Long before Hugh Hefner conceived his rabbit hutch, Billy Gilbert ruled the roost as "The Sheik of Araby". Girls galore are draped across the stage in this fanciful excerpt from the great 1940 Fox musical, "Tin Pan Alley".
Princess Vanessa Ammon opens with an exotic dance, followed by something more prosaic: the two dancing brothers, Fayard Harold Nicholas. Everyone knows that eunuchs in ol' Araby tap danced to brassy swing music. You simply can't get more historically authentic than this!
Dance staged by Seymour Felix; music by Ted Snyder; lyrics by Harry B. Smith and Francis Wheeler. |

Wonderful song from Neil here, dedicated to his boyhood fantasy,Betty Grable.Betty Grable (December 18, 1916 July 2, 1973) was an American dancer, singer, and actress.
Her iconic bathing suit photo made her the number-one pin-up girl of the World War II era. It was later included in the Life magazine project "100 Photos that Changed the World". Grable was particularly noted for having the most beautiful legs in Hollywood and studio publicity widely dispersed photos featuring them. Hosiery specialists of the era often noted the ideal proportions of her legs as: thigh (18.5") calf (12"), and ankle (7.5"). Grable's legs were famously insured by her studio for $1,000,000 with Lloyds of London. |

Little bit from the "after Lucy" series. I joke with my friend that ever since we watched this during lunch once every time I move my living room furniture out of the way to vacuum this tune starts up in my head!
Although it was nice to see Betty and Harry guest and do a number together this whole premise was so silly to me on so many levels! It wasn't that it's a bad number, but 1. Was Desilu too cheap to pop for a rehearsal hall set that the Ricardo's house was cleared out like that? 2. Why didn't they do that in New York? 3. Betty WORKED with legendary Carmen Miranda, she wasn't her understudy! Well, that's enough! Enjoy! :-) |

Intrepid songwriter that he is, John Payne (as "Skeets" Harrigan) can even turn a temporary visit to the jailhouse into inspiration for a song, open as he is to any influence.
Betty Grable (as Lily Blane) may be getting tired of every song coming her way being penned by the same songwriting team, but you don't find her complaining when "Honeysuckle Rose" proves a hit song-and-dance number.
From Fox's "Tin Pan Alley" (1940).
Music by Fats Waller; lyrics by Andy Razaf. |

In "Tin Pan Alley" (1940) John Payne and Jack Oakie play two songwriters trying to hit the big time. The two of them have abundant talent: Oakie's been working on this one melody for some time now, coming up with line after "Mason-Dixon" line about "beautiful Dixie", then reaching farther west (okay, a lot farther west!) to sing about "Haway-ya".
What they really need is an act that can put the song over—and that's where Alice Faye and Betty Grable (as "The Blane Sisters") come in.
By the end of the film Oakie has c-c-c-come up with "K-K-K-Katy", the 1918 classic originally penned by Geoffrey O'Hara. |

Betty Grable was the No.1 Pin-Up Girl during World War 2; the forces favorite everywhere. Her movies were morale boosters wherever they were shown during those difficult years. During the late '60s I was privileged to meet this delightful lady on several occasions and she was always a joy to be with... |

Betty Grable appears with Joe Penner in this scene from RKO's well-reviewed but rarely seen 1939 racetrack comedy, "The Day the Bookies Wept." Penner plays Ernie Ambrose, a Brooklyn cab driver (and pigeon trainer) who has no interest in playing the ponies. Grable portrays his long-suffering girlfriend, Ina Firpo. I'm posting it up because of the mentioning of some of my favorite Hollywood actresses. Try and name the movies that the pictures are from.
The only one I know for a fact is:
Claudette Colbert in Cleopatra
Jean Harlow, Ann Sheridan, Irene Dunne, Claudette Colbert, Rita Hayworth, Betty Grable, and Jane Russell
Funny scene
Also, anyone else hate Youtube's new format? I'll eventually get used to it, but right now it is really annoying me. |
