nothing too unpredictable and very scale-like. I have set it up with flaperon mixing but have yet to really play around with it. One step at a time, right? The battery is a 7.4v 1500mAh Lipo and has plenty of capacity and power for this bird. I can't wait to take her up for her second flight! |
