Close Encounters Of The Third Kind - 31 Anniversary
Time :
1 : 26
Close Encounters of the Third Kind is a 1977 science fiction film directed and written by Steven Spielberg. The film stars Richard Dreyfuss, François Truffaut, Melinda Dillon, Teri Garr, Bob Balaban and Cary Guffey. Close Encounters tells the story of Roy Neary, an Indiana electrical lineman, and his encounter and obsessions with unidentified flying objects. The plot further develops due to the presence of the United States government and their scientific researchers. Close Encounters was a long-cherished project that had been enshrined since Spielberg's childhood. In late-1973, he developed a deal with Columbia Pictures for a science fiction film. Paul Schrader, John Hill, David Giler, Hal Barwood, Matthew Robbins and Jerry Belson contributed with script writing work, alongside Spielberg. In the end Spielberg was given solo writing credit. Filming began in May 1976, where problems occurred such as the film's production budget, tropical cyclones and the shooting schedule. Douglas Trumbull served as the visual effects supervisor, while Carlo Rambaldi designed the aliens. Close Encounters was released with financial and critical success. The film was reissued in 1980 as Close Encounters of the Third Kind: The Special Edition. The film received numerous awards and nominations at the 50th Academy Awards, 32nd British Academy Film Awards, the Saturn Awards and has been widely acclaimed by the American Film Institute. Close Encounters has also led to the development of the unproduced film Night Skies. Plot In the Sonoran Desert, Claude Lacombe (François Truffaut) and David Laughlin (Bob Balaban), along with other government scientific researchers discover a lost squadron of World War II aircraft. The aircraft are still and intact and perfectly operational, but the pilots have disappeared. In Air Traffic Control Indianapolis, Indiana, two flights have a near miss with a UFO. In Muncie, Indiana, three year-old Barry Guiler (Cary Guffey) is led out of his house when his toys start operating automatically, forcing his mother Gillian (Melinda Dillon) to chase after him. During a large-scale power outage, Indiana electrical lineman Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss) experiences a close encounter of the second kind, and is soon caught in a motorized pursuit of four UFOs. He becomes obsessed with UFOs, much to the dismay of his wife, Veronica "Ronnie" Neary (Teri Garr). Roy begins seeing the image and soon begins making scale models of a distinctive butte, a place he has never seen and is unfamiliar with. Gillian also becomes obsessed with the mental picture of a unique-looking mountain. Soon after, Gillian witnesses a UFO landing, in which Barry is abducted by unseen beings. After Roy's increasingly eccentric behavior causes Ronnie to abandon him, taking their three children with her, he sees the feature he has been modeling on a television news show: Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming. Guiler also sees the same news broadcast, and both Roy and Gillian, as well as others with similar experiences, obsessively head toward the site. Elsewhere in the world, the pace of UFO activity is increasing; Lacombe and Laughlin investigate a host of occurrences along with other United Nations experts. Eyewitnesses report the UFOs to make distinctive sounds: a five-tone motif. After Laughlin recognizes a signal from outer space as a set of geographical coordinates pointing to Devils Tower, all parties begin to converge on Wyoming. The United States Army evacuates the area, using false reports that a train wreck has spilled highly dangerous nerve gas, all the while preparing a landing zone for the first human contact with the UFOs and their occupants. While the other humans drawn to the site are unable to reach Devils Tower, Roy and Gillian persist and make it to the site as dozens of UFOs appear. The enormous mother ship lands, returning people who had been abducted over the years, including Barry. With an understanding of peace between the two civilizations, Roy is taken onboard the ship as an ambassador from Earth, and one of the UFO occupants comes out to greet the humans. Lacombe communicates with it by using the hand signs that are used to create the five tones in the human contact. The UFO occupant does the same and smiles before it boards back on the ship, which then lifts off.

Kristen Chenoweth and Stanley Wayne Mathis sing "My New Philosophy" from the revival of "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown." "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" premiered in 1967 with Gary Burghoff ('Radar O'Reilly' in TV's M*A*S*H) as 'Charlie Brown' and Bob Balaban (probably best known as the translator for Francois Truffaut's character, 'Monsiour Lacombe', in "Close Encounters of the Third Kind") was 'Linus'. The song ("My New Philosophy") and the character ('Sally') were written for the revival; they were not in the original production.

2010: The Year We Make Contact Trailer
Time :
2 : 24
This belated sequel to Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) is directed by Peter Hyams. Roy Scheider plays the astronaut/skipper of a U.S.-Soviet space mission, sent to find out what happened to the missing Discovery flight that carried Keir Dullea into the beyond in the original 2001. Scheider's polyglot crew includes Americans John Lithgow and Bob Balaban (the latter a computer whiz, responsible for the notorious HAL 9000) and Russians Helen Mirren, Elya Baskin and Natasha Schneider. The reason for this international mixture is that the world is on the brink of nuclear war, and it is hoped that the space mission will assure east-west solidarity (in this respect, 2010 dates far more than 2001, given the collapse of the Iron Curtain). When the astronauts catch up with Dullea, still in orbit around Jupiter, producer/director/writer Hyams attempts to demystify the enigmatic climax of 2001. Arthur C. Clarke, author of the story upon which 2001 was based, appears in 2010 as a man on a park bench. Incidentally, the voice-over credited to Olga Mallsnerd is actually Candice Bergen.

An edit of the finale of Close Encounters Of The Third Kind (1977) as soundtracked by M83's "Lower Your Eyelids To Die With The Sun". This is a fanvid I've been wanting to do for a while, and I think it works. Directed by Steven Spielberg. Stars Richard Dreyfuss, Melinda Dillon, Francois Truffaut, Bob Balaban, Cary Guffey and Lance Henriksen. "Lower Your Eyelids To Die With The Sun" is from M83's excellent album BEFORE THE DAWN HEALS US. -- You can prepare yourselves to see a single very large light-ship flying over certain well populated areas of your planet. It will fly slowly and will be visible over those areas for long enough for you to get a good eyeful. No more little flashes in the corner of your eye. This time you can stand and stare. You can take photographs and videos. You can call your friends and neighbours out to look. it will be in the sky for a long time and slowly move out over a period of a few days across enough of the world that there will be absolutely zero chance of anyone trying to say this was anything other than what it was. The swamp-gas theorists and the weather-balloon nay-sayers will finally have a very good meal of their hats. Not only will you see the ship but it will put on a display. We will make sure it is pretty to look at with pleasant and entertaining light displays upon its surface. It will also perform acrobatics. A few loops and so forth. Which will be extremely impressive given its size. You see it is a large ship that we have chosen for this sortie. It is several of your miles across. Yikes! I can't even imagine a ship of that size in the sky Yes it was important that we chose a competent ship. You see your earth cabal is in cahoots with others that have space-flight technology. This is the very, very last thing they want. They will do anything at all to stop this happening and if they cannot stop it they will do anything to abort it and if they cannot do that they will do anything to make it appear as if we are attackers - invaders of your planet. So you see we chose a very large and very advanced ship. One of the most advanced in our fleet. This will mean that we can not only repel any efforts of attack but we can actually do so without counter-attacking. You will NOT see our ship take aggressive action no matter what occurs. So any provocation will be obvious for what it is - an attack on us. There will be absolutely no possibility of confusion. But it goes further than that. This particular ship has the capability of foiling attack in some very remarkable ways. We do not expect to be attacked at all. But we prepare for every eventuality. The most important thing to us -the prime objective number one - is that no one is harmed at all. This is what we strive for. There is another reason for us using such a large ship. You see your earth cabal has some ships at its disposal. I shall use your vernacular and call them "flying saucers". These or horrible little tin-can devices but they can be (and sometimes are) confused for our ships when they are seen by your earth-human eyes, unaccustomed as you are to what our technology looks like. We want you to get a good look at our technology so that the possibility of you thinking these flying sardine-cans are ours is forever eliminated. You will know our ships when you see them. Our ships are living light... not tin. They are beautiful and graceful and utterly silent. They will resonate with your hearts when you see them. You will never again be confused about which is which. Love Light!
