The Convair B-58 Hustler was the first operational American high-speed jet bomber capable of Mach 2 supersonic flight. The aircraft was developed for the United States Air Force Strategic Air Command during the late 1950s. Despite its sophisticated technology and Mach 2 performance, its operational flexibility was limited by high costs and changing mission requirements leading to a brief career between 1960 and 1969. Maj. Henry John Deutschendorf, flew a 43rd Bomb Wing B-58 Hustler from Carswell AFB, Texas, to six international speed and payload records in a single flight at Edwards AFB, CA. on January 12, 1961. His son, Singer/Composer John Denver (December 31, 1943 -- October 12, 1997) was 18-years old. John's love of his father and aviation was/is reflected in most of his actrivities throughout his life and continues in his music. (National Archives) |

They were limited to whatever stock footage they could get. In fact, at other times in the movie, F-104's are seen as the attacking fighters.
