A guided tour showing the B-29 airplane. The Bockscar, used in Nagasaki, and the Enola Gay, used in Hiroshima were B-29s. Also shows the bombs Little Boy and Fat Man. The B-29 was used in a variety of historic, tragic, unusual, and memorable missions. Video shows the B-29 bomber. This plane carried the atomic bombs that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The B-29 Superfortress was a four-engine propeller-driven strategic bomber used by the US in WWII. The B-29 is one of the largest planes used during WWII; it was designed as a high-altitude daytime bomber, but also used as a low-altitude nighttime incendiary bomber. The actual Boeing B-29 Superfortress, Bockscar, that dropped the bomb on Nagasaki is on display at the Air Force Museum at WPAFB. This Boeing B-29 Superfortress, Bockscar, dropped the second atomic bomb (plutonium bomb), called Fatboy, on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. This B-29 returned to the United States in November 1945, where it was assigned to the 509th at Roswell Army Air Field, New Mexico. In August 1946, it was assigned to the 4105th Base Unit at Davis-Monthan Army Air Field in Arizona. In September 1946, its title was passed to the Air Force Museum (currently the National Museum of the United States Air Force) at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio, and it was moved there until September 26, 1961. Many reports about Roswell say that a B-29 was used to carry crates from Roswell to Fort Worth, TX. At least one of the crates was reported to be approximately twelve feet long, five feet wide, and four feet high. Four armed MPs accompanied this crate. It would have fit into this plane.

This was my dad's last flight as a check pilot. He was fortunate enough to fly the Commemorative Air Forces B-29 called "FiFi." It was (and still is) the last flying B-29 in the world. Since he never got a proper sendoff from the airline flying he did for so long, we thought it would be fun to celebrate his last B-29 flight. This was my first editing attempt using Apple's iMovie. I rode in the back seat of a T-6 with the canopy removed and my brother was in the fire truck. It was quite a thrill. The inside B-29 shots are from a flight I took in June of 1997. Note the Boeing 307 parked on the ramp as the B-29 taxis in. That was shot two weeks before that same Boeing 307 took a swim in Lake Washington. The 307 is on display now at the Smithsonian and the B-29 flies from Midland, TX. Take a look at their site: http://www.cafb29b24.org/ If you get a chance to see this airplane fly, don't miss it. Music: The first song is "String of Pearls" and the second song is "In the Mood." Both are by Glenn Miller.

Home made B-29 and X-1
Time :

This is a home made flying model of a B-29 Bomber and the X-1. On October 14, 1947, the Bell X-1 became the first airplane to fly faster than the speed of sound. Piloted by U.S. Air Force Capt. Charles E. "Chuck" Yeager, the X-1 reached a speed of 1,127 kilometers (700 miles) per hour, Mach 1.06, at an altitude of 13,000 meters (43,000 feet). Yeager named the airplane "Glamorous Glennis" in tribute to his wife. Air-launched at an altitude of 7,000 meters (23,000 feet) from the bomb bay of a Boeing B-29, the X-1 used its rocket engine to climb to its test altitude. It flew a total of 78 times, and on March 26, 1948, with Yeager at the controls, it attained a speed of 1,540 kilometers (957 miles) per hour, Mach 1.45, at an altitude of 21,900 meters (71,900 feet). This was the highest velocity and altitude reached by a manned airplane up to that time. Transferred from the U.S. Air Force to the National Air and Space Museum.

FOR PROMOTIONAL USE ONLY Produced for Electronic Artists: Theory In Motion Footage Property of: IMAX Films The first aviation force in the world was the Aviation Militaire of the French Army formed in 1910, which eventually became L'Armée de l'Air. (Balloonist army detachments of previous centuries, notably the French and American ones, do not really count.) During World War I France, Germany, Italy and the British Empire all possessed significant aviation forces of bombers and fighters, the latter produced numerous flying aces. The first independent air force in the world, however, is The Finnish Air Force,[dubious -- discuss] founded on 6 March 1918. [1] The Royal Air Force (United Kingdom) came into existence on April 1, 1918. After the war, Germany had been banned by the Versailles Treaty from having an air force, but the Luftwaffe was brought into existence in 1935. Italy's Regia Aeronautica became an independent force back in 1923, while France's L'Armée de l'Air gained independence only in the mid-1930s. The Soviet Air Force had been more or less autonomous since 1924, while the United States Army Air Corps gained semi-independent status only with the creation of the United States Army Air Force in 1941, a few months before Pearl Harbor was attacked by Japanese aircraft. The air force's role of strategic bombing against enemy infrastructures was developed during the 1930s by the Japanese in China and by the Germans during the Spanish Civil War. This role for the bomber was perfected during World War II, when "Thousand Bomber Raids" were not uncommon. The need to intercept these bombers, both on day and at night, accelerated fighter aircraft developments. The war ended when United States Army Air Force Boeing B-29 Superfortress bombers dropped two atomic bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan in August 1945. The United States Air Force finally became an independent service in 1947. As the Cold War began, both the USAF and the Soviet Air Force built up their nuclear-capable strategic bomber forces. Several technological advances were widely introduced during this time: the jet engine; the missile; the helicopter; and inflight refueling. Communist China has also developed a large air force (which, contrary to popular belief, is in fact quite independent from the ground force), initially with aid from the Soviet Union, and later on its own. Both the US and the USSR supplied large numbers of aircraft, technical advice and training to their allied nations. During the 1960s, Canada took the unusual step of merging the Royal Canadian Air Force with the army and the navy to form the unified Canadian Forces, with a green uniform for everyone. This proved very unpopular[citation needed], and recently the air force (and the navy) have re-adopted their distinct identities (although structurally they remained a unified force). Perhaps the latest air force to become "independent" is the Irish Air Corps, which changed its uniform from army green to blue in the 1990s.
Roswell & Nagasaki, B-29 debris to Texas crates, aliens Bomb

Video of the B-29 bomber. Video shows that informant stories giving the dimensions of crates shipped from Roswell are compatible with the size it is possible to carry in the B-29. The B-29 is also the plane that carried the atomic bombs that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Bockscar, is the B-29 that carried the Nagasaki bomb. The B-29 was also reported to have carried the Roswell debris. The B-29 that carried the atomic bombs returned to the United States in November 1945, where it was assigned to the 509th at Roswell Army Air Field, New Mexico. Roswell Crates - Many reports about Roswell say that a B-29 was used to carry crates from Roswell to Fort Worth, TX. At least one of the crates was reported to be approximately twelve feet long, five feet wide, and four feet high. Four armed MPs accompanied this crate. One way to check the story is by measuring a B-29. One B-29 fuselage on display (at the WPAFB museum) had been cut open so that people could walk through it. These measurements confirmed that such crates should fit into a B-29, although it would be a very snug fit. Some reports say there were two such crates. This would also be possible. The two bomb bay areas are of the same size, one aft and the other in front of the wings. Some reports say these crates were specially made and unmarked. Possibly these crates were built on the spot to fit into this airplane, which is not normally used for carrying cargo. Reportedly, the plane flew at a very low altitude, which suggests that the crate carried something other than inanimate debris. However, it might have flown at this altitude because of having the MPs on board in the unpressurized area where the crates were stowed. The reports say that each crate had to be checked for size and the crew had to know which crate went on which plane. Several crates were also reportedly loaded onto C-54s. Obviously, such crates should easily fit into this plane. The B-29 Superfortress was a four-engine propeller strategic bomber used by the US in WWII. The B-29 is one of the largest planes used during WWII; it was designed as a high-altitude daytime bomber, but also used as a low-altitude nighttime incendiary bomber. It carried the atomic bombs that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The B-29 that dropped the bomb on Nagasaki is on display at the Air Force Museum at WPAFB. This Boeing B-29 Superfortress, Bockscar, dropped the second atomic bomb (plutonium bomb), called Fatboy, on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. This versatile plane is also the type that reportedly carried the Roswell debris. If a UFO had been found near Roswell, the debris, the B-29 that carried the debris, and all other artifacts would make a momentous display. It would be especially momentous if the same B-29 had been used for both missions. A PORTION OF A TOUR OF THE WRIGHT PATTERSON AFB AIRCRAFT MUSEUM This F-117 Stealth Fighter (Nighthawk) can seen from different angles. Its exhaust is well hidden. Although it uses the "F" designation, it is chiefly a ground-attack plane, which is also used as a bomber. Because the strenght of a radar return is proportional to the edge configuration of an object, the plane has a boxy, aerodynamically unstable appearance. Its stealth technology also includes its surface coating. The GBU-27, a 2200 lb. laser-guided bomb was designed specifically for use by this fighter. It is considered a highly accurate missile compatible with the F-117's advanced targeting system. The GBU-27 was used in Baghdad, Iraq. AVIATION TO SPACE-WRIGHT BROS. SR-71 F-22 STEALTH APOLLO
Time :

From the Wright Brother's airplane to the stealth to the space program, Purdue University is important in aviation. The first Purdue graduate to become an aviator received his flight instruction from Orville Wright himself. Purdue is noted for leading-edge technology. Amelia Earhart, the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic, was a consultant for aeronautics and for women's careers. (Purdue's Earhart Hall.) In the 1960s and 1970s-the years of the "Space Race," Purdue University became almost predominate. Graduates ranged from Neil Armstrong, first person to walk on another world, to Eugene Cernan, who was the last. Virgil "Gus" Grissom became one of NASA's seven original astronauts. (Purdue University's Grissom Hall.) Over a third of all U.S. manned space flights have had at least one Purdue graduate on board. The F-117 Stealth Fighter (Nighthawk) uses the "F" designation, however, it is chiefly a ground-attack plane sometimes used as a bomber. Because the strength of a radar return is proportional to the edge configuration of an object, the plane has a boxy, aerodynamically unstable appearance. Its stealth technology also includes its surface coating. The GBU-27, a 2200 lb. laser-guided bomb, used in Baghdad, Iraq, was designed specifically for use for it. The SR-71, Blackbird, has a top speed of Mach 3.5 -- more than 3 times the speed of sound. Its actual top speed may be classified and some say it has flown at speeds up to Mach 14. It is 107 feet long with a maximum altitude of over 100,000 feet and has stealth capabilities. Some think a replacement, the Aurora, is entering service. The SR-71 may still be the world's fastest airplane. Some may have been brought back into service. The T-38, Talon, is an advanced, twin engine, high-altitude, supersonic jet. The Northrop jet is the only supersonic trainer in the world, used by few countries, and was used with the SR-71. Versions are still in use. The B-2, stealth bomber is made by Northrop Grumman. This multi-role heavy bomber can deploy both nuclear and conventional weapons. Paul Tibbets, who died 07.11.01 in Columbus, Ohio, was the US pilot who initiated the age of nuclear warfare when he dropped the atom bomb "Little Boy'' on Hiroshima in World War II. Also at Wright-Patterson is the ACTUAL Boeing B-29 Superfortress, Bockscar, which dropped the second atomic bomb (plutonium bomb), called Fat boy/Fatboy/Fat Man, on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. The world's first operational jet fighter was the Messerschmitt, Me 262. Its engine, the Junkers Jumo 004 Turbojet, began in 1937. Also shown is the huge B-52D Stratofortress. Many experimental airplanes can be viewed at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. It was used to bombard German targets. Later the chin turret was introduced, such as in the Memphis Belle. An example of the B-1 is displayed at the Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio. A B-24 Liberator, the Strawberry Bitch, is also exhibited there. The Convair B-36J, "Peacemaker," Strategic Intercontinental Bomber, the largest combat airplane. Its wingspan is 230' and length is 162'. It was built to strike Europe from the US. It was the largest production aircraft ever built. It is distinctive because it is the only aircraft capable of attacking a target on another continent and returning to home base without having to refuel. Army Air Forces : "Target Invisible"(ca.1945) 1 of 1

Running Time 00:08:33 Army Air Force explicates bombing raids by B-29's equipped with RADAR over Japan. The B-29 bomber, produced by the Boeing Aircraft Company during the war, was the first long-range heavy bomber employed by the United States. It was primarily used in the war's Pacific Theater, and became notorious as the plane used to drop the world's first atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, Aug. 6 and 9, 1945. The Boeing B-29 was designed in 1940 as an eventual replacement for the B-17 and B-24. The first one built made its maiden flight on Sept. 21, 1942. Developing the Boeing B-29 was a program which rivaled the Manhattan Project in size and expense. Technically a generation ahead of all other heavy bomber types in World War II, the Superfortress was pressurized for high altitudes and featured remotely-controlled gun turrets. Most important, its four supercharged Wright R-3350-23 engines gave it the range to carry large bomb loads across the vast reaches of the Pacific Ocean. As it came into the AAF inventory in mid-1944, the B-29 weighed 140,000 pounds loaded, with an effective range of 3,250 miles. Pavements failed, and at their best, behaved erratically. No airfield pavement had been designed for more than 120,000 pounds gross weight. The Corps of Engineers began experiments anew with pavement overlays at Hamilton Field north of San Francisco. For defensive armament, the B-29 was equipped with non retractable turrets mounting ten .50 caliber machine guns and one 20 millimeter cannon (which was dropped from later models). All turrets were remotely operated by a General Electric central fire control system. The B-29 also had an extensive radio and radar equipment that included a liaison set, radio compass, marker beacon, glide path receiver, localizer receiver, IFF (identification friend or foe) transformer, emergency rescue transmitter, blind bombing radar (on many aircraft), radio countermeasures, and static dischargers. Another special and for a while greatly troublesome feature of the B-29 was the brand new, but fire prone, 18 cylinder Wright R-3350-23 engine. The 4 engines were mounted by 4 bladed Hamilton constant speed, full feathering propellers, 16 feet, 7 inches in diameter. In addition, instead of the traditional single unit, each engine made use of 2 turbo superchargers. As the powerful B-29 "Superfortress" rolled off America's production lines in the midst of World War II, General "Hap" Arnold, then Commanding General of the Army Air Forces, understood the need to bring the B-29's unique strategic bombing capabilities to bear against the Japanese homeland. Thus, in April 1944, he created Twentieth Air Force and gave it the daunting mission of conducting one of the largest--and ultimately most successful--air campaigns in history. Arnold's B-29s first flew in Operation MATTERHORN, which called for India-based Superfortresses to bomb Japan from forward bases in China. However, as allied forces advanced in the South Pacific "Island Hopping" campaign, Twentieth Air Force expanded its B-29 operations to bases in the Marianas Islands. During the last two months of 1944, B-29s began operating against Japan from the islands of Saipan, Guam and Tinian. Flying more than 1,500 miles one way, more than 1,000 bombers and 250 fighters conducted 28,000 combat sorties against Japan in the brief span of 16 months. On 6 August 1945 the crew of the "Enola Gay" dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. The thirteen-hour mission to Hiroshima began at 0245 Tinian time. By the time they rendezvoused with their accompanying B-29s at 0607 over Iwo Jima, the group was three hours from the target area. The "Enola Gay" flew toward Hiroshima at a speed of 285 mph. After six-and-a-half hours of tough over-water navigation, the B-29 was over target within seventeen seconds of the scheduled drop time of 0915. When the 9,000-pound bomb "Little Boy" fell from the "Enola Gay," pilot Paul Tibbets put the aircraft into a 60-degree diving right turn and headed home. Seconds later, Hiroshima lie in ruins. The end of World War II prompted the cancellation of over 5,000 B-29s, still on order in September 1945. However, several B 29s well along in production were completed. For all practical purposes, production did not end before June 1946, the last B-29 being delivered on the 10th. The AAF accepted a grand total of 3,960 B-29s: 3,943 B-29s, 3 XB-29s (including the experimental plane which crashed before delivery), and 14 B-29 prototypes. Actually, B-29s, B-29As, and B-29Bs made up the production total. B-29 B29 Superfortress Super Fortress Bomber Atomic Hiroshima Nagasaki Enloa Gay Bockscar World War II Two Japan AAF

The Fieseler Fi 103, better known as V-1 (German: Vergeltungswaffe 1) was the first guided missile used in war and the forerunner of today's cruise missile. The V-1 was developed at Peenemünde by the German Luftwaffe during the Second World War. Between June 1944 and March 29, 1945, it was fired at targets in southeastern England and Belgium e.g. London and Antwerp. V-1s were launched from "ski" launch sites along the French (Pas-de-Calais) and Dutch coasts until the sites were overrun by Allied forces. The underground V-1 storage depots at Saint-Leu-d'Esserent, Nucourt and Rilly-la-Montagne, as well as the launch sites, were bombed during Operation Crossbow. Japanese Versions Of The V1: In 1943, an Argus pulse jet engine was shipped to Japan by German submarine. The Aeronautical Institute of Tokyo Imperial University and the Kawanishi Aircraft Company conducted a joint study of the feasibility of mounting a similar engine on a piloted plane. The resulting design was based on the Fieseler Fi-103 Reichenberg (Fi 103R, a piloted V-1), and was named Baika ("ume blossom"). Baika never left the design stage but technical drawings and notes suggest that two versions were under consideration: an air-launch version with the engine mounted under the fuselage, and a ground-launch version that could take off without a ramp. Intelligence reports of the new "Baika" weapon are rumored to be the source of the name given to the Yokosuka MXY-7, a rocket-propelled suicide plane better known as the "Baka Bomb." However, as baka means "fool" in Japanese, and the MXY-7 was officially designated the "Ohka," the true origin is unknown.[citation needed] The MXY-7 was usually carried by the G4M2e version of the Mitsubishi G4M "Betty" naval bomber, then the pilot lit the solid-fuel rockets and guided his flying bomb into a ship. During the Boeing B-29 firebomb attacks on Japanese cities, the Baka was deployed against American bombers. Another Japanese Fi 103 version was the Mizuno Shinryu, a proposed rocket-powered kamikaze aircraft design, but it was not built.
