Bobby Darin was born to a poor, working-class Italian-American family in the Bronx, New York. His father disappeared a few months before he was born. It was the height of the Great Depression, and he once remarked that his crib was a cardboard box, later a dresser drawer. As a result, his mother had to accept Home Relief to take care of her infant son. It was not until he was an adult that he learned that the woman he thought to be his sister Nina, 14 years his senior, was in fact his mother, and the woman he thought to be his mother was his grandmother. He never knew the identity of his birth father.
An outstanding student, with a genius-level IQ, Darin graduated from the prestigious Bronx High School of Science and then went on to attend Hunter College on a scholarship. Wanting a career in the New York theater, he dropped out of college to play small nightclubs around the city with a musical combo. In the resort area of the Catskill Mountains, he was both a busboy and an entertainer.
In 1956, his agent negotiated a contract for him with Decca Records, where Bill Haley His Comets had risen to fame. However, this was a time when rock and roll was still in its infancy and the number of capable record producers and arrangers in the field was extremely limited.
A member of the now famous Brill Building gang of once struggling songwriters who later found success, Darin was introduced to then up-and-coming singer Connie Francis. Bobby's manager arranged for Darin to help write several songs for Connie in order to help jump-start her singing career. Initially the two artists couldn't see eye to eye on potential material, but after several weeks Bobby and Connie developed a romantic interest in one another. Purportedly, Connie had a very strict Italian father who would separate the couple whenever possible. When Connie's father learned that Bobby had suggested the two lovers elope after one of Connie's shows, he ran Darin out of the building while waving a gun telling Bobby to never see his daughter again.
Bobby saw Connie only two more times after this happened, once when the two were scheduled to sing together for a television show and again later when Connie was spotlighted on the tv series This Is Your Life. To date, Connie has said that not marrying Bobby was the biggest mistake of her life.
Darin left Decca to sign with Atlantic Records (ATCO), where he wrote and arranged music for himself and others. There, after three mediocre recordings, his career took off in 1958 when he wrote and recorded "Splish Splash". The song became an instant hit, selling more than a million copies.[6] "Splish Splash" was written with radio DJ Murray Murray the K Kaufman, who bet that Darin could not write a song that started out with the words "Splish Splash, I was takin' a bath", as suggested by Murray's mother. On a snow bound night in early 1958, Darin went in the studio alone and recorded a demo of "Splish Splash". They eventually shared writing credits with her. This was followed by more hits recorded in the same successful style. |

Bobby Darin cramped everything into the mere 37 years he lived. He was a multi-talented man who played the drums, piano, harmonica, guitar and what not. He was a successful actor, energetic entertainer, and a superb singer. Of course he is known mostly for his interpretations of "Mack The Knife", "Beyond The Sea", his early hits "Splish-Splash" and "Dream Lover". But among the many songs he wrote, arranged and produced, he also wrote and recorded great folk songs. He did a great version of Tim Hardin's "If I Was A Carpenter", his last real hit. After the assasinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy, who's campaign he promoted, he wrote more politically motivated songs. They wouldn't become hits, but they are still great songs.
"Simple Song of Freedom" is just that and unfortunately has lost none of it's topicality. Seems like politicians haven't learned much since the 1960s. This is taken from a 1970's TV Special "A Night With Bobby Darin" and can be found on the DVD of the same name (Umbrella Entertainment), which also has a nice 43 min. biography. |

Love will abide, take things in stride
Sounds like good advice but there's no one at my side
And time washes clean love's wounds unseen
That's what someone told me but I don't know what it means.
Cause I've done everything I know to try and make you mine
And I think I'm gonna love you for a long long time
Caught in my fears
Blinking back the tears
I can't say you hurt me when you never let me near
And I never drew one response from you
All the while you fell all over girls you never knew
Cause I've done everything I know to try and make you mine
And I think it's gonna hurt me for a long long time
Wait for the day
You'll go away
Knowing that you warned me of the price I'd have to pay
And life's full of flaws
Who knows the cause?
Living in the memory of a love that never was
Cause I've done everything I know to try and change your mind
and I think I'm gonna miss you for a long long time
Cause I've done everything I know to try and make you mine
And I think I'm gonna love you for a long long time. |

This is my favourite version of "Hello Dolly". I don't know why this was released as a single when Louis Armstrong had already reached #1 with this song in the previous year, but it was. Doesn't seem like it had much of a chance being released so soon after the other version was a hit. Charted at #79 on Billboard Hot 100 in 1965. |

Sorry about the over-reverb-like sound. I had microphone problems during this home recording session in which my mic repeatedly kept going out and coming back on during the takes of the session. I finally learned that the only way to keep the mic from going out was to hold the mic very close to my mouth. So, even though I had the bass control almost flat and the reverb fairly low, I got this over-modulation/echoey type sound. Even with this problem, this take was better than any of the takes on 5 previous recording days (which did not have this mic glitch). I hope you like it.
My rendition of Bobby Darins Dream Lover which soared to #2 on the Billboard pop charts in 1959, his last hit before the highly-acclaimed super-hit Mack The Knife (#1 for 9 consecutive weeks), which came out about 4 months later. Darin, a gifted, multi-talented performer, was a vocalist/pianist/guitarist/drummer/songwriter/arranger/actor and the composer of Dream Lover. He was married to actress, Sandra Dee from 1960-67. Darin was known for his great ambition and tireless work ethic, partially fueled by his belief that he was living on borrowed time, after overhearing his doctor tell his mother, after Darins childhood bout with rheumatic fever, that he would be lucky to live to the age of 16. The rheumatic fever had permanently damaged his heart. Darin died in December 1973 at age 37, with ex-wife Dee at his bedside, after open-heart surgery to correct a valve problem. |

On march 1961 Bobby Darin recorded " Come September", the theme from the film he starred in and the B-side "Walk bach to me", an instrumental play in words. The songs were credited to Bobby Darin and his Orchestra with a special mention of "Bobby Darin at the harpschicord"on side 2.
The theme, "Come September" was arranged and conducted by Robert Mersey. Bobby was especially proud of writing the movie theme. |

One of the most beautiful melodies on a pop record. That beautiful orchestra plays it so well and Bobby's understated vocal works very well. This is my favourite Bobby Darin recording along with "I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now". B-side of "Lovin' You". As much as I love "Lovin' You", I would have switched the a and b-sides as this one is beyond compare. Theme song of "Gunfight in Abilene" which Bobby starred in. |
