Remember the documentary series called Wings that the Discovery Channel used to air over a decade ago? It also translated into series named Wings Over the Gulf, Wings of the Red Star, Wings Over the Pacific, and even spawned a weekday edition at 6 pm called Weekday Wings. Remember the Wings Marathon on New Year's Day? Here is a little bit of nostalgia from those days. My best friend's uncle taped all of the episodes from one or two marathons and he (the best friend) gave them to me literally days before he went off to basic training. I didn't edit out most of the commercials you see since, well, they do show their age.
Here is part 1 of 2 of the B-29 Superfortress. |

A guided tour showing the B-29 airplane. The Bockscar, used in Nagasaki, and the Enola Gay, used in Hiroshima were B-29s. Also shows the bombs Little Boy and Fat Man. The B-29 was used in a variety of historic, tragic, unusual, and memorable missions.
Video shows the B-29 bomber. This plane carried the atomic bombs that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The B-29 Superfortress was a four-engine propeller-driven strategic bomber used by the US in WWII. The B-29 is one of the largest planes used during WWII; it was designed as a high-altitude daytime bomber, but also used as a low-altitude nighttime incendiary bomber.
The actual Boeing B-29 Superfortress, Bockscar, that dropped the bomb on Nagasaki is on display at the Air Force Museum at WPAFB. This Boeing B-29 Superfortress, Bockscar, dropped the second atomic bomb (plutonium bomb), called Fatboy, on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945.
This B-29 returned to the United States in November 1945, where it was assigned to the 509th at Roswell Army Air Field, New Mexico. In August 1946, it was assigned to the 4105th Base Unit at Davis-Monthan Army Air Field in Arizona. In September 1946, its title was passed to the Air Force Museum (currently the National Museum of the United States Air Force) at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio, and it was moved there until September 26, 1961.
Many reports about Roswell say that a B-29 was used to carry crates from Roswell to Fort Worth, TX. At least one of the crates was reported to be approximately twelve feet long, five feet wide, and four feet high. Four armed MPs accompanied this crate. It would have fit into this plane. |

From the Wright Brother's airplane to the stealth to the space program, Purdue University is important in aviation. The first Purdue graduate to become an aviator received his flight instruction from Orville Wright himself.
Purdue is noted for leading-edge technology. Amelia Earhart, the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic, was a consultant for aeronautics and for women's careers. (Purdue's Earhart Hall.) In the 1960s and 1970s-the years of the "Space Race," Purdue University became almost predominate. Graduates ranged from Neil Armstrong, first person to walk on another world, to Eugene Cernan, who was the last. Virgil "Gus" Grissom became one of NASA's seven original astronauts. (Purdue University's Grissom Hall.) Over a third of all U.S. manned space flights have had at least one Purdue graduate on board.
The F-117 Stealth Fighter (Nighthawk) uses the "F" designation, however, it is chiefly a ground-attack plane sometimes used as a bomber. Because the strength of a radar return is proportional to the edge configuration of an object, the plane has a boxy, aerodynamically unstable appearance. Its stealth technology also includes its surface coating. The GBU-27, a 2200 lb. laser-guided bomb, used in Baghdad, Iraq, was designed specifically for use for it.
The SR-71, Blackbird, has a top speed of Mach 3.5 -- more than 3 times the speed of sound. Its actual top speed may be classified and some say it has flown at speeds up to Mach 14. It is 107 feet long with a maximum altitude of over 100,000 feet and has stealth capabilities. Some think a replacement, the Aurora, is entering service. The SR-71 may still be the world's fastest airplane. Some may have been brought back into service.
The T-38, Talon, is an advanced, twin engine, high-altitude, supersonic jet. The Northrop jet is the only supersonic trainer in the world, used by few countries, and was used with the SR-71. Versions are still in use.
The B-2, stealth bomber is made by Northrop Grumman. This multi-role heavy bomber can deploy both nuclear and conventional weapons.
Paul Tibbets, who died 07.11.01 in Columbus, Ohio, was the US pilot who initiated the age of nuclear warfare when he dropped the atom bomb "Little Boy'' on Hiroshima in World War II. Also at Wright-Patterson is the ACTUAL Boeing B-29 Superfortress, Bockscar, which dropped the second atomic bomb (plutonium bomb), called Fat boy/Fatboy/Fat Man, on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945.
The world's first operational jet fighter was the Messerschmitt, Me 262. Its engine, the Junkers Jumo 004 Turbojet, began in 1937. Also shown is the huge B-52D Stratofortress.
Many experimental airplanes can be viewed at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. They can be seen flying over the base, on the runways, and in the Air and Space Museum, including the: YF-22, Flying Tiger, AVF-117 Stealth Fighter Nighthawk B-29 Superfortress Nagasaki Japan B-52D Stratofortress Laser Gilded Bomb Baghdad B-29 bomb Nagasaki "fat boy" F 117 Stealth Bomber B-2 Tacit Blue, possible Laser Airplane, X-13 Vertijet, Fa989, AC-130A Hercules, YF-F fighter jet, YF-5A, X-3, Martin X-24B and U-2 |

The huge B-52D Stratofortress was used for later bombing missions.
The GBU-27, a 2200 lb. laser-guided bomb was designed specifically for use for the F-117. It is considered a highly accurate missile compatible with the F-117's advanced targeting system. The GBU-27 was used in Baghdad, Iraq.
The world's first operational jet fighter was the Messerschmitt, Me 262. The development of its engine, the Junkers Jumo 004 Turbojet, began in 1937 and large-scale production began in late 1944. By the time Germany surrendered in May 1945, over 5,000 engines had been made. The engine was first flight tested in 1942.
The B-17 and the Consolidated B-24 were the two standard US heavy bombers until the B-29 Superfortress was introduced. The B-17 was flown by the Army Air Corps throughout WWII. It was used to bombard German targets. Later the chin turret was introduced, such as in the Memphis Belle. An example of the B-1 is displayed at the Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio. A B-24 Liberator, the Strawberry Bitch, is also exhibited there.
The Convair B-36J, "Peacemaker," Strategic Intercontinental Bomber, the largest combat airplane. Its wingspan is 230' and length is 162'. It was built to strike Europe from the US. It was the largest production aircraft ever built. It is distinctive because it is the only aircraft capable of attacking a target on another continent and returning to home base without having to refuel.

This was my dad's last flight as a check pilot. He was fortunate enough to fly the Commemorative Air Forces B-29 called "FiFi." It was (and still is) the last flying B-29 in the world. Since he never got a proper sendoff from the airline flying he did for so long, we thought it would be fun to celebrate his last B-29 flight.
This was my first editing attempt using Apple's iMovie. I rode in the back seat of a T-6 with the canopy removed and my brother was in the fire truck. It was quite a thrill. The inside B-29 shots are from a flight I took in June of 1997. Note the Boeing 307 parked on the ramp as the B-29 taxis in. That was shot two weeks before that same Boeing 307 took a swim in Lake Washington. The 307 is on display now at the Smithsonian and the B-29 flies from Midland, TX. Take a look at their site:

If you get a chance to see this airplane fly, don't miss it.

Video of the B-29 bomber. Video shows that informant stories giving the dimensions of crates shipped from Roswell are compatible with the size it is possible to carry in the B-29.
The B-29 is also the plane that carried the atomic bombs that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Bockscar, is the B-29 that carried the Nagasaki bomb. The B-29 was also reported to have carried the Roswell debris. The B-29 that carried the atomic bombs returned to the United States in November 1945, where it was assigned to the 509th at Roswell Army Air Field, New Mexico.
Roswell Crates - Many reports about Roswell say that a B-29 was used to carry crates from Roswell to Fort Worth, TX. At least one of the crates was reported to be approximately twelve feet long, five feet wide, and four feet high. Four armed MPs accompanied this crate.
One way to check the story is by measuring a B-29. One B-29 fuselage on display (at the WPAFB museum) had been cut open so that people could walk through it. These measurements confirmed that such crates should fit into a B-29, although it would be a very snug fit. Some reports say there were two such crates. This would also be possible. The two bomb bay areas are of the same size, one aft and the other in front of the wings. Some reports say these crates were specially made and unmarked. Possibly these crates were built on the spot to fit into this airplane, which is not normally used for carrying cargo.
Reportedly, the plane flew at a very low altitude, which suggests that the crate carried something other than inanimate debris. However, it might have flown at this altitude because of having the MPs on board in the unpressurized area where the crates were stowed. The reports say that each crate had to be checked for size and the crew had to know which crate went on which plane. Several crates were also reportedly loaded onto C-54s. Obviously, such crates should easily fit into this plane.
The B-29 Superfortress was a four-engine propeller strategic bomber used by the US in WWII. The B-29 is one of the largest planes used during WWII; it was designed as a high-altitude daytime bomber, but also used as a low-altitude nighttime incendiary bomber.
It carried the atomic bombs that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The B-29 that dropped the bomb on Nagasaki is on display at the Air Force Museum at WPAFB. This Boeing B-29 Superfortress, Bockscar, dropped the second atomic bomb (plutonium bomb), called Fatboy, on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945.
This versatile plane is also the type that reportedly carried the Roswell debris. If a UFO had been found near Roswell, the debris, the B-29 that carried the debris, and all other artifacts would make a momentous display.
It would be especially momentous if the same B-29 had been used for both missions.

1) Target Tokyo From Saipan B-29 Base - "Saipan (1,500 miles below Tokio) was seized by the Americans in June of this year. Since that time the Seabees and Aviation Engineers have been industriously re-shaping the face of the coral island, laying out a tremendous airfield. Coral hills are blasted into particles, then 'bull dozed' and trucked to the air field site, where they are rolled and hard packed. Then an asphalt surface is given the gigantic strip. In Washington, Gen. Hap Arnold sends a B-29 Super-Fortress on its way. Next we see it arriving at Saipan. The first of a mighty air fleet whose exploits over Japan are already becoming daily occurances." scenes of Saipan B-29 base built; B-29 bomber lands; loads bomb signed by soldiers, takes off; map shows attack on Japan;

They both display that sincere charm which produces such intense loyalty and devotion in their armies. later, Gen. Eisenhower is greeted by the Belgian cabinet in Brussels ... then he places a wreath at their Unknown Soldier's tomb."

From the Wright Brother's airplane to the stealth, these airplanes show the history of military aviation. This video shows a portion of a tour of the Wright Patterson AFB aircraft museum.
This F-117 Stealth Fighter (Nighthawk) can seen from different angles. Its exhaust is well hidden. Although it uses the "F" designation, it is chiefly a ground-attack plane, which is also used as a bomber. Because the strength of a radar return is proportional to the edge configuration of an object, the plane has a boxy, aerodynamically unstable appearance. Its stealth technology also includes its surface coating.
Also shown is the ACTUAL Boeing B-29 Superfortress, Bockscar, which dropped the second atomic bomb (plutonium bomb), called Fatboy, on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945.

Little Boy was the codename of the atomic bomb which was dropped on Hiroshima, on August 6, 1945 by the 12-man crew of the B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay, piloted by Colonel Paul Tibbets of the United States Army Air Forces. It was the first atomic bomb ever used as a weapon and was dropped three days before the "Fat Man" bomb was used against Nagasaki. This video was complied by Usamah Khalid for Summer School 2007 at Small Heath Sixth Form |

this is my first sserious video. dont be too harsh on it.
Anyway, little boy was the first atomic bomb used in a war. It was dropped to Hiroshimain Japan, by a B-29 superfortress called enola Gey (not sure if i spelled it right).
The atomicbomb was a result from the super secret manhattan project.
The nukes played an importabt part, making japan finally surrender (the other bomb dropped was called fat man. It layeddestruction over Nagasaki) |

advanced japanese warplanes 1945
The Kyūshū J7W1 Shinden (震電, "Magnificent Lightning") fighter was a World War II Japanese propeller driven aircraft that was built in a canard design. The wings were attached to the tail section and stabilizers were on the front. The propeller was also in the rear, in a pusher configuration. It was expected to be a highly maneuverable interceptor, but only two were finished before the end of war. Plans were also drawn up for a jet-powered version (J7W2), but this never left the drawing board.
The J7W was developed for the Imperial Japanese Navy as a specific response to the B-29 Superfortress raids on the Japanese homeland. It was to be operated from land bases. The canard concept was tested first by building a number of gliders with this layout, designated MXY6. |

Army Air Force explicates bombing raids by B-29's equipped with RADAR over Japan.
The B-29 bomber, produced by the Boeing Aircraft Company during the war, was the first long-range heavy bomber employed by the United States. It was primarily used in the war's Pacific Theater, and became notorious as the plane used to drop the world's first atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, Aug. 6 and 9, 1945.
The Boeing B-29 was designed in 1940 as an eventual replacement for the B-17 and B-24. The first one built made its maiden flight on Sept. 21, 1942. Developing the Boeing B-29 was a program which rivaled the Manhattan Project in size and expense. Technically a generation ahead of all other heavy bomber types in World War II, the Superfortress was pressurized for high altitudes and featured remotely-controlled gun turrets. Most important, its four supercharged Wright R-3350-23 engines gave it the range to carry large bomb loads across the vast reaches of the Pacific Ocean.
As it came into the AAF inventory in mid-1944, the B-29 weighed 140,000 pounds loaded, with an effective range of 3,250 miles. Pavements failed, and at their best, behaved erratically. No airfield pavement had been designed for more than 120,000 pounds gross weight. The Corps of Engineers began experiments anew with pavement overlays at Hamilton Field north of San Francisco.
For defensive armament, the B-29 was equipped with non retractable turrets mounting ten .50 caliber machine guns and one 20 millimeter cannon (which was dropped from later models). All turrets were remotely operated by a General Electric central fire control system. The B-29 also had an extensive radio and radar equipment that included a liaison set, radio compass, marker beacon, glide path receiver, localizer receiver, IFF (identification friend or foe) transformer, emergency rescue transmitter, blind bombing radar (on many aircraft), radio countermeasures, and static dischargers.
Another special and for a while greatly troublesome feature of the B-29 was the brand new, but fire prone, 18 cylinder Wright R-3350-23 engine. The 4 engines were mounted by 4 bladed Hamilton constant speed, full feathering propellers, 16 feet, 7 inches in diameter. In addition, instead of the traditional single unit, each engine made use of 2 turbo superchargers.
As the powerful B-29 "Superfortress" rolled off America's production lines in the midst of World War II, General "Hap" Arnold, then Commanding General of the Army Air Forces, understood the need to bring the B-29's unique strategic bombing capabilities to bear against the Japanese homeland. Thus, in April 1944, he created Twentieth Air Force and gave it the daunting mission of conducting one of the largest--and ultimately most successful--air campaigns in history. Arnold's B-29s first flew in Operation MATTERHORN, which called for India-based Superfortresses to bomb Japan from forward bases in China. However, as allied forces advanced in the South Pacific "Island Hopping" campaign, Twentieth Air Force expanded its B-29 operations to bases in the Marianas Islands. During the last two months of 1944, B-29s began operating against Japan from the islands of Saipan, Guam and Tinian. Flying more than 1,500 miles one way, more than 1,000 bombers and 250 fighters conducted 28,000 combat sorties against Japan in the brief span of 16 months.
On 6 August 1945 the crew of the "Enola Gay" dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. The thirteen-hour mission to Hiroshima began at 0245 Tinian time. By the time they rendezvoused with their accompanying B-29s at 0607 over Iwo Jima, the group was three hours from the target area. The "Enola Gay" flew toward Hiroshima at a speed of 285 mph. After six-and-a-half hours of tough over-water navigation, the B-29 was over target within seventeen seconds of the scheduled drop time of 0915. When the 9,000-pound bomb "Little Boy" fell from the "Enola Gay," pilot Paul Tibbets put the aircraft into a 60-degree diving right turn and headed home. Seconds later, Hiroshima lie in ruins.
The end of World War II prompted the cancellation of over 5,000 B-29s, still on order in September 1945. However, several B 29s well along in production were completed. For all practical purposes, production did not end before June 1946, the last B-29 being delivered on the 10th.
The AAF accepted a grand total of 3,960 B-29s: 3,943 B-29s, 3 XB-29s (including the experimental plane which crashed before delivery), and 14 B-29 prototypes. Actually, B-29s, B-29As, and B-29Bs made up the production total.

The United States of America Should Apologize to Japan. An animated
film is presented which is shown in Hiroshima each year to school children. Apart from the moral questions involved, were the atomic bombings militarily necessary? By any rational yardstick, they were not. Japan already had been defeated militarily by June 1945. Almost nothing was left of the once mighty Imperial Navy, and Japan's air force had been all but totally destroyed. Against only token opposition, American war planes ranged at will over the country, and US bombers rained down devastation on her cities, steadily reducing them to rubble. What was left of Japan's factories and workshops struggled fitfully to turn out weapons and other goods from inadequate raw materials. (Oil supplies had not been available since April.) By July about a quarter of all the houses in Japan had been destroyed, and her transportation system was near collapse. Food had become so scarce that most Japanese were subsisting on a sub-starvation diet. On the night of March 9-10, 1945, a wave of 300 American bombers struck Tokyo, killing 100,000 people. Dropping nearly 1,700 tons of bombs, the war planes ravaged much of the capital city, completely burning out 16 square miles and destroying a quarter of a million structures. A million residents were left homeless. On May 23, eleven weeks later, came the greatest air raid of the Pacific War, when 520 giant B-29 "Superfortress" bombers unleashed 4,500 tons of incendiary bombs on the heart of the already battered Japanese capital. Generating gale-force winds, the exploding incendiaries obliterated Tokyo's commercial center and railway yards, and consumed the Ginza entertainment district. Two days later, on May 25, a second strike of 502 "Superfortress" planes roared low over Tokyo, raining down some 4,000 tons of explosives. Together these two B-29 raids destroyed 56 square miles of the Japanese capital. Even before the Hiroshima attack, American air force General Curtis LeMay boasted that American bombers were "driving them [Japanese] back to the stone age." Henry H. ("Hap") Arnold, commanding General of the Army air forces, declared in his 1949 memoirs: "It always appeared to us, atomic bomb or no atomic bomb, the Japanese were already on the verge of collapse." This was confirmed by former Japanese prime minister Fumimaro Konoye, who said: "Fundamentally, the thing that brought about the determination to make peace was the prolonged bombing by the B-29s." On August 6 and 9, 1945, two B-29 Superfortress bombers (the Enola Gay and the Bockscar) dropped two atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing about 130,000 people in total. The planes both took off from Tinian Island. The Hiroshima bomb (Little Boy) was a 15-kiloton gun-type fission device that exploded 100 meters above a bridge. It killed about 80,000 people. The Nagasaki bomb (Fat Man) was a 20-kiloton implosion-type fission device that killed 50,000 people. These two attacks forced the Japanese forces to surrender, thus ending the Second World War between the United States and Japan. The following clip was taken from the award-winning documentary "Trinity and Beyond".

*Just an interesting fact, one of the Enola Gay bomber pilots who dropped the bomb on Hiroshima recently died at age 92. He said that he did NOT regret or was sorry about dropping the bomb on Hiroshima. He said that if he didn't drop the bomb, many more people would be killed. He wanted to be buried secretly in an unmarked grave, for he was afraid many Japanese people would hate him afterwards. |
